I think the White Dwarf really needs more mazes and crosswords.

And connect the dots.

Oh wow! It's a Tyranid!

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Hmm, I'd like, as many have mentioned, more views of hobbyists' armies - even the return of Fuel for the Furnace - well at least the staff section - where we can also see some of the staff members' armies develop - ones that aren't 'Eavy metal standard, ones that have a touch of individualism about them.

Also, as a tournament player, I'd like once in a while for them to properly put a codex through its paces, using tournament players, competitive lists, models chosen for reasons other than 'they're new', 'they're cool' etc. Even decent tactica articles wouldn't be too much to ask for - or certain tactics higlighted within a battle report.

I know some of this will have obvious objections - e.g. non-use of a model in a battle report = decreased sales but hey, I mean, a White Dwarf that has more solid writing, not relying on shiny pictures.

Sorry if that seemed like a rant but I tried to put it under additions rather than afore-mentioned 'point out failures of WD' clause.

I think a lot of our comments revolve around the fact that WD is largely aimed at the entry level gamer these days. Perhaps there could be a separate Veteran's section?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I about swallowed a mouthful of tobacco after reading that.

From the WD I want more mid-production updates. I always love it when somebody posts greenstuff photos from Gamesday events and I would like to see that in the WD first. I also want more battle reports from the participants perspective (as opposed to fluff like writing). I like to read what the guys are thinking. I also would like to see some more giveaways. Maybe a quarterly drawing or some other way to get free product. I know everybody wants this, but would it financially draining to give away a Battalion box every few months?

Maybe some more player spotlights. Background, gaming club, armies, what does he/she aspire to accomplish within the next 6 months or so. This could be a one page thing. It doesn't even have to be about somebody with deity-like gaming abilities. I think that putting players into the magazine will remind us that people outside of GW make up the hobby. Mad props to John Blanche and his ilk, don't get me wrong. Also some more in depth coverage of the GTs and Indy-GTs. Early 2000 WD would have coverage that was awesome. Pictures of players, armies, and the goofy stuff that goes with that.

Profiles of players' armies. I really miss those.

Fluff/short narrative stuff (profiles of planets/regiments/craftworlds/tribes/crusades/missions/cults/chapters/legions .... that sort of thing).

Golden Daemon coverage.

Those would be the things I'd most like to see return. When I first got involved in 40k, the sense of community GW nurtured through media like WD really drew me in.

Unfortunately, GW seems to be retreating from its community-building efforts, on almost every front.

More well written, new fluff.
More new art.
Interesting armies with a well written, amusing write up.
A series about a campaign- battle reports, terrain modelling, write ups- the whole shebang. I'd love to read something like that.
Better battle reports (not just the studio army, and let's have something that doesn't have just the flavour of the month! Also, bring back the old detailed maps.)
More terrain articles that are achievable on what you have around the house, rather than with a fully equiped studio.
Lose standard bearer, get a letters page and publish all sides. It makes for interesting reading.
Random fun articles. Stuff that someone writes because it seems like a good idea.
Oh, and actually, tournament coverage from a punters perspective could be interesting too!

I've been reading threads about WD and thinking about it a lot and I'm coming to the conclusion that what we really want isn't necessarily additional content. It seems that what we really want is restored content.

I can pretty much read around the "Golly Gee Shiny" writing style so that doesn't bother me as much, but it does result in me spending more time [ahem] looking at the pretty pictures for inspiration. The imagery is the current value that I am getting from my WD.

So what would I like to see added, or rather restored?

1) Golden Daemon - Back in the day I lived for the Golden Daemon issues. There was so much good stuff here.
2) Tale of 4 Gamers - Real people; real armies. So happy to see this starting to come back. I really enjoyed the original build to a budget Tale - bacon butties and all.
3) Battle report close ups - The report was a fun read, but what it did was give context to the models on a table glamour shots.
4) Army profiles - GW makes staffers paint up armies anyway - so lets see more of them. As an extra bonus they can take submissions, but starting with the easily obtainable staff armies would be a good start.

Some new(er) stuff that is good:
A) The sprue shots - Not the most exciting thing, but I like seeing the parts of a new kit since it can spark ideas without me having to get the kit first.
B) Coverfolds - Apocalypse has been great for photos that begin to touch on the scale of the 40K universe at war.

I like LunaHounds idea. That would really be kinda cool. Only thing I cold add to it would be the addition of release dates, othe hobby relate dimportant dates, and make it a calendar for the next month since in the past I have heard people make a lot of noise about the timeliness in which they recieve WD.

Chapter Approved. I know we are not suppossed to mention Andy Chambers name since he (gasp!) had the effronty to leave GW for greener pastures, but that was for a long time the only reason to BUY WD!!!

More painting articles. More different types of models, more different techniques.

More modeling.

More batreps. Narrative and (what I call) technical. What they did, why, and what the dice said about it.

- Golden Deamon (love the kick arse paint jobs)
- Chapter Approved (Loved the huge pages of lore and new rulesets ^_^)
- Tale of 4 gamers (That was really cool btw, 4 average guys with a monthly report of their armies)
- better detailed battle reports (seriously, battle reports these days just don't have that bang... I remember the first battle report with the tau fighting nids... was a awesome fight)
- More "How to" guides (seriously, i wanna learn how to build some simple yet very effective terrain)
- crosswords and connect the dots ftw ^_^
- MORE LORE DAMN IT (seriously, from the earlier WD's i read at high school i just loved the stories and the large sections about how different tank variants coming into existance)

Reduced font. Every army getting coverage every 6 months. Bring back Olde Weirde Incunablum and put in some more black library or background stuff like "The Fall of Malvolion" in the 3rd Ed Nid codex issue or the stories when they released 3rd Ed Guard

What I'd like to see, as various earlier posts have said, are good battle reports (using lists at set points value when not playing Apocalypse), Tale of (fill in here) Gamers (the last series helped me get into starting my Guard army for the new codex, as well as add to my plasticrack addiction), the chance to see non-studio armies (how do other staffers paint their forces?), some Specialist Games love.

I think the hobby has so much to offer and that WD would be a better read, and dare I say worth the price, if some of this was included.

I wish that they would add in more about SGs. All it would take is a bit of coverage every month to get people interested. Heck, just include this guy's collection and you can have the whole world hooked on =][=.

Take a page from BoLS and have the WD staff write up a chapter approved serial campaign.

Imagine an entire series of battle reports linked over a year, set in the same campaign world, covering games held by the WD/Promotions/HQ staff. Real games, not thinly veiled promotions. One game a quarter for each system, with the final battle held in the last quarter of the year. Each game played builds off the story from the last battle... Thoughtful, stirring backgrounds, campaign related characters, and other fun stuff abound.

They should do articles (forgive me if they do, I don't normally read it) where they take a unit, and show three ways to paint it in the same colour scheme. One would be a very simple way, for getting lots to table top quality while still looking ok. The next would be sort of intermediate, and the third would be how the 'Eavy metal guys would do it, or similar. But without using Vallejo, of course.

The sink.

I think the WD writers need to study No Quarter and add in articles similar to NQ. In character reports (of whatever, as long as its interesting), additional bits for the RPG line, and battle reports that aren't stupidly one-sided would all be good additions.

Nothing, WD will always loose the ‘lowest common denominator’ battle between useful content for 'veterans' and product placement and is therefore a lost cause.

I'd like to see a separate magazine that contained all the elements that people in this thread have requested to be in WD.

I’d like to see a quarterly or biannual compilation of the best of a GW online magazine that used the opportunity provided by reprinting the material to improve upon it.

For me, the golden age of WD was the early 2000s when you would get a new unit, variant army list or character in every issue.

So...

1-A promise, all 3 core games will get something new every issue. This can be fluff (introduce a new SM chapter, craftworld or Empire city), missions, characters, or variant army list. WD rules will all be labeled 'playtest' so not for tournaments BUT with the hope they will someday make their way into a codex.

2-Bring back the scirmish scale games (Kill Team, Realms of Chaos etc) and support them in WD with new rule additions each issue.
