I think "he" is a "she" or at least an "it".

Might as well say this now and get it over with...

Some of you are acting like total nazis about painting and social life. You have determined that painters have no life outside of painting and that they are sub-human.

Pretty impressive overall thread derail though . When you consider the opening post was about the state of a "pro" painted piece.

Omg you are making me break my vow of sarcasm...

I know. I 100% agree with the "there is more to life than partying" (getting laid I dunno but ok ), you just didnt get the sarcasm in my original post. It isnt that I really think that in a hardcore way, its that I was making fun of how the poster thought it was a black and white issue, that people who have armies painted are lame.

Noted and understood.

To make my first post on topic. Those mini's are horrid.

Imagine if someone with good, solid skills and desire, painted Tyranids with this scheme?

Man, they would look great!

Dumbest thing I've read on Dakka in quite awhile. Good job, NuclearMessiah!

I've found in Ebay auctions that if a person needs to flaunt 'pro painted' or '$250 worth of figs worth a $1000 commission', and then start with an insanely low opening bid - they're simply kidding themselves - or trying to find stupid buyers. Because the laws of nature dictate that a certain percentage of those buyers are, indeed, stupid.

As always, Buyer Beware.

Raah. This arguement drives me up the wall. The defintions of professional:

You missed one.

Performed by persons receiving pay

The guy may not be a skilled or learned professional, but by receiving pay for his work he can freely call himself a professional nonetheless. That's all it takes.

And when you get older, you might understand the concept of "sarcasm", be able to recognize it, and refrain from using a thread to form broad generalizations and gak on everyone who doesn't agree with your take on the hobby.

See, I can do that, too. I can pretend to be an ancient know-it-all and talk down to people and insult them while dispensing my infinite wisdom about the world and minis painting.

*Cue a three paragraph response in which SsevenN wastes his time trying to explain how I misunderstood him and how childish and naive I am and how friendships, adult relationships, and socializing in general are pretty lame things that only jerks do because they aren't cool enough to be good at painting plastic miniatures.*

Painting is a sign of maturity, commitment, skll, and a hand full of other great qualitys.

Which is very clearly referenced by the army that started this whole thread. I like the dust in particular, painting dust is hard and I respect the skill that went into it.

Anyway, all jokes aside, I don't think there's anything wrong with the army in the first post, but it isn't "professional" and the seller is a blatant liar about this army's worth, and is obviously trying to screw people on the shipping even. And SsevenN, I understand what you're trying to say (though you seem to be painting yourself as an introvert and equate "making friends" to being weak-minded/naive/jerkish and insulting everyone who engages in any activity outside model painting), but really the people you're trying to defend don't need to be defended. The comment you're responding to was sarcasm aimed at the only real jerk here who claimed that everyone who doesn't paint their own models is "lame". Who the hell are you to judge? Why is it so hard for you and others like you to simply accept the fact that painting isn't for everyone? Some people care more about having a quality, good-looking army (which is understandable considering how ridiculously, insanely expensive an army is in the first place) than they do about painting it themselves, and so long as they can afford to pay to have it painted what's the fething harm? This is a very expensive hobby and if I don't feel confident enough in my own skills to make my army look as good as it SHOULD, and there exists a service where I can send the army out and have it painted to an acceptable standard FOR me, then why not pay the extra cash to ensure the quality that I'm not personally capable of?

You could say the same thing about fixing up your car. Oh, it's a much better accomplishment if you do it yourself, you'll feel better and you'll get more respect, and it'll even save you money. Either that or you'll make a mistake when changing your brakes out and end up rear-ending someone on the highway because you can't stop, oops! And there's a reason why it costs thousands of dollars to paint a car, because it's more complicated than it looks and if you don't have the tools, experience, and the shop to do it in, it'll come out looking like ass if you attempt it yourself, and you'll be the laughing stock of the town when you drive that thing out on the road. But that doesn't matter, clearly those people don't understand that making friends and having sex isn't important, they aren't one of the esteemed model-painting elite.

Not everyone has the skills necessary to do everything themselves, and if they don't then I don't see any reason to mock or look down on them like you have. It isn't that they're "young and naive" and believe that "getting laid" and "partying" are the most important things in life, some people simply don't hold model painting to the same level of importance as you do, or they want a quality paint job that they're incapable of producing. Maturity has nothing to do with it.

To make my first post on topic. Those mini's are horrid.

Okay, now I am truly appalled. After all that crap about painting your own models, you go off and insult this guy's army, a guy who verly clearly did paint his own models, because they're not pretty enough. So not only do you have to paint them yourself, you have to be a Golden Demon quality painter in order to impress this guy.

Anyone?

I vaguely recall a conversation around here a few years ago about a player who was mostly blind. They could see well enough to play the game, but painting was out of the question. Are they a loser for getting someone else to do it?

I had a commission for an army a while back from a guy who had just had some pretty major surgery on his arm, and couldn't use it for the foreseeable future. Loser for not trying to paint one handed?

Or someone like Stelek, with carpal tunnel problems, and so can't grip a paintbrush?

And quite frankly, choosing to get someone else to paint your armies because you don't have enough time to do so yourself due to work, social and/or family commitments would seem the complete opposite of 'loser' behaviour to me...

Does anyone else think this army looks like it was painted by Dr. Seuss?

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Why yes, of course they're all losers. There's absolutely no excuse whatsoever to not paint your own models. If they're incapable of painting then maybe they've found the wrong hobby.

But yeah, all good examples. I especially like that last comment, being too busy to paint is the exact opposite of "loser" behavior in my book, too.
