The F22 is not VTOL capable either. The F35 joint strike fighter will eventually have a VTOL version though. Not as elegant as the Harrier in my view, but effective apparently.

This thread is silly.
I declare it silly!
Also, you know what I think would make a great Valkyrie, Luna?
If you can get your hands on one of the Star Wars Clone Wars LAART-I models. That'd work.

A I understand it the F22 doesn't use vector thrust nozzles, but rather has dirty great doors in the fuselage leading to a large vertical turbine.

you're thinking of the F-35 JSF

There is an attitude that not having an insanely optimized, one shot, six stage, omnidirectional, inevitable, mousetrap of an assassin list army somehow means that you have foolishly wasted your life building 500 points of pure, 24 karat, hand rolled, fine, cuban fail. That attitude has been shown, under laboratory conditions, to cause cancer of the fun gland.

While an interesting model, it doesn't seem to be very Imperial, more Tau in that, but even then not very Tau either. But more importantly, where will the troops go?
I, too, have been thinking about Valk alternatives, and am thinking about helicopters to role as basic Valks while using GW models as Vendettas.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular." |

Isn't the Valkyrie a troop transport, able to carry, something like 10 stromtrooper? or a small remote control tank?
This model, while very cool, doesn't look like a transport.

I'm not a fan of the model myself, but wouldn't have any issues with someone else fielding it.
As far as the Valk's ability to VTOL, I think the model does a decent job of pulling it off. 4 thrusters just like the Harrier. I'm more than happy not to reglue rotor breakage.

Man, It's the fecken 41st millennium. Look what we have present day.. do you really think that their technology would be the same in the slightest? Our harriers and f-16s, j-35s, f22s, f14s blah blah blah would be super duper ancient out dated by 30000 years!
I know that they stopped designing new vehicles and what not in the 30th millenium of whatever.. but still that's a lot of years to iron out some kinks!
PLUS IT"S SCI-FI REMEMBER.

And yet, the GW models of almost every Imperial vehicle are based on real world vehicles of the last century.

It's a helicopter.
Why would you fly a helicopter in the GRIMDARK 41st millennium when you have huge honking Vendetta with turbo-jets and lasers? Or, for transport purposes, why not take a drop-pod? Way more dramatic.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Why would you arm your troops with pointy sticks when you have plasma weapons?

1) What else do you use when it's dark in the trenches?
2) Bayonets are good close combat weapons in real life; they're much more effective than trying to clobber someone with your rifle.
3) Leman Russ is based off a World War I tank. Helicopters would just be impractical in 40K when you have Valkyries and Thunderhawks.
As to the plasma weapon thing, it's justified by saying that plasma guns are 1) expensive and complicated to produce, and 2) they're dangerous to the user, so why put your entire regiment in danger of suicide?

Trying another tack, then. The 40k background allows for a huge diversity of vehicle types. while the IG is typically armed with the best, most up to date kit there are still other sources to consider, e.g. PDF formations.
A good example is that I have recently been re-reading Double Eagle by Dan Abnett and that is based around Imperial Navy squadrons in thunderbolts being moved in to replace the local machines that are all prop-driven.
In this kind of backdrop, then, why not have helicopter type vehicles to complement the turbofan equivalents.

Because AFAIK, helicopters have never been mentioned in Imperial fluff (even the ancient stuff), only in da Orky fluff. They have Deffkoptas, which are actually jetbikes.

Fair enough. I prefer to think that in an Imperium of a million worlds, that it is conceivable that one will be one at the right level of development (something more than feral and less than hive) that prefers to issue helicopter type vehicles.

yah what?

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal. |

But it has kind of been justified why there are no helicopters besides Ork ones. The Orks only have them because their planes and spaceships are crude and to them helicopters are much more convenient.
As to the model posted, it would make a great subsitute for a fighta-bomma.
