Where can I get dull coat?

Nothing currently, got out of the hobby, maybe getting back in?

Local gaming store? Its sometimes referred to as Matte Varnish. I'm pretty sure Testor's sells it. Kind of expensive for a small can, but an option anyway.

I absolutely LOVE this technique!

I am a horrible painter, and this gives me tabletop results that I am very happy with. I used the technique on my SAG. Only difference I did on this particular model is I dry brushed a copper color over all the boltgun to give it a rusted look. Although, all the rest of my figures are painted exactly how the tutorial describes.

Please don't flame my horrible painting skills, I simply posted this to show people how well it looks on other models.

I'm especially pleased with how well the hose turned out.

Hi guys! I'm sorry I haven't responded to some of the questions, I haven't really checked this thread much, but I'm glad you are all finding some help within the words I've put down!

Sideshow wrote:im loving your models bases! can you give me a basic rundown of what you did, because i never seem to make it that effective! thanks in advance!

My models are simply cork board and sand superglued to the slotta base. Then I paint it with Scorched Brown, drybrush Snakebite Leather, Bubonic Brown, Bleached Bone and finally Skull White. Quite a few steps, but the drybrushing speeds it up, and I really like the final look.

RiTides Nids wrote:What color did you use to pick out the eyes and teeth? Also, did you need multiple colors since this step comes after the wash?

Eyes are simply Red Gore. Teeth are Bleached Bone. I plan to go back and give them more when the army is all done and painted up, but for now, it's enough for the table.

Old Sledgeaxe wrote:Do you know any other colour to use instead of blue for the pants as everyone im my area uses blue, (ultramarines, sa'cea, dire avengers, etc) so i want to be different.

If you look at my Lootaz carrying Deffguns, I used Blood Red instead of the blue, so that the model wouldn't look too blue overall. Just find a nice base color, and wash over.

LunaHound wrote:Wait chrispy i have something i dont udnerstand.how does the dark angel green coating turn into a bright green after devlan mud wash?( did i misread a sentence? )

I think you may have misread a bit, Luna. I used Goblin Green on the skin, so it comes down to a nice darker color. My technique is simply to start bright, and use the washes to bring down the color.

The Bloody Handed God wrote:Where can I get dull coat?

Dullcote is the Testor's brand of matt varnish. I buy mine at hobby stores and big hobby shops like Michael's or AC Moore's. Like Arander said, it's quite pricey, but I think that the special properties of it are worth the money. Like I said, I like to spray light coats every few layers of color. This means that I spray after the skin is done, again after all the base colors, after the final washes, and a couple of light coats after the final details are picked out. This gives all my models a nigh impenetrable finish.

Thanks for reading, guys. I hope I was able to answer your questions, feel free to ask more, I'll subscribe to this thread so that I can be alerted when you ask!

PS: My army is almost completed. I took a break from my Orks for a bit, but once I finish, I'll get full army pictures so you can see how an army done this way looks on the table. Thanks for reading!

I just wanted to say thanks for showing off your technique! I modified the scheme a bit and came up with my own Klan, Da Dezz'urt Ratz:

I'm by no means a bad painter, but this technique got me fast enough to paint an Ork boy from primer to finished in just about half an hour. Thanks again!
