Luke is 19th in Sports in Australia and NZ

"I would have been happy to start over and made this clear.

He was not happy to start over."

Somehow I doubt that this was the case as Luke was just after a game after I had turned him down (had other things that I needed doing)

Luke is not a WAAC gamer and doesnt let a minor quibble get in the way of a good game (Onlainari gives the impression that he knows the game well to the club members; is it that unreasonable to assume that he would know a basic rule as part of it?)

Besides; it was one turn of nightfight; its a friendly, you learn and move on - why walk out on a game that supposed to be fun because you didnt know a rule?

"I packed up because I was not going to have any fun playing it out and he sure didn't look like he was having any fun either."

You wouldnt have any fun because there was nightfight for one turn... And if such a good sport like Luke wasnt looking as he was having fun; why do you think that might be? Where you doing anything else to annoy him or had something gone bad on his side?

Anyways, Im sure Luke will be on shortly to put forward his side of the story.

Ah another case of the old internet he said she said. Olainari has his side that makes it look like Luke was mostly in the wrong and Luke will soon be here to tell us how he would have of course offered to restart the game it Olainari had asked......

Listen, just because you say you have never played a mission before doesn't mean you don't know the rules for it, I used to know the rules for almost 20 3rd ed missions despite only having played a handful. On the flip side maybe Luke should have asked if you know anything about the mission but he didn't.

Sure, you may have killed the Land Raider, then again you may not have. He was in the wrong for not clarifying with you or offering to restart the game. But if you were really whining (your own words) why would he want to restart the game anyway? If I'm playing someone that is whining I want to get it over with.

Saying "What happens?" can mean a lot of different things. He also doesn't have to explain why he doesn't want to pop smoke, it's his tactical decision night fight or not and you took it as him "doing you a favor". You should know that there is little chance in a game, friendly or not, that someone is going to give you the chance to take out something that expensive unless they want you to at which point you shouldn't be shooting at it anyway and going after what they don't want you to kill.

It's not your opponents job to make sure you know the basic rules and I think we *all* assume that someone knows the basics unless we see them doing something wrong.

Let's look at it this way, I assault your Howling Banshees with some guys and go to roll for armor saves. You say "You don't get any armor saves, Banshees have power weapons". Now I get pissed because at the beginning of the game I asked "What are those?" and you only said "Howling Banshees" not "Howling Banshees that come equipped with power weapons, etc." Would you let me backtrack? I don't think so. I didn't ask what they had and you didn't clarify so the fault lies with both of us. The difference is, I get all pissy and stomp off....

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

I'm a little confused as to what problem arose because of the night fighting rules.

What would you have done differently, onlainari, if you had known that the night fighting rules were in place?

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

lol exactly, so, you would have done what? Fired at a closer target? Besides I'm sure he destroyed sooo many more models because you didn't know what night fighting was and also, didn't you ask what those 2 extra cide he rolled fore each unit were??? No offense but if you know what spearhead is or quarters is then you SHOULD know what DOW is. I'm pretty new to the game and I know so if you've been playing for awhile shouldn't you? No offense and I hope none is taken.

When it comes to rules, I always follow the policy of

"If my opponent didn't know, I let him take back moves."
"If I didn't know, I never let myself take back moves."

My reasoning is this is the best way for me to learn as a player. Besides, these things happen in real life and in real games all the time. <shrug> It's part of being a good general in that you overcome your mistakes and adversity and still put up a fight.

I understand not everyone feels my way about it, so if they don't know, even in a tournament, I let them take back moves. It's cost me wins many a time.

While I would have handled it differently, I don't think what he did was necessarily wrong. We don't allow takebacks in our friendly games between friends either, but we all understand that it is part of the game. Against an unknown, I would have allowed people to take it back, but you shouldn't have been upset about it.

As an example, it's kinda like going to a pickup basketball game, then whining that the other team had a player that was too tall. "If I'd known, I'd have brought my own big man! Score doesn't count, I want a do-over after I bring my big man." Come on now, it's part of the game, just deal with it.

Oh i forgot to mention, ironically enough, a good way to remember that first turn of Dawn of War is nightfight is the name of the mission. Dawn is when the sun comes up and night turns into day. That's why the FIRST TURN is nightfight (it's right before dawn after all!) and not the last few turns like it used to be in older edition missions.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

#1. I always look at the rulebook and read the mission. As they say in boxing “You must protect yourself at all times”. If you did not have the rulebook or take a quick look at it, it is your fault.

#2. If I did not know it was night fight on the first turn I would keep on playing (I have to do this a lot because I keep forgetting about night fight in the first turn a lot too). I look at it as both a learning experience, and a challenge.

#3. If I was your opponent I would let you take back your move.

#4. You were playing Tau. Where were your blacksun filters?

I can't believe this thread. No offense OP, I am sure you are a nice guy in real life, but this is just ridiculous.

Instead of saying (paraphrasing) "I have never played Dawn of War before, how do the rules go?"

You should have THOUGHT "Oh, I am not familiar with these rules. I SHOULD READ ABOUT THEM."

It's not your opponents job to hold your hand through the rules of the game. If you are playing with a group of friends trying to learn the game, fine. No problem. But you weren't.

And even then, YOU were unfamiliar with the rules. You should not have even ASKED to restart. You should not have left. You should have done the best you could for tha game and simply LEARNED for next time.

Remember...

Experience is the hardest teacher because she gives the test FIRST and the lesson AFTER.

You should have taken 30 seconds to read the mission before playing.

The only thing it's ever good for is one turn in a mission you'll only play 1/3 of the time. Yeah, it'd be nice to have on a hammerhead for that first turn potshot, but I have a hard enough time squeezing everything I want into my lists as it is without paying points for crap I'll probably never need.

You make it sound as if the blacksun filter is one of those no-brainer "never NOT take it" options when it's really something you only think about when, for whatever reason, you have points leftover.

Anyway, @ the OP: You've played more games of 5th than I have, and I know what DoW is. In fact I think I know it better than some guys at the store did when 5th was still fairly new, since the mission says everything comes on turn 1 as if moving in from reserves and everyone else insisted that nothing came on turn 1 and the rest of the army arrived like reserves, turn 2 4+, etc. Kinda frustrating when you know you're right but you're outnumbered and have to play it wrong anyway...

Intentionally not telling your opponent about night night until there shooting phase = poor sports

Forgetting about night fight until there first shooting phase not= poor sports

Forgetting you didn't/hadn't told you opponent about night until there first shooting phase not= poor sports

Packing up in the middle of a friendly because of one shot being effected by night fight = poor sports

posting this thread = poor sports

so the way I figure it, two poor sports for you and if you are 100% sure that he intentionally didn't tell you one for him.

Actually that's up to two poor sports for luke because he did the same thing as starting this thread.

I walked away because he wasn't going to start again and I don't see why we should have continued a hobby game when neither of us were going to enjoy it. I stopped it getting any worse.

What still gets me is you claim to never have played the DoW mission before this game, yet readily admit to it being your THIRD time playing the mission. You already state that you knew enough to walk some units onto the board turn one, so you somewhat knew the scenario.

Honestly this tread is just a waste and your trying to slander a players rep.

You made this thread to ask other's opinions and we have given it. Yet you still argue and argue , maybe this thread shouldnt have existed if its going to be like this?

The truth is, not knowing the rule was your fault . Just endure it as an apology for not knowing it. Dont need to throw a fit over such trivial matter right?
Now you drag their real name in, and its seriousely getting really personal.

If you truly feel you have some fault in the situation , apologize now while you can , before it just get worse.
It'll show class, character , and integrity ( im sure everything will be forgiven and forgotten i promise you, if you end it properly NOW in your next post in this thread )
Trust me , ( even if you win the argument here which you wont ) it'll end up as really bad experience for your WHOLE club.

Personally, I think you need both your heads banging together, and both need to be told to "grow up"!

It's a game, played for fun, with dice and little dollies. Anyone who decides that winning or losing is more important than being polite or friendly is a complete arse in my book.

I've no idea who you and your friend are, but whatever your ages, you both need to grow up and lighten up. It's only a game for Pete's sake. You and your friend should shake on it, learn from the experience and move on.

What made it so certain that his opponent didnt:

a) assume OP knew some of the rules

b) forgot himself.

Where are all these assumption of he is "screwing over" OP comming from?

It doesnt matter really , misunderstandings always simultaneously happen between 2 sides. Whats important is how to deal with it smartly instead of arguing over it.

@ OP , i still think you should apologize . Last thing you want is letting this thread effect your club, is it worth the "I win im right" ?

It was easy enough for you to have read the rulebook about the mission (and if you don't have the rulebook, why not? )

But the guy was an ass, there's no excuse for poor sportsmanship, and refusing to help you out is just arrogance on his part, despite the fact you should have known the rules yourself.

LunaHound I'm not right and it didn't take many replies in this thread to make me realize I was in the wrong.

I was not a bad sportsman for not knowing the rules. I was only a bad sportsman because after Luke wouldn't restart the game I packed up my army.

Most people are saying I shouldn't have packed up my army and continued to play against someone who has appeared to exploit a rule I didn't know and he didn't tell me about to his advantage.
