I have never heard of anybody hunting deer, boars, elephants with a shotgun. A shotgun with pellets is good for one thing in the great outdoors and that is for killing birds (turkey, pheasents, etc...), unless your English Bob and you're trying to prove your not a John Bull (Unforgiven reference). A .22 is good for killing varments and the odd home-invader.

Respectfully, isn't that the point of 00 (aka double aught buck shot)? 12 gauge has also been shown to be an excellent lion and bear stopper.

Just thinking out loud but they may be thinking of .223 not something like a .22LR. I've seen people use .223 before.

Yeah I'm wrong on the matter; it just flies in the face of how we hunt in this area. Deer hunting in Missouri is generally done with a high-powered rifle (or bow), deer piss, and six-pack of cheap beer.

Gentlemen,

Cease and desist the personal stuff. I was about to give several warnings then noticed a plethora of undesirable posts. In lieu of closing the thread, I have edited.

OT Cheese Elemental but you jumped the gun. He was asking if you have wild sheep. The Western US has thousands of wild sheep in the lower 48 states, including several varieties of mountain/bighorn sheep. they are large and noble critters (I was almost bucked off a gorge by one).

Sorry Frazzled.

I believe Colorado is a primo spot for hunting wild sheep (would Rams be considered sheep or are they rams? I don't know.). I have an uncle who went hunting there back in the eighties. Beautiful lanscape and the pictures of the sheep were awesome. I would imagine mountainous (sp) terrain would make for some interesting hunting trips.

Cheese Elemental wrote:I'm going on a hunting trip in a couple of weeks when the school holidays start. I'm in charge of deciding what my friends and I are going to brutally hunt down, shoot, and eat.

The most obvious answer is deer; there are so many of them in the Tasmanian midlands that they're considered a pest animal, so you don't need a license to hunt them. Rabbits are also an option, but they're mostly brown or grey at this time of year so you don't see many of them. The last option is pheasants. Not too hard to nail, but you need a license. We've got two barrel-break shotguns and two .22 rifles (with scopes) between the five of us, and no pheasant license, so we're probably going for deer.

Now, I've never hunted deer before, only watched it, so can I get some tips on hunting the jumpy bastards? I'm a really bad shot with rifles against moving targets, so I'll be using a shotgun mostly.

Are deer a pest animal in Australia? If so, that is great, because not only can you eat it, but I was going to suggest that if you just wanted to shoot something, go for an invasive or pest species. I don't know a lot about Australia and Tasmania, but I do know that they have animals found no where else on earth that are put at risk by invasive species. Aren't feral dogs and cats a problem there? I wouldn't have any fun at all killing dogs and cats, but if you have invasive feral animals, someone needs to do it.

Are you talking .22 LR or something hotter like a .22 HMR? Either way, not exactly a deer cartridge. In Tennessee, you have to use centerfire ammunition for large game. .223 used to be illegal for deer, but you can take it now. What kind of country are you going to be in? Don't expect real accurate shooting with any shotgun ammunition at long range ( In fairness I've never shot shotgun slugs, but from what I understand even rifled and sabot slugs aren't accurate like rifles). While you can certainly kill a medium size animal with a .22 LR, I wouldn't want to try that personally.

Cheese Elemental wrote:We aren't mounting the heads. Taxidermy is too expensive.

Tell me about it. My last deer I had mounted, and I could have had a Forge World titan for the price. The guy is an artist though...

dietrich wrote:With deer, I always go for a neck shot - it's a bigger target than the head. They won't run far, and may drop on the spot. You may want to take a close-up, second shot to head when you catch up to it. You don't lose much meat with a neck shot. If you go for a side shot (which people generally do if it's moving), it may run for a long time (making it harder to find) and it may ruin a lot of meat (especially if you hit it in the gut and not the side).

I guess I'm not that great of a shot with a rifle, because I don't feel confident that I'm going to break that spine at 200 yards. This last season I took a buck with a .270 winchester ballistic silvertip ( I don't recall my bullet weight, would have to look at it ). When I busted his ass he dropped almost instantly, it was a side shot but well placed. Of course, I've had them run, and been with people who've had to chase them a suprisingly long way doing the same thing. I may have gotten lucky this time around.

While we're at it, has anyone actually hunted with buckshot? Its actually illegal to hunt with where I live. I believe most people who buy it here are law enforcement or looking for a defense round.

Of course, warpcrafter, the problem is that on the plains, there are no long leaves to cover a hole. The only trees for miles around are copses of gums and pines.

To be perfectly honest, I never bothered finding out the specs of my gun. I got to pick one from the gun cabinet to have as my own, and it clearly had the most dakka. It's got a synthetic stock and can be easily disassembled for storage. I'll ask my mother later on. Pics will also be uploaded.

Where you going hunting?

Watch out for pigs. I went rabbiting as a young adult, and we spooked a pig. Still, my cousin and his SLR took care of it (we had .22s and a shotgun loaded for rabbit.) - on the other hand, 7.62x51 makes bunnies explode.

We're going up to the Tasmanian midlands, which are pretty hilly green lands with copses of trees here and there. Really nice place, and lush. Don't worry, I don't think we get wild pigs here. I hear the boars can really carve you up though.

@warpcrafter: We didn't mean to spook the pig - we actually didn't know one was around. If we had been going pigging, we'd have taken BFGs. Rabbits only require .22s or a shottie if close enough.

Pigs (or wombats)require either a .308 (or similar) or deer slugs in the shottie. If it takes any more effort than one shot to drop it, your gun is too small.

Both pigs and rabbits are feral pests and can be cleared up (with the right paperwork) on private property. Still, this was when I was much younger, and I no longer even own a rifle.

I'm with you...I was never taught to try for head or neck shots. Nor do I think it would have been practical most times I've encountered deer. When hunting whitetail, I was taught to aim for the white patch on their chest from most frontal angles. *shrug*

On the rifle front, when I first started hunting I used a lever action Marlin 30-30. Later I used a (heavily) modified Springfield 1903 .30-06 that had been in my family for a long time. WWI action, baby!

Seriously though, I haven't been hunting in years and really don't have any urge to hunt big game anymore. Now, I'd love to get back to rabbit hunting, especially with some good beagles like we had growing up.

Do NOT screw with boars. A boar will kill you really quick if you arn't ready for it. Those tusks will gut you in a second after he knocks you down.

I dont know about you, but I find hunting dangerous game far more exciting then say hunting Bambi. I havent tried it yet (even though ive been invited several times) but my Uncle goes down south somewhere and hunts them with a Spear. He has a very nice Boar head over his fireplace.

I've only ever hunted once, and that was with a fiberglass bow and some crappy arrows that I got from gym class, that they were giving away after they had too many target-shooting accidents. I was really drunk and I still managed to plug myself a rabbit. Forgot the BBQ sauce, but it was still tasty once I finally got a fire started. (That Quest for Fire method is a LOT harder than it looks.)

If you tagged a rabbit while drunk with a fiberglass archery class bow the first time you went out you need to consider practicing for tournament archery.
