It is similar to the facepalm, it describes the action of the head meeting the desk in a rapid fashion.

It has no expiration date at all or any fine print. It has a 5 digit number mechanically stamped in red ink. I think it has someone's initials written on it..
They wouldn't take it at the Battle Bunker, they said to call GW.

The dude on the phone asked if it was handwritten because he had only seen online gift certificates and that's all they accept now. He said they don't take printed gift certificates any more.

I thought that was very unusual, I always thought that gift certificates lasted forever. Of course, nowadays with gift cards and online gift certs, they have an expiration date. If you don't spend them up, a year later, they start hitting them with service fees until they're sucked dry or they're outright expired. Either way it's a way for companies to scam you if you don't pay attention.

It's a curio for me now, since it's so "old".

Headdesk is an "emote" that signifies frustration (primarily). Depending on the context, it could also represent similar feelings and actions such as disbelief, etc. It's generally used when somebody Just. Doesn't. Get. It. Think of it like saying, "He was such a dumbass, I wanted to bang my head on my desk". It's especially bad for me, what with three heads the size of large yatchs and all...

Meh, so you've really lost nothing. Those models look like crap.

Although I wouldn't have thrown them away. You could have used them to decorate your army case or something.

You shouldn't hve thrown them away you could have put them up on Ebay as "RARE OOP GW SKULLZ MINT CONDITON!!!!!!!!11!!" and gotten some kid to buy them for fifty bucks.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

No disrespect intended, but this makes me think you're relatively new to the game.

The models may look like crap, but there are WAY too many people online willing to pay WAY too much for them.

It is, most defiitely, a *headdesk* moment.

Simply a case of PT Barnum's words being never truer.

"A fool and his money are soon parted."

I've seen people pay quite ridiculous sums for absolute crap over the years. What someone is willing to pay for it has no bearing on its actual value.
I've melted down some of my "skulls" pieces over the years, as they were better serving me as ingots that I could re-use for other projects.

I tossed away about 60 of those skull stickers about a year after the promotion passed. I'd do it again, too - even if it was still running.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Of course, that assumes the people you're talking about are fools. I happen to really like the AdMech unit. They're not as detailed as newer models, and the Servitors are pretty lame, but I love the unit as a whole.

Does that make me a fool?

Not only that, but there's the collector's side of the hobby. To some degree, we're ALL collector's as we collect what we need to play the game and usually more. However, there are people that are COLLECTORS of the hobby, that will buy old things even if they're crappy, jus tto have them.

I am one of these types. Have you ever seen a GW WHFB Orc or Minotaur from 1988? God-awful models. The Minotaurs were PUNY, almost Terminator-sized. Didn't stop me from buying several blisters of them that were still unopened (still unopenend, too. ). I bought them because nobody in my FLGSs would have any. That makes me stand out. The point of collecting things is to have items in your collection that most others do not have.

Another example is my Necron army. I have a 2000pt. Necron army from back when GW had a Christmas-time army deal, maybe 2001? Most Necron players these days have only the new style models. When I break out my Necron army at a game store and people see those kick ass Immortals or the Destroyers, they say, "What the hell? Those are Necrons? Man, they are so much cooler than the new ones."

I also happen to be the proud owner of not one, but TWO of the GW Mighty Fortresses from 1988. Yes, TWO of them. They are in mint condition, but the boxes are pretty beat up. This is another of those GW-collecting "mini holy grails". Not the BEST item ever, but still very cool to have. I also have some of the original "Army boxes" for 2nd ed. 40k. Imperial Fists Supremacy Force is one, if anyone remembers that.

So, while the "Skullz" models may not be very good by today's standards, they are still highly desireable for several reasons. For me, just to be able to say, "Yeah, I have those" is reason enough.

I love getting hold of rare minis. That's why I have a lot of the Ltd. Ed minis from army boxes - Possessed Marine, Cadian Standard Bearer, Gideon Lorr, the Lictor from the 'Nid army box, the Marine with the Stormbolter and big helmet, a bunch of others - and hopefully soon that AdMech cadre.

There are two kinds of collectors, I've found.

The first, and best known, is the "completist".
This is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder. They must have at least one of everything in a particular range or subject (regardless of quality), as their collection is not complete without and there is a void in their "soul" without it.

Then you have the more discriminate collectors. They don't need to have EVERYTHING in a set to be sated. They are content with an incomplete set, as to them, they collect merely what they desire of a set and this to them is the "whole". What they regard as the 'defective' parts of a collection devalue the rest of it.

Were I to collect a single artwork from ALL of the "great masters", there would be great gaps in this collection as I don't consider ALL of them to be worth collecting - regardless of how many others value them.

Over the years I have owned several rare, (now)OOP minis. The rarity did not stop me melting them down if I thought that the other project was more needful. If I needed the bronze for something else, would I have melted down Rodin's "the thinker"? (YES, actually I would have.). This makes me an "art vandal", I suppose, but I prefer to think of it as "recycling" or "repurposing".

In a way, I (and people like me) am partially responsible for the insane prices commanded by the remaining pieces. For every model I wantonly 'destroyed', one less was in circulation, raising their shared value (this IS how markets work. Supply v demand. Less supply=more demand=higher prices.)

Yet also, for each of these pieces bought at insane prices, one less is also in circulation, and the prices paid more directly influence the price the remaining ones will sell for.

@Ghidorah: Yes, I too, once owned a Mighty Fortress. I believe mine was partially destroyed and the remains given to a mate (I was an adult at the time, too) who had more need of the thing than I did.

My wife would've loved it. A shame then that this was some several years before we first met, and at least a decade before we got together. I owned one for a time, and this was enough for me.

We are very different collectors, it would seem.

@HBMC: Do I regard people who pay upwards of 200 pounds for a miniature soldier to be fools? Yes, unreservedly. They may not see themselves this way, but sanity is not usually judged by the subject.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

You need not make the defence. It doesnt matter if you like them or not, thats all subjective, assuming you liked nothing there for 50 skulls more you got a mega paint set. I would like the naysayers to try denying the usefulness of that.

There is a third, a monetary ceiling collector. They build their armies to a fixed point and no further. I put a stop to excessive spending on armies by developing what I call a Master List. This is a list which includes more or less eveything at a rounded points cost or size. I develop and redevlop the lists over and over again to get them down to 5k or 4k points and still have pretty much everrything. Yes there is some redesign needed between editions but I can account for that.

My largest fantasy army I have is my High Elves, its bnig but I condensed it down to a 5000 point master list from which I draw all my armies. thus my collection can be used as a single big army if I like, though with many of my aermies i am yet to do so. Even lists i have had for years, most games are not that big. 5000pts is not much really, I cant have some of everything, that involves a bigger list, no I was capped at 50K, no more and all minis in excess of that were excess to be scrapped sold on swapped given away or whatever. I also broke the list down to 4k later to fit the cap for my Brets, but didnt get ride of the extea minis that time.

This system works, I have 2,500pt master lists for all my 40K and this is exceeded only by my Eldar army which consists of two 2,500pt armies beause there are just too many cool toys I must have that cost a lot, also because the ebay lot which fueled my army was so big it crossed that tyhreshold before I bought anything else. Also Apocalypse units are extra but they too are capped though fairly loosely. If I am tempted to break that cap or raise it to 3000ptsd i say mno and move on. Valkyries may be nice but I am not tempted, my quota for Guard is full. If I talk myself into buying one it will be for 'Apocalypse' whether or not I actually use it for such, and it means I wont be buying my Shadowsword. Lion chariorts are way out, nicer models but I have zero justification to buy any more High elves, no matter what else comes out, etc.

Master Lists dont solve the urge to collect a new army, and in some ways can hinder as you know exactly how big your new army must be. However this system does prevent you fromm making your existing armies too big, so long as a Master list isd bigger than a normal game, roughly double give or take is good, then it can have all the toys in sifficinet numbers to account for several builds and not get out of hand. i recommend this to anyone who would otherwise be a completist collector.
