Here's The DAKKA FAQ for Vladsimpaler's opponent:

Use this when you play him next.

Q: Is Vladsimpaler's opponent a peckerhead for using an obscure faq?

A: Yes.

Q: Should Vladsimpaler kick his friend in the nuts for using that FAQ?

A: Yes

you can not buy the storm shields from the space marine codex as wargear, you have to take the squad. also deathwing termies have the storm shields they have to balance their ability to mix and match shooty termies with cc ones. either dont play with your friend or don't let him take space marine codex termies.

The same feeling happened to me playing my Necrons. I've got a horrible record with them due to Phase out. I'm not a good tactitian and I've worked the numbers to try and get the right balance of Necrons/non necrons and it's never worked out. Almost all of these games were played with my friends and I couldn't take it anymore. Loss after loss after loss. Mostly against space marines and I just gave up. But I have a buddy that plays Orks and win or lose he always has a great time as long as his boyz get to do something he thinks is Orky. Since I've started up again with Orks now I find myself with the same additude. Orky is just fluff and has nothing to do with VP's or objectives or anything other than having fun. I'm still a bad tactitian but I am getting better and having a ton more fun. I'm not saying go Orks but I am saying that the hobby is more than just the game. Well painted figures, cool conversions, individual history of the characters, fluff of the universe and trying to remember what the game was like when you first played are all part of it. I still don't win so often but I do win more often than I did with Necrons and I'm not so convinced it's because I'm playing another army. I just think I have a better outlook.

Inbetween the cover saves and arguing over them (I'm sorry, but rocks half a Space Marine's height do not give them saves.),

and this lame FAQ that my friend uses

But does anyone know what could help me, you know, start having fun with this game?

If you're not having fun, stop playing. Pack your minis away, and do something else for a while. Play Guitar Hero. Create a character on Warcraft. Go drinking with friends. Try something else. If you come back, great. Your minis will still be there, waiting.

Rocks might give a reduced cover save (5+) instead of a full cover save (4+) if they actually obscure part of the models.

What FAQ? If he wants Sv3+ Termies, he can play vanilla SM.

First, have you tried scenario gaming (Apoc / CoD / Planetstrike), or smaller-scale gaming (400 / 500 / 750 pts)? Sometimes just breaking the routine is good. Otherwise, take a vacation.

Kinda like golf. You just need to hit that one good shot, and your round is a success...

I'm just not having fun with Warhammer any more. For a while, I tried to mix things up so that I could have fun. You know, make a Praetorian army and whatnot. It was fun.

But, I don't even enjoy painting or building anymore, and I barely even log on anymore (if you cared).

And I think that it's because of the rules. They stress me out, they really do. And that's my problem.

Inbetween the cover saves and arguing over them (I'm sorry, but rocks half a Space Marine's height do not give them saves.), and all of these weird rules,
and this lame FAQ that my friend uses (to his benefit, of course. Yep, deepstriking Deathwing Terminators with 3+ invulnerable saves sounds really fair) and it
doesn't even help me out. I also think that my friend makes it so that he always gets saves.

I mean, I lost a game because of the stupid 3+ invul storm shields. Now I'm not going to lie, I'm not the best loser in the world. Right when he started assaulting my IG with his terminators turn 2 (who happened to get within 12" of my men after my friend used his Ravenwing bikers to put them there), I just said game over and I stopped playing as I knew what would happen.

But does anyone know what could help me, you know, start having fun with this game? I want to have fun, I've spent hundreds of dollars and I want to enjoy it. But it all goes back to the rules, which just suck out all of the fun for me as I don't play the best armies with their hax0r rules.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Suggestions?

Start playing Warmachine/Hordes.

IT IS A FUN GAME NO MATTER WHAT.
Since everything has cool abilities, synnergies and combos unlike 40k.

The sink.

If you want clear rules then I recommend Privateer Press. Almost every rules question we have is answered by the unit card.

I definitely don't recommend fantasy if you don't like rules arguments. I find that fantasy has them even more than 40k.

LotR looks solid, I just wish I could get people around here to play it.

Forever alone

And PP minis are all metal. Why?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

That is soon to change. In the beginning it was a matter of economics. Metal molds are far far cheaper then plastic molds.

I think I should just mention what a lot of people have been saying... NO FAQ is official/legitimate unless it's on GW's website. The Dakka FAQ here is just a compilation of answers from people who have found answers to problems that have arisen. But it's in not necessarily the way Games Workshop interprets their own rules.

I think once your opponent plays properly then you'll probably have more fun.

I had the same experience with people who assume their 4+ cover save is an invulnerable save, or roll their dice individually (with 30 Ork Shootas... *shudder*). The obvious answer is to avoid anyone who breaks the rules or doesn't play by them.

Plus, any talk of Black Templar or Dark Angels getting access to the Space Marine wargear is baloney. They have their own unique rules and gear that sets them apart. They aren't the same army, and shouldn't get access to the same stuff. Sure it's bizarre and doesn't make too much sense, but it's the way Games Workshop made the game, and you have to accept it.
