Both squids and octopusses are mollusks, have arms, a mantle, eyes, beaks, and so on. They're more like each other than they are like other animals (except cuttlefish, ammonites, etc). Insofar as crappy movies that use the same five seconds of 'footage' for half an hour, they might as well be the same.

Maybe an 'absent fathers' day or a 'father who treats you and your mother like gak' day would be more apt.
I feel for you. Honor requires men be Fathers and not sperm donors. It can be hard, and rewards can be non-existent, but happiness is irrelevant to a man. Duty and Family are the only things that matter.
The only things.
Jeebus Frazzled, the more I read your posts, the creepier you get.
As an Englishman, to paraphrase Nietzsche, I rather like happiness (eudaimonia, actually, but English is such a crude language). Any douche who thinks that happiness is irrelevant is downright abusive to his family, since an unhappy father casts a cloud over his household. If your kids don't make you happy, then you shouldn't be there. "Honor"? Please. Stop watching so many tacky movies and pay attention to the real world.
Me, I got up early with the kid, which sounds harsh but getting up at 6am and having someone smile at you is the definition of happiness, then I went to work, and then I got home to make dinner, play with the sprog, get a Star Wars themed Father's Day card, and a nice stiff drink before bed. Life is good.
Speaking of squids vs sharks, octopusses are like squids:
Do not watch this movie, it sucks.
And thats when he was suspended.

I ama firm believer that mothers day and fathers day are manufactured products of industry to make us buy rubbish and cards.
So I refuse to do it.
My relatives know this and accept it as the wild raving of a nutjob, but at least they don't question it anymore.
I expect absolutely nothing from my kids for father's day.

Piece of advice, even if she adamantly disagrees, forgetting Mom on Mother's Day will result in...negative consequences.
As She Who Must Be Obeyed states: "if the mamma's not happy, nobody's going to be happy."

(edit to be clear I'm trying to say that a Father's priority is the well being and happiness of his family. his own personal interest and desires are subordinate to it at all times, indeed irrelevant. You want your own life wait until the kids have grown)
Thanks Scout. The kids did make me a T-shirt. Dogma brought me a nice new cane...Plus I was 1-1-0 in the Alpha Male game this weekend. Lost an impromptu wrestling match in the den, but won the one in the pool against Zantar MASTER OF THE PIT BUAHAHA and even his evil compatriot (seals have no chance vs. fat semi-drunk walrus).
My dad's dad knocked off fatherhood when he was still a little 'un, turned up maybe twenty years later to live in his son's basement... only to be kicked out when my sister and I arrived, as he was still a loud drunk. So my father was never the happiest person... I mean, he could laugh his arse off, but he didn't display emotion easily. He didn't display any emotion at his father's funeral either... He entertained himself with golf and cars, and plenty of hard work. I picked up a lot of the same mannerisms, although you can replace the techincal aspect of mechanics with electronics and computers, and replace golf with warhams ;P.
I don't do the Father's Day thing. I barely do birthdays - people tend to cluster in my general vicinity on that calendar date... am I really missing anything else? I agree with Frazz, for once... happiness is never to be taken for granted, and I for one am well enough to entertain myself for the most part. I'm worth nothing if I do nothing. Good to see some socialist worth in ol' Frazz after all of his Tex-Mex nazi-wackiness. In my job I'm required to drive (fething hard too!), socialise, educate and use computers, and hence I find less enjoyment in those areas when once they were among my favorite things to do. As a contractor I get weekends off if I'm lucky, and no holidays whatsoever. I wouldn't want to be a father on top of that... I'm waiting 'til it's more of a financially sensible option, plus I don't know if I'll ever get four days off work in a row these days (Australia has an obscene number of 'long weekends' making 3 day holidays not uncommon). I can take pride in the fact that I can feed and shelter myself and my partner, and could even manage my parent's basic needs if they required it.
A personal sense of honour is the same as morality to me, though... unnecessary. You're either sick in the head or you're not .

My mother knows I won't go along with it and my wife is not my mother.
I care not if my son chooses to give his mother somthing/do something special but I will not be going out of my way to promote it (but undoubtedly my wife will)

Lugging stuff matters too. Lug, lug, lug.
On a serious note, I read an article a while back that claimed other cultures don't have quite the same view of parenting as many Americans do. Maybe it's our Puritan roots, but many Americans look at parenting/family in terms of complete sacrifice and suffering. But other cultures (I think France was one mentioned) don't see it quite the same way. They sacrifice for their children obviously, but they don't treat parenting like it's some kind of penance for their sins and they seek to live a balanced life.
Not that all Americans view parenting in such a Puritanical way, of course. But it made me think that perhaps we get too obsessive with parenting in this country. Hell, scratch that...I know we get too obsessive with parenting in this country. And it's us damn Gen Xers that are to blame as much as anyone. The term "helicopter parent" didn't exist until we came along. When I hear the stories about college grads bring their moms or dads along to job interviews...ugh.
It makes me wonder if I should someday drop my son off in the woods somewhere armed only with a compass and a knife just to compensate for any accidental coddling I've done and to ensure he doesn't end up like one of those sad, helpless non-individuals.
