Space Marines are totally badass as seen in the new codex background. I mean c'mon, Lysander took out an entire planet of iron warriors even though he had no weapons or armor. What other character is even close to that badass? Abbaddon? He's nothing without his S8 lightning claw. Eldrad? Bitch, please.

Please someone edit the title of this thread. The assault on the English language is driving me mad.

It helps that, what was it, 40% of GW's total sales are SM.

IIRC it came out of the sales reports a while back.

HI all.
As the previous posters have pointed out, GW made Space Marines (TM) thier iconic image.
In RT Days they were a small tacticaly diverse force.(High PV)
And as such were as dificult to win with as any other RT force.

Over the years GW have made them a no-brainer choice for new players.

Compared to WHFB more even handed support (5% to 10% across all army books.)
Space Marines account for 40% of all 40k armies!

What is the point of bringing more races to the 40k universe if they are not going to be supported past the original codex release?

I can see the lunacy going on to the new 40k replacment game , 'Space Marine Crusade'.SM vs SM 1000 different chapters duke it out as the rest of the universe just sit and watch...

I think alot of players like the idea that their one fig can with stand and kill an overwhelming force. Just look at the Tactical squad a full squad of 10 with just bolters can shoot s4 24"; at least 3 dead orkz within 12" its twice that. Honestly I feel its about the numbers for X$ I get more space marine pts versus ork pts. A unit of 10 marines($35) 170pts; 22 orkz w/nob powerklaw 167($44 just for 20). If you want new players to play other armies you will have to encourage it somehow. Seems to me though almost everywhere I game players collect more than one army. New books do help.

Yes but if you were to buy two squads of tactical marines that would cost 70 $(and thyats without the tax)for only 20 men vs. 20 0rks for 44 $.So even though you get more points, you'll get less models to paint. But with orks you get more models for your money. If orks cost 44 $ for 20 models then the tactical squad should be 22$.

What about Guard players? I cant go to any FLGS or GW without running into at least 4 guard players, and this was before the new codex.
The place I frequent we have about 15 fully active players that come each week, out of that 15, 6 of them play guard, 3 play Marines/offshoot codex (including myself), and the rest are other races.

Im guessing its people trying to be original by going with the rank and file portion of the humans, as opposed to the super humans everyone else seems to latch onto.

I think that it is because they are quite easy to play and are quite simple in gaming terms

Hi again.
Also concider that 90% of the background is written from the Imperiums P.O.V.

How many Black Library books are written form a Xenos stand point?

I dont want to include super human human or chaotic human in this.

Space Marines, of all the playable factions in 40k, have the closest appearance to legos. This touches something inside of each Space Marine player. That need to build lego castles/people/etc.

And then execute them.

GW is just opportunising on it's customers inner child of evil.

I'm a Space Marine player. Here is why I play them (though I will expand to Chaos Daemons):
1. Easy to paint.
2. A good army for beginners and good for basic missions in beer & pretzels games.
3. Cool fluff.
And finally,
4. It's a great army to sell to teens who want to start 40k.

I started with them in 2nd edition, but don't think I ever decided upon which actually chapter until 3rd. Crimson Fists they were on the cover, none of my friends played the chapter, and they were not Ultramarines.

Heck in my gaming group, we had a chaos player, and eldar player, two imperial guard players, a nid player, a Khorne chaos marine player, and a blood angels player. I was the only vanilla marine player, which ment I could trade all the stuff off of them from their boxed sets as well as the store's store use box set, cheaply, likely for MTG and L5R cards.

That was back in 96~97. I started a Chaos Marine army in college, I like the armor, I had fun with my slaanesh army, which I cannot use atm.

While I am still adding to my marine army, (just bought some more scouts and plan to pick up a LS storm and an Ironclad), I definately want to play an army without power armor. I actually have enough scouts and Terminators I could do that and still play space marines, and do plan to do that on occasion just for the WTF? reaction.

But why Space Marines, they are fun, easy to acquire, well supported, and able to be painted by, played with, and enjoyed by those at any skill level in the game.

I agree with deadratman they need to come out with starter sets for everw army. The only problem with that is it would be paired up with SM.

What I think gets SM to sell is just how easy it is to get into them. All of the kits are obvious, (I.E. Devastators are obviously anti-vehicular, Assault Squad's jobs are obvious, etc.) Whilst certain army's units either don't have models or are confusing (I.E. Difference between a Necron Destroyer and Heavy Destroyer, Orks being CC and having Lootas, the differences between Eldar Howling Banshees and Striking Scorpions)

Still, I don't plan on playing SM seeing as how I'm smitten with Tau, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Necrons, Orks, Tyranids......Anything Xenos really.....

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Luckily, there is a saving grace for me, I may, possibly, when I collect every other army that's not MEQ, collect Guard.

As staunch a Spess Puppeh as I am, I confess to playing Tau and an unhealthy desire to play Eldar.
