I'm not able to get on their website from work, but I looked at the Wiki. The minis are really nice, but they aren't 15mm, and they aren't plastic.

HG infantry are 15mm - the Dreadnought-class battlesuits are 30+mm. Besides, plastic wasn't be a key criteria.

Epic miniatures is like playing the game with lumpy grains of rice. 15mm may not be the best for modeling, but it's plenty to get the character of the armies as a whole.

6mm has a little more detail than that.

I played a few games of 15mm historicals 20+ years ago, but TBH, anything smaller than 25mm I'd rather just play on a computer.

I don't know, maybe I missed your point? :-)

To be picky, they're 1/144th scale, which works out to something like 10 or 12mm depending on who you talk to. The Pod sells some Gear Krieg stuff which is 15mm alternative history WWII, but the current flagship game is Heavy Gear Blitz, and is generally built around combined arms forces of infantry, armor, and the in-between Gears (light mecha). A 1,000 point game is usually 3-5 squads, although a lot of tanks and infantry can reduce or increase this. It's a fun game, and the forums are pretty active.

The minis are metal or resin for the larger pieces. They're multi-part and for the most part avoid the big problems metals can have... There's no "flat' poses (How many older metal minis were posed with the arms holding objects at the sides because it cast better?) and most newer kits come with tons of parts. The minis are multi-part, which makes conversion easier. If you go to the Pod's online store there's parts pics of most HGB minis in case you're curious as to how they're built.

One caveat is that it plays best with lots of terrain. HGB nerfed ranges as 'realistic' ranges at this scale would give almost every weapon a 'point blank' range of a foot or two.

I like it (enough to make a deal to run their web site for them...) mainly because it's still 'fun' sci-fi (Mecha don't make much sense if you look too deep, although Heavy gears are better than most) but has a more realistic feel than 40k. (Sometimes, I just don't want to deal with people covered in skulls running around with high-tech swords.)

@JohnHwangDD, Because I thought it would seem arrogant to quote myself, and the part I left in was a quote from you, so I went for accuracy of reporting. And I just realized that I spelled your screen name wrong. Damned non-omnipotent spellchecker!

I used to play the GROPOS 15mm game. I played GearKrieg (Dream Pod 9's pulp WWII game)

It'd have to be some stellar armor to take me away from Full Thrust though. At that size i want a fast and dirty system.

Good summary!

Also good point on 1/144th, tho 12mm to the eyes is about the same as "15mm" to the top of the head.

Oh, OK, I'm sorry I got a little wound up there.

The way I've always looked at scale is:

6mm
Large battles, mass combat and moderns / SF requiring long ranges.

25/28mm
Best for uniform detail

15mm
Compromise scale offering reasonable detail with cheaper figures, playable within a smaller area than 25mm or capable of playing larger battles.

2mm
This is where the real action is!

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Someone should make a Sci-Fi version of Crossfire.
