I've lived in Canada for my whole life (well... Except the last year), and I've never, ever, heard anything called "Canadian Bacon". Though I live in Vancouver, which is a colony of California. I imagine Canadian Bacon is a thing you Eastern Canadians invented to isolate us further, and confuse the Americans.

Wait!

Bacon... Like breakfast bacon, strip bacon, I call bacon.

Ham, like the hamhock, and the sliced Schneider® meats, I call ham.

I don't even know what "Canadian bacon" is...

Where from BC are you?

Somewhere in south-central England.

You should get copies made.

Shinagami, you should ask for poutine with chips just to see what you get.

Chips with onion gravy and scallops (slices of battered potato deep fried) are probably in the same neck of the woods.

Putting cheese curds on top is a stroke of genius.

I really dont know , but from personal experience + what i know:

ITS FATTENING so much fat and calories
You'll probably feel full after 6 bites. (unless you are the type that likes tons of fried stuff drowned in gravy and cheese )

Poutine is a side dish. Even Burger King in Sask sells it as a side.

You got angus and sirloin burgers in the UK?

I also live in BC, so I don't know if Ottawa is as multi-cultural as here.

If it is, you should try to get as many foods from foreign countries as you can. (Or think you can stomach down)

1: Ottowa is in Ontario but it borders with Quebec and almost half of the city is in Quebec so there are heaps of french speakers.

2: There are heaps of great museums there. I missed the War museum but wished I had gotten to it. We went to the huge Canadian Museum of Civilization on the other side of the river to the parliament buildings. It was most excellent and there are no right angles on the exterior of the building.

4: Go to Byward Market and go to the Beavertails stall. My wife made us go back twice. They are delicious.

5: Tacobake lives in Ottowa but splits his time between being a phone call centre operator by day and a devil may care ladies man by night...

Its a buisness area , with quebec near by im sure some can speak french.
But english is main language . Bears? i dont think so... Canada is very different then what americans stereotype us on south park. ( w/e floats their boat to make themselves feel better! )

I not knowing what it's like by Ottowa, but I grew up on the border with New Brunswick and saw tons of wildlife. There were always Moose and bear coming out of the woods through our fields. Canada is extremely pretty out in that area.

I live in Ontario, so I'm pretty close to Ottawa. You won't see bears, too warm for them where Ottawa is. The worst you'll see are probably groundhogs. About the french-speakers, there are a good number of bilinguals in Ottawa, so I wouldn't worry about them.

What is the work situation like up in Canada? Are there part time jobs available?

I think it would be fun to visit, but I would need to rent my own place so I could enjoy my stay.

Our economy isnt quite in as bad as a shape as the USA but jobs are starting to get a little scarcer (or atleast where i live; where its IMPOSSIBLE for me to get a part time job in the summer )

Too bad you're not going to be in Ottawa in the Winter because skating the Rideau Canal is an amazing experience!

Beaver Tails are a MUST! Also check out Sparks Street its really nice. If you're staying close to downtown Ottawa a lot of attractions are very close; you can check out the Parliament buildings, and lots of the Museums are a must see.

We all laughed when Dad's American cousin suggested popping to Glasgow for lunch when he was staying in Guildford, but in such big countries I suppose long drives are necessary. How's the scenery in Ontario?

The scenery in Ontario greatly varies. In around the Southern most populated part - known as the "Golden Horseshoe" near Toronto, the scenery is fairly flat and unremarkable. However, I've found the further North you go, the density of excellent scenery increases. I don't know so much about Ottawa, but I suspect that there is probably some brilliant scenery even 1 hour out from the city.

Near where I am currently live in Ontario it looks kind of like this less than 1 hr outside of town. (Not my photo). Unfortunately, I'm living pretty far from where you will be visiting. It is an 8hr drive to Toronto and a 10hr drive to Ottawa, so I don't suggest visiting my neck of the woods.

I also suggest that you try genuine maple syrup while you are here. Also, I have never had moose, but I've heard it is very good. You should try it if you get a chance.

Having lived in Ottawa all my life (except now, I'm in Vancouver) I can tell you that you'll get tired of the trees real fast. A farm here or there, but really just trees everywhere. good places to visit: Parliament hill etc, War and science museums, Have a walk down parts of the canal (don't go through the entire thing, it basically doesn't end, but maybe go to the downtown sections of it, say to praetoria (i've probably spelled that wrong, I didn't go downtown much) bridge. Getting chip wagon fries is a definite must. as is tim hortons doughnuts. The experimental farm is right near where I grew up, and is a relatively interesting place to visit (well, as interesting as farming goes... the beehive [if memory serves] was cool though) Hog's back falls is a stones throw away from the farm by car, and is a nice sight. also, apparently a minor fault line, or so I'm told. Other than that, I dunno what else I can tell you... If for some reason you have a desire to shop, the Rideaux mall is the largest one in Ottawa. Oh, I wouldn't suggest swimming or whatever in the canal... it's kinda polluted, though my father once told me that all the zebra mussels cleaned it out. I'm doubtful of that, but nonetheless its a suggestion, not an absolute statement.

I'd have more suggestions if you were there in winter, but it isn't. Be prepared for very hot weather though, in the summer, it frequently gets above 35 degrees Celsius. Ottawa is pretty much the extremes of Canadian winter; Too bloody cold in the winter, and too bloody hot in the summer. that's why I moved out here, among other reasons... though the rain can get somewhat depressing.

major Ethnicities include quebeccers, indians (the non native canadian types... actually I very rarely met any native canadians in Ottawa), middle-eastern country people (especially lebanon for some reason; a LOT of pizza places are lebanese...) East Asians (as with all places in canada it seems...) and africans. sorry I can't be more specific, but it's incredibly hard to be specific in defining canadian ethnicities; approximately 50% of us consider ourselves canadians first, as well as another nationality (so sayeth a few studies I've read, they were allowed to pick more than one nationality)

Have fun. Oh, If you want to go swimming, good places are the Carleton pool and the Kanata Wave pool. That second one's very fun. I guess that's about it for me.

That picture is cool, it looks fantastic. I'm not too bothered about there being nothing but trees, I live in a pretty treeless area so it'll be a nice change. Thanks for all the info so far everyone!
I do have a couple of other questions; How big a city is Ottawa? Does it compare sizewise to any British towns/cities? Also, is there a special name for Moose meat, like beef or vennison?
Thanks!
