Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

I've found that American "jelly" is more like jello (as mentioned by Hordini), although more spreadable.

Jam is far more liquidy and unlike jelly, will drip off your knife when you get it out of the pot given half the chance.

I prefer jam, though my granddad made bramble jelly (American style jello-like-jam) which was really nice in a toasted peanut butter sandwich.

Someone suggested I try peanut butter with cheese. It was interesting, but I don't think it is worth getting the taste for it

My favorite bread topping is peanut butter and chocolate spread. Yum.

Somewhere in south-central England.

In my experience, French jams (conserves) are the loosest consistency.

The British jams are fairly firm, due to higher pectin content. They are more like a chunky paste.

If I understand it correctly, the American jelly is like a very firm jam which has had the fruit bits strained out before it was allowed to set.

Peanut butter jelly sucks, it doesn't help that I'm allergic to Peanuts, hate the damm things, so much death in such a small shell (wanders off into corner and prepares for nervous breakdown.)

A french fry sandwich in the uk is called a chip butty mate, its very very common here

But back on topic, chunky peanut butter with strawberry jam (the american style, i dislike the whole bits of strawberry in my jam thing) is amaaaazing

I'm not a fan of fruit chunks in mine as well.

My preference. Concord Grape Jelly, Crunchy Peanut Butter (the more crunch the better), and a nice wheat bread (honey-oat, multi-grain etc...). White bread is acceptable, but I think a less sweet tasting bread makes the pb&j stand out more.

Ooh I just thought of something. PB&J between a nice couple of slices of medium thickness sourdough that has been lightly toasted in a pan with butter. Hmm, butter *drool*

Dude, check my post. If it's got bits of fruit and seeds in it, even in America, it's jam. If it doesn't have bits of fruit and seeds, it's not "American-style jam," it's jelly. We have both jam and jelly, they are two different things and neither one of them are particularly "American" in style. Now if you want to get into marmalade, that's a slightly different story. Marmalade is basically marmalade, except that in the UK it tends to have a more bitter tang, while in the US it tends to be sweet.

What's interesting is, as far as I've seen so far, Marmalade in Germany could refer to jelly, jam, and actual marmalade.

It's really a pretty complex topic, and it behooves you inform yourself on the various types of fruit spreads, if you want to master the combined arts of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and teatime, as well as clever sandwich-making.
