The Children.
Low budget, little known, and nearly had me pooping in my strides.
Also, surprised no one has said 'Alien' yet. Such a good thriller!

You guys actually like the "new" Doctor who episodes?
I much preferred the old ones with plastic special effects. And I find both David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston extremely irritating actors.

Yes, I agree! I love that film but I can't say it ever scared me or creeped me out. I saw it when I was eleven and I was always absolutely fascinated by it. I loved it from the get go! Oddly (I'm sure due to my age) the scene where Ash assaults Ripley and tries to suffocate her with the rolled up magazine was disturbing to me probably because I had never seen such a graphic and honest/realistic portrayal of a violent assault between two humans (or so I initially thought) before.

I love all Doctor Who stuff. I currently have 90+ originals on VHS.
New Who is also pretty damned good! Stories are getting there and all, and Russell T Davies' departure should mean a lot less ropey plot lines and pointless fawning assistants!

That is a particularly impressive scene, especially when you consider their budget (or lack thereof).
I would like to propose an Interwebz toast to the genius' behind modern movie effects, who made something out of nothing, which cost next to nothing. I SALUTE YOU! (and simultaneously blow my nose at the tossers who depend entirely on CGI)

The closest I've come to being scared is the barn possession scene in The Exorcism of Emily Rose where she goes through like six demons in the span of a minute. Top notch acting, there.

Sorry, dragged mom to see this when it came out. We just laughed at it, it was so utterly over the top and stupid. Carpenter gets no marks from me on that film.

You effing what? David Tennant is an excellent Doctor! He really gets both the eccentric side and the serious killer side very well.
I'd like to add Wolf Creek. Totally believable and it's Australian to boot.

man, i remember getting up one night when i was like 9, and catching some "tales of horror" type show, and it scaring the bejezzus out of me.
all i remember now is some person getting an eye transplant, and then seeing the dead person it was from, and something to do with a hair implant that wasn't actually hair but some kind of parasite, which burrowed in and drove the guy mad, til a train hit him.

Ketara wrote:Whatever anyone says, the Japanese version of the Ring was terrible. Seriously, it was the worst horror film I've ever seen. There was very little actually scary in it, and the only good part that was even vaguely impressive happened 5 minutes before the end. I almost fell asleep, and my mother did. The Japanese version of Ring is mislabeled as a horror movie. It is actually a psycho-thriller, something that comes across much better in the original book it's based on and the actual sequel, Rasen(released at the same time in Japan so that movie goers could see them as a double feature if they wished). The movie is about suspense and solving the mystery, not about scares. The movie is only disappointing if you go into it with misconceptions of what it is.

Drag me to hell was the first movie in ages that magaed to give me a fright and by fright i mean that moment where you don't expect something to happen and you poop ya pants. It was great fun that movie.
Let the right one it.....Now that movie was great, i didn't have a clue what was going on but i was tense and i think it's classed as a horror.
while your on the subject though i watched a japanese movie where the reincarnation of a murderer and the re-incarnation of his victims were all drawn back to the scene of the murder and were making a movie re-enacting it and i cant remember what it was called! and ideas?

um, I hate to admit it, but I was REALLY scared at that part in "I am Legend" when he goes in after the dog. I guess I really wasn't expecting it from the movie.
Also the Indian Animated one. I think it was moreso the CONCEPT that disturbed me.

Tom Savini is/was more of a 'Gore' guy as it were. He did some other stuff but it was his graphic throat/eye/ear/nose rippings, bitings and such is where his genius lies! Don't misunderstand, I am a huge fan as well.
Also Rick Baker. Not gore so much as make-up/monster/animal effects.
Evil Dead (the original) is still a creepy little low budget flick.

Movies with creepy kids that A.) scream and puke everywhere... and/or B.) fly around laughing or generally being really creepy freak me the hell out... seriously though.
The only other thing that is scary the first maybe even second time is any flick with a well placed OOGIE BOOGIE move, most of the Alien movies pulled it off pretty well.
Oh, Arachnophobia was scary until the dude figure out how to roast them... almost informative if you ask me .
Hmmm... that is about it, maybe some War movies manage to really get the blood pumping, but I am not sure they are all that scary. Full Metal Jacket was pretty sad but not really scary.
