I'd say Texas Chainsaw Massacre (still gritty) or newer, maybe The Descent or Quarantine.

As bad as Cloverfield 's screenwriting .
Darkness Falls , it seem to have such nice concept ... but not scary either.
The Thing , i like :'D
I love Silent Hill ( have the DvD yay )
Alien / Aliens not scary , but its exciting . I have had atleast 7 dreams about them for some reason .
While cloverfeild's plot sucked you have to admire the success of their viral marketting.
And i too have had several alien dreams (mostly involved aliens attacking my school and killing everyone) yet they stopped when i actually saw the films
I get a lot of zombie related dreams, but I like Resident Evil too much. How about those films? Or are zombies not your thing? I can't think of any alien films, other than the obvious.
I saw a movie in a hotel recently called "D-Wars". All the actors were Americans, but the entire production was Korean. It was about some secret Snake army, but it was more of a CG Monster movie. Is this movie even known in North America/Europe/Australiasia? It was pretty lame story wise, but the fighting parts were cool.
I think the Shining is pretty scary. A lot of the Horror movies now are just shock gore fail. Most movies nowadays are fail. Don't mind me, I'm old.

Weird, same here. Mostly about either saving Vasquez or for some reason guarding Bishop.
You must have the hots for both of them. Do you get the urge to fap when Bishop walks on-screen?
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Actually its weird for me , it always seem to take place in Metro Town ( the mall near where i live )
they would come out from ceilings , air vents , change rooms etc etc. It always end with my gun not working properly , it only shoot like 5 meters far .
Then they get me :< ( must be too much AVP game lol )
Horror genre has always been one of the weaker ones however the black and white Night of the Living Dead and the old Exorcist are epic exceptions. 'Jacob's Ladder' is pretty good too and paved the way for a lot of horror/movie special effects.
Haute Tension/Switchblade Romance: not scary as such, but nailbitingly tense in places (which is appropriate, given the French title)
Mum & Dad: very sick and twisted - "Dad" (Perry Benson) is absolutely repellent. Again, not really scary, but certainly worth a look
The Wicker Man (the original): played on my mind for a long time. So few films use the richness of British folklore as a background, which is a shame. I haven't seen the Nicholas Cage re-make, and I'm not going to
It: if Pennywise doesn't disturb at least a little bit, nothing will...
Nails: a Russian film which - well, watch it if you dare. Don't come crying back to me if you do!
Visions of Suffering: another Russian movie which features some fairly disturbing and innovative character designs
Splatter: Naked Blood: a Japanese film which should test your endurance to its limits; it's essentially three long self-dismemberment scenes (the plot revolves around people discovering a drug which makes you feel pleasure instead of pain).
These are all just off the top of my head, but Wolf Creek (as already mentioned) and The Wicker Man are my picks. I've had plenty of dreams about the creatures from Alien/Aliens attacking me too! (Always exciting rather than frightening.)

Descent is great until you see the BG's, then you can't stop laughing. "Thats the best you got? GC's parakeets would utterly kick their asses."
-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG
-"Don't mind Frazzled. He's just Dakka's crazy old dude locked in the attic. He's harmless. Mostly."

Scary Alien films are hard to comeby these days, as media saturation has numbed us to alien horror....a really creepy alien movie that messed me up was the precusor to that new flick "Fourth kind" called "Communion" with Christopher Walken....now, of course anything with him in is automatically creepy....but there is a scene...where he is in the bedroom, and you are seeing what he sees, and everything thing seems normal....well, look real close at what you are seeing cause it blew my mind.....
Any Asian Horror is the way to go now...cerebral, atmosphere and visuals are the best way to scare...not Gore....Ju On is very good....( I even liked the american version! Buffy lol)
Heh, a movie that is disturbing is also good....District 9 was very disturbing....especially those Alien weapons....I definately flinched when they started to discharge those....wasnt expecting that!!!
15000 - Tyranids 4000 - Skaven 1500 - Dark Eldar 2500 - Daemons 1500 - Necrons
The only Aliens stuff that have caught me off gaurd of late are single scenes sadly. Signs in general is an poor film overall, but there is something quite disturbing about the moment when they see the alien on the roof of the barn.
Same goes for that awful film about the family getting attacked by aliens on a isolated faem, some mock video tape thing.
When the boy goes upstairs and the alien is behind the door and you see it for a split second on the camcorder, there is a primal fear moment there.
Other than that, I agree most horror is boring atm, slasher isn't scary, its squeemish and thats really its own genre.
"That's not an Ork, its a girl.." - Last words of High General Daran Ul'tharem, battle of Ursha VII.

Furiously. I've gotten carpal tunnel so many times it's not even funny.
BAck on topic: try and sit through more then five minutes of a "SCi Fi Original Movie". Good god my eyes fled in terror.
Try original children of the corn.
Pandorum looks good. Just saw preview trailer on apples quicktime site.
Event Horizon scared the crap outa me when I was a kid.
Exorcism of Emily Rose is also good as well, some jump in your seat moments in that one.

A honestly scary movie is HARd to come by. Have you thought about playing some "survival" games that are intended to scare the poop from your pants? Sometimes those can do the trick
ALSO HOW are you watching these movies? Do you watch them on a puny TV with no surround sound? If so change that.
At the very lest, get a make shift surround sound set on your tv. Ive been scared just by a train comming into the scene. Loud surround sound will change the way you enjoy a scary movie.
I always watch scary movies in total darkness, only the light from the tv allowing me to go grab more beer from the fridge without breaking my neck in my own house. LOL.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Well, the Nicholas Cage version of The Wicker Man looks pretty funny, but definatly not scary, the original however, particularly the very end,was clasicly disturbing.
I too have to cast a vote for the original " Shining",Nicholson is just pure joy to watch in that film, and the little kid is fething creepy.
Automatically Appended Next Post: @ Luna
I should also add that if you havn't seen it I highly recomend "American Werewolf in London",not "scary" persay, but definatly an enjoyable film.

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
