Listen to Kilkrazy. I find that when I get into a groove, painting can be quite enjoyable. The odd thing is, out of my current batch or orks, the only 'finished' unit is a mob of thirty! (yep, speed painting the batch of thirty worked out better for me than doing small units)

Focus on which miniatures are 'important'. While you may be a perfectionist, realize that basic troopers don't need awesome paint jobs. Though I firmly support taking time with your painstakingly converted miniatures.

Perhaps you could try to focus on painting your converted miniatures first, you know, the ones that you've put effort into and love, and then once you're used to painting often and continuously, move onto the more 'speed paint' kind of jobs.

Well I got started this evening on some Nobz from the AoBR box, am doing a batch of five, it is slow going (have done all the metal bits and am moving onto the skin now. I have decided I will crack out the camera tomorrow and have a go at posting a blog.

In other news, I'm glad you posted this thread Squilverine. As I said, I have the same painting issues and will be starting a painting thread to help motivate/keep track/get tips.

Since I've got back into ipainting and gaming, to save myself time I'm actually repainting a lot of stuff I did. Blending a yellow up is more time consuming than a black with quick extreme highlightlights and skipping highlights on the bone areas for now (planning to go back after a load have been done blend them all up one week). But with limited time (spending time with my wife, kids straightenignt he hosue up and IF my problems with disks in my back will let me even be able to get comfy to paint a while) its still going slow.
Still it is encouraging me that each squad I have done while nowhere near as good as I used to paint is improving each time as I get back into it. This is encouraging and doing 2 to 4 models a time makes it seem to go faster. Usually have 10 to 12 models sitting on the area I paint at and those 2 to 4 every couple of nights getting done makes me feel like I'm making progress.

My wife dreaded me posting in this thread because she knows the stuff I could come out with. Not because its happened, but because my mind is in the gutter most of the time . And look I gave sensible advice. That said even she said new girlfriend time lol. Just hope she doesnt get any ideas from this about having me stop cluttering the kitchen cupboards with WiP's and stuff I havent space in boxes or cases to store...

And going to look into starting a blog too for the iyanden to ulthwe repaint. Now I need camera and photo advice as my photos of miniatures always look terrible and without the blending detail.

In exactly the same situation (although managed to lobby successfully for Space Hulk as a Christmas present). Seemingly have at least one troop choice for every 40K race in my wardrobe.

I just try and pick a painting night and stick to it, although its getting harder and harder post marriage.

Painting this evening has been quite good I am now about half way through 5 AoBR Nobz (not bad going for me!)

Getting shot of the girlfriend is not an option, I love her to bits and we are getting engaged after 6 years this winter I also feel she puts up with a lot more from me, apparently I am very high maintenance

So good people of Dakka, what can I do to get those miniatures painted, and what advice do you have to get my sorry arse motivated?

I'd get a new girlfriend myself. Thats just a bad idea right there. Do you get to dictate how many outfits? SHoes? or what not she has or uses?

I dont like manipulation myself. Bad for relationships.

Iv been going through that "I have so much stuff to paint I just dont want to even start" phase the last few weeks. The misses has imposed a similar "no new models till what you have is done."

Iv been trying to paint at least the HQs, but again being in the same boat as you, feel that every detail needs to be perfect, even if my best looks like crap compared to most others paint jobs.

My friend, then you have failed to recognize that there are indeed two primary objectives to this mission. Surely, the obvious objective is 1) To get rid of the Unpainted Legions of Grey Marines, Ashy Wastes Orks, and the like lying without color besides pewter or plastic in the bottom of your wardrobe by colorizing them and bringing them out of their current 1950's televison state. However, there is another primary objective to be observed at ALL times; equivalent even to retaining one's honor: 2) Maintaing a Steady Spread of Legs. This is perfectly fine; even the best of Commanders loose sight of their Big Picture in it's entirety from time to time. This threat does not seem unreasonable to me. Paint what you have before buying more, it is a waste otherwise. Just do what she says.

Try painting in the morning before work, say for an hour a day. Works great.

Great to see you're getting back into it and congrats on the engagement. Now just get her into painting as it is "therapeutic", "good stress release" and believe me, she will be the one wanting to get you painting when she does on those quiet nights in chatting away and having a laugh.

Try some speed painting methods. There is a great tutorial here.

Simple and quick to do if you don't mind a relatively simple highlights, but I think it looks pretty good.

Yea you asked for that I cant deny it one time I had a plate thrown at me the time of the month is nothing to be trifled with nope not by any means.

Plus I find on the Mini's front one thing impedes me HAVING A JOB!.When I wasnt employed I banged out the first 2000pts of my Crimson Ravens,Also my Death Guard I was on a mission when the ugly real world of work calls with its evil tones then what us men really want to do is put on hold for meanless stats and screaming customers!.

god I HATE my job! and thats a understatement twelve hours that can be put to use painting instead is drawn out into a massive GAK pit.

Finding time to paint can be a tough search,with work,kids,etc,it's hard to get some time alone to actualy put brush to mini.
Basicly,I get 6 to 7 hours on the weekend ( 3 and a half on saturday,3 and a half or so on sunday)in which,barring kid crisis,I can "paint in peace".
I also manage to steal an hour or so a few days durring the week,after the kids are sleeping,unless the little woman has "other ideas",in wich case I always agree with her.
Now,as far as "sex bans" and ultimatiums concerning minis...really?,so long as the bills are paid,the kids have what they need and we get a few nights out,my girl could care less what I spend my money on (which I suppose could be seen as an unspoken ultimatium,but hey,I handle my business) and "sex bans"...wow,maybe I'm just lucky because I don't ever see that happening.

Spray & wash.

Buy spray primer, acrylic spray paint, and a set of GW washes. You can lay down base color *very* quickly via spray paint. A little detail & wash, and you'll be tabletop quality in no time.

Also, be thankful she didn't withhold the goods. Then you'd be motivated and angry.

BTW, you should insist on "progress payments" - dirty bonus sex that you don't normally get...
