People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Yeah yeah, I know, I'm just being a grouch today. Sorry if anyone took offence. I'd better back out of this now.

When you ascend to Modhood it takes place outside of normal Space and Time, therefore I have now in fact always been a mod, just like Slaanesh has always existed.

No-one earns their money, you just turn up, do what you do and get paid what you get paid. It's the most efficient system we've got, but it's got stuff all to do with 'earning'. If it was about earning your money, nurses would be on a lot more than brokers.
So at the end of another week, if someone drops their spare change on a lottery ticket because it helps them dream of winning it big and having an easier life, fair enough.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
I used to think that lotteries were taxes on the stupid, but after about 10 years in the workforce I realized I was never going to get rich merely by working hard or saving the money I can afford to put away.
Cheese: I politely ask that you NOT call Lotteryism 'idiocy'. That's insulting religion, something not permitted on this forum. This is why we can't have threads about religion; they ultimately devolve into trolling, , and people forgetting Rule #1.
My brother always said that the lottery is an additional tax for people who can't do math.
no swearing please ! ta.

I see more value in the lottery personally, but hey, it doesn't get protected 'cos no-one thought to write a book about it 2000 years ago (just incase it gets missed: wink wink wink,

I think it was a zinger about something posted in the Religion thread. Seriously, I turn my back for an hour, and it devolved into an "is NOT" shouting match about absolutes... All of the naysayers were right... Apparently, we can't talk about it because we can't agree to disagree. I am sad it is dead, but it ran its course. Let sleeping dogs lie.
Back on topic. I think Cheese has a right to say what he thinks, because he doesn't have a career, he has a job. (No offense Cheese) Bills, health insurance, food, rent, clothes for the children, diapers... It is something you are not experienced with. You will, in time, and your opinion may change.
All I am saying is: People have different situations. I make approx. 45,000 USD a year. That doesn't mean I more correct than a person working minimum wage. That being said, I do occasionally splurge (8 USD a month) like I said above. I want a PS3 dammit!

Don't be too stern Fraz, meaningful discourse will only be acheived when we are free to communicate our feelings about certain subjects. If someone disagrees so strenuously with an ethos or religion or anything, it's an interesting opportunity to find out WHY they do.

Er, no actually. Dakka rules extend to discussion of religions and inverse, even here.

I invite you to visit an unmoderated forum, return, and then express the same opinion without looking sheepish. Try this one. The internet is not a classroom.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.
Despite rumors to the contrary, I really am searching for the thread where we can discuss meaningful topics of life, the universe, and everything, from various religious and nonreligious perspectives without getting into the inevitable snarkfest about page 5.

Didn't we have one that went on, intermittently, for like 35 pages?
I think maybe locking, and reopening, threads can work well in those circumstances as that's what I recall happening in that case.

True enough. But after the 8th incarnation of "Lol Jesus lovers/atheists/insert thing" the only thing left to learn is that the internet doesn't have much to teach without filtration. There's a reason why all our institutions of learning feature professors until at least the graduate level.

I think there would be something of a difference between Dakka unmoderated and that forum, simply because Dakka is a wargames forum with an Off Topic section, while that forum is specifically dedicated to arguments between Atheism and Christianity.
Also, any idea what the symbol for "Atheism" in the corner of that site is supposed to be? Some sort of wishbone? An eagle's talons? I have no idea.
