Very illegal, its a Federal offense even if the comment is in jest. Even if you only wish him ill, and not attempt to enact on it.

However that is in the US. You and I are in the UK, we can wish ill of the US President anytime we want. Between the Bush and Obama there is a lot to wish about.

Enjoy it while you can boys. Our secret ninja kittens are on the way to deal with this insolence.

Somewhere in south-central England.

It came on the news while we were all sitting around enjoying G&T. So I am an eyewitness to the fact that Gore Vidal didn't shoot the Pope.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I really like Gore Vidal. In listening to previous comments of his on a variety of mediums he is nothing but offering up a philosophy. In the sense that what the administration of President Bush did to US policy abroad and domestic is shameful. He reversed 50 years of progress. The quandary the US remains in now is ne of repeated failure. Apparently the US didn't come to grips with the reality the Brits faced in the early 20th century in Iraq, and still have yet to learn the folly of effectively ending guerilla war. These efforts only strengthen the resolve of insurgents. The US could do well to have a 2 week dictatorship to get some progressive legislation passed. I am sick of the congressional aristocracy, and the constant asinine arguments. In summation I enjoy Gore Vidal and agree mostly with everything he says. Someday the rest of America could wish to be as enlightened.

Bah, presidents get wished to be dead all the time.

You can't take it too seriously, unless the person themself is seeming pretty serious.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Now I am not your standard conservative (try chewing on socialist-libertarian for a bit), but you openly acknowledge that you support a political official to be assassinated?

I know politics is serious business, but, really?

"Mostly" is the key word. My writing tends to follow a very "lawful Evil" structure. Always a loophole.

I am a fairly left leaning socially progressive libertarian.

What we need is a firm hand to manage the course. I nominate myself for dictator er President for Two Weeks or until the present crisis passes.

Ah. I hear this a lot, but it usually just comes down to "I want a dictator to come down and install whatever I like politically" more than real support for a real dictatorship by a real political leader.

I'm not sure how viable it's going to be to try and find everyone who threatens the president.

I mean, how many are really going to have the capability with modern security, much less the actual guts to try something? (And who really wants Biden as president?)

Yes, but the owners of this site are in the US and we're here their invitation. So it's probably put in the 'best to not' category.

And just in case anyone cares, threats against Obama are up 400% as compared to Bush.

Meanwhile, Gore Vidal is a good one to spend some time listening to. Not because everything he says is alright, but because much of what he says isn't. Seriously, if you want to learn to think for yourself and not just accept an author at face value, then reading Gore Vidal will get you a long way towards that. The guy has a lot of really useful insight, but he also does stuff like talk about the assassination of former presidents.

Well, it's the mandate of the Secret Service to investigate every single instance, so they seem to think it's possible.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
