Manchu wrote:Miley Sirus definitely looks like . . . well, like a lot of girls. (For proof, see /b/.) And Gaga isn't that attractive obviously. Hence all the makeup/veils/sunglasses/etc, I think. But I think you're selling her talent pretty short, sebster. She's no assembly line pop star. I really think people are too dismissive of pop overall. (Not that there's no reason to be, after the 90s.)
I wasn't dismissive of her talent at all, quite the opposite. Despite being an average looking girl she's become a popstar, in an age when it appeared you had to be very good looking to even get a foot in the door, it's quite an achievement. Her music plays a part in that, but I don't think it's groundbreaking or that far ahead of the rest of the pack (pop is a genre that's very to consistently excel in). I think the thing that sets her apart is her sense of celebrity and fashion, which is a definite skill. In that sense Madonna is probably the closest comparison.
It was interesting to see in the recent music poll metal only picked up 16% of the vote, given the number of people who come into these threads to talk about how great metal is. I had assumed metal was very big amongst gamers, but looking at that poll metal is only liked by around 1/6 of gamers. Must just be a very vocal minority.
“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
Um, I see that I must have misread you there, my good sebster. Just a few comments: Pop music is never groundbreaking in the truest sense. It wouldn't be pop then, now would it? Her music is her own but still manages to be catchy enough for radio play. That's the very definition of excelling at pop. Can she keep it up? I think Bad Romance is a good sign that she's gonna do so for now. And it's a good sign that her sound is not suffering for her fame.

@Manchu: Agree across the board. Sad as it may be, however, my point in posting Gaga-related content isn't to win anyone over. I know that at least a few people will watch and be interested, and, whether they want to admit it or not, start to like it That's my real mission. Art or not, talented or not, god she inspires the hell out of me. I guess I feel like that's worth sharing with a crowd that otherwise will miss the opportunity Also, conflict about things that aren't important (like politics and toy soldier game rules) are fun too. As for her looks, I don't think anyone's claiming she's the hottest thing to walk the earth. I want pretty much want to "feth" her brain though.
@seb: I think their "metal" is compensating for something What I don't understand is why people act like metal is the end all, be all when it's just another genre. God forbid you only eat one flavor of ice cream ever, you know? That being said, Dream Theater is my favorite band of all time, and I listen to my fair share of non-Prog metal as well. Liking one style doesn't exclude any others :p

Screw this gak, I'm going to go listen to OPERATION GROUND AND POUND.
Because DRAGONFORCE IS THE HARDEST METAL KNOWN TO MAN, and that song was annoying and had bart-simpson-people running around.

As much as I don't like Lady Gaga, I have to admit her MTV music awards performance was pretty cool. Same with Madonna, I don't like her music but back in the 80's and 90's her performances at big shows were pretty spectacular.

This conversation has even begun to boggle my internet-hardened mind.
I have read Cannerus in other places saying that some of her live stuff (SNL performance for one) haven't gone well so I am glad to hear that she can do a show. (Also, Ozy, thanks for being objective.)

JUST. PLAIN. AWESOME! Gackt has more talent in his trench coat buttons than Gaga, and Mana is way hotter... MAOR MANA!!!
Yes, I know... I still think Mana is hotter...
But... Mana's a guy...
Unless, like in Cannerus' modelling thread, this is another "Lady Gaga is actually a dude" thing.

Mana has stated that he feels his musical inspiration is feminine in nature, hence the drag.

No, not really. I was being ironic in a snarky kinda way. It is more like a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" type thing... Off topic: We as a society put too much emphasis on feminine beauty, yet if a dude dresses up as a chick, everyone is like "WTF? That's gay!" Have you seen this man dance in high heels? Amazing! IMHO, talent is more important than beauty.
On topic: I prefer Lily Allen to Lady Gaga based on musical talent and lyrical content:

Oh, no doubt.
That said, I'd sleep with Gackt(if my wife would let me). He's freakin hott. Does that make me a little gay? I can live with that, I'm secure enough.
Then again, I've seen American bands attempt to pull of the androgyny that Gackt, Mana, and other Japanese bands do and whites just can't succeed at it.

Sounds like a conversation my wife and I had last night about Johnny Depp. No, I don't think that is gay. I believe every one has masculine/feminine duality. Some embrace it, others don't.

I think we all know that Asian men and women just have interchangeable bits on the same chassis Show me an entirely macho Asian guy. Sulu kinda ruined that for them.

Well that's simply not true.

If you can kill a man with your bare hands who cares if you come off as "pretty"? Lol.
I wouldn't care what someone called me because I'd just rip there head off, spine and all, Sub-zero style.
