I have the eye of chaos across my back, if anyone has a copy of the ancient 'Space Marine' game, the precursor of Epic, it's the one on the back of the rulebook...or was it on the back of the Adeptus Titanicus rulebo...never mind, I got it done when I was 18, it about covers my upper back and took 8 hours of real pain.
I don't regret any of it and it even got me laid a couple of times.
But, it's on my back, so I never see it and it never bothers me...but more importantly folks in the office never see it either and nor do folks at job interviews.

That's such a gross over simplification. The reason one group is acceptable and the other isn't is because of the reasons behind such modifications, which is why they're NOT really under the same thing(yes, they are as a general, but specifics are more important).

ok so a breast implant at its base is really different that a piercing? You are sticking a an outside object in your body to change your appearance. Sounds like the same reason to me. I have read and watched a lot of stuff on this topic. I have also spent a lot of time at shops and know many tattoo artists. Any body modification is based on intent of the person under going the procedure. Heck look at the cat guy. He had made his appearance to be like a cat because that is his totem. He is native american.

and I would sit around with friends going on about what individuals we were, when suddely it dawned on me that we were just putting on a uniform and had in fact sucumbed to what I call " the conformity of non-conformity".
To me true non-comformity is a state of mind,a shift in how you see the world and how you decide to allow it to effect you,not in wearing a Sex Pistols shirt and slam dancing.
Now don't get me wrong,I still wear my spikey leather jacket and boots ( although I haven't worn a mohawk in 11 years) and of course I still have tats, and some piercings ( though I've taken all my facial ones out),but I also wear dress shirts and slacks when the situation arises...even suits,my point is,one shouldn't let their appearence define them.

This thread has show n how much you all listen to the stereotypes and don't know anything about the culture to it. Body building, implants, plastics surgery, etc all fall under the same umbrella as tats and piercing but you all seem to never add that in or any other stuff than it doesn't look professional.
I'm not a making value judgments on the people who choose to get tattoos or piercings, I'm simply informing the OP that society, as a whole, does. It's called the counter-culture for a reason - because it goes against the majority's idea of what civilization is about. My wife is into the piercing thing, although thankfully not in her face. Personally, I think facial piercings are about as unattractive as you can get, but if you want to do it, that's your right. It isn't your right to demand that other people not judge you for the choices you make though. You're going out of your way to look unusual. Expect to be treated unusually.

If your job is to represent a multinational corporation at a personal level to senior citizens and other consumers, exactly how are you going to do that job better by looking like a member of the counter-culture? You're not. Like it or not, some jobs are about appearance, and the impression you make on people. It's really all a matter of perspective. If you want to work at a Harley Dealership, tattoos and piercings are not going to be held against you. If you want to work at Wells Fargo, they are. This isn't rocket science people.

@redbeard while I don't disagree with some of your points. I disagree how people have restated what their parents tell them and how you worded a few of your statements. I do think some of the posters should have said I don't like it personally instead of saying some of their posts. Though as far as rocket science.. It would be easier than opinions lol cause we can prove rocket science one way or the other. Preference on the other hand is quite difficult.

Because popular culture has decided they are a bit weird many people never change their opinions much from their folks opinions. It's hard to dispute that because things like racism(a learned behavior) is still around. I guess media tells people what is the in thing as well. I hate explaining on forums because it's so slow compared to talking in person.

Wait your comparing this to racism? Seriously?
I'd compare it to a mental disorder if you're going to go there. People who intentially puncture themselves need mental therapy.

Just get a tattoo of a piercing instead. Much less vulnerable in a fight and less likely to infect as well. I'd compare it to a mental disorder if you're going to go there. People who intentially puncture themselves need mental therapy. Lets not go down this rout, there are a needless number of things Americans do on a daily basis that would constitute a mental disorder to those the customs foreign too. Do you cut your grass? Why do you spend effort and money to make sure that the plants outside of your house are a few inches shorter? Body modification is a form of internal expression and physical individuality. It's been present in every human culture for much longer than recorded history and in many cases serves a survival function (scarification imbues resistance to pain, tribal tattoing symbolized heritage and nationality in a time before common language, etc).

This annoys me. I am no more a dimwit because I choose to have short hair and no piercings/tattoos, than you would be for HAVING them. Not engaging in body modification is not indicative of a lack of creativity, and it doesn't make you more of an 'individual' or more creative to engage in such a practice.
All I would say is - if it floats your boat, set sail.

Perhaps you might be less annoyed if you went back and re-read my entire post,as my use of the word "dimwit" was not ment as some broad "catch all" generalization of all people who choose to refrain from " body modifications",mearly to convey a single scenario between two hypothetical individuals.

@FITZZ - Um, I CAN read actually - what you posted was just a little vague. You didn't specifically outline any scenario, you just said companies were rejecting intelligent people with piercings, in favour of a a dimwit who conforms to " the accepted norm". It's a massive generalisation, that. The more likely scenario is that an equally qualified person WITHOUT visible piercings or tattoos would be more likely to get the job. There was a certain amount of hostility in the phrase, that's all. The dimwit really, is the person who turns up to a job interview with jewellery in their face thinking that's a professional look.
I've met many people with piercings and extensive tattooing - almost all of them seemed to think that they were more intelligent/interesting/creative/cool than people who weren't into that sort of body-modification, so the prejudice goes both ways.
Personally, I see piercings etc. as the visual equivalent of the teenager in his/her bedroom, playing music really loud. 'You will notice me!'
But that's just me, I'm not judging anyone who's into it.

I've often wondered why this is so in many cases, many people I've known with various piercings are extreamly inteligent people, artist.musicians, students and such, yet for reasons that make little sense to me,many businesses would chose to pass on an inteligent individual with a nose ring in favor of a dimwit who conforms to " the accepted norm".
Every area has its "accepted norm." Walk into the above areas with a full suit, crew cut, and NRA button and see how you are looked on.
Agreed Frazz,in fact I have on several occasions pointed out my friends hypocricy for being judgemental of people who have shown up at shows/clubs in "preppie" attire, IMO it's not about piercings, clothing, tattoos or lack off,it's about content and character of a person.
Word.
I also wrote this as well. Automatically Appended Next Post: However I can understand were it could be assumed I was refering to "every one" who would be considered " the social norm"...that wasn't my intentions.
