Ok I do agree with Mik that doing this will probably drive up the attendance which to me is fething sweet, ut tothat end...why an 18 month circuit? Couldn't 12 months work out the same way really?

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Looks like the closest event and for someone who lives on the southern east coast.. Dallas or Baltimore do not count.

The point you may be missing about this new circuit is that any shortage of local events is on YOU now, and not GW. If you want an event, start one or partner with others with the same interest.

Sounds much like the situation in the pacNW a few years ago (and really the entire west coast) when GW pulled all their events out here -- so I feel your pain. Though I think that glut of major events contributed in a surge of quality indy events around here. Maybe something similar will happen down south?

Need to turn the question around: Where are the tournaments in the SE, and have those TO's contacted GW, (specifically the team in Promotions), and worked to get on the circuit?
GW isn't going to create tournaments, that's up to the gamers/clubs/ TO's/stores. Automatically Appended Next Post: Empchild wrote:Ok I do agree with Mik that doing this will probably drive up the attendance which to me is fething sweet, ut tothat end...why an 18 month circuit? Basically, after the first 18 month circuit, the next will always be 12 months, running June 1st of one year to May 30th of the next year. This corresponds to GW's corporate year, and their budgets. Corporate year, promotion departments budget year, and tourney circuit all corresponding to each other will help them give out more support.
And attendance is up
Got to get my butt in gear. We've been scrambling the last 3 weeks negotiating a permanent tournament space in the mall, talking with GW, and doing a year long schedule of events. BAM! Tournament listing goes live and I've got my pants around my ankles as far as having hard details on the website for people to look at. Been fielding a lot of calls today. Finishing off some details and I'll have a preliminary event listing up by tonite, and already getting people calling and signing up from Florida and Baltimore.
If you pull off one in Boston, I have 6 people ready to sign up from my group in Philly.

Well, used to be you said "independent GT", to distinguish them from the GW run GT's. At this point, it's more of a habit than necessity, since GW will only be running one GT a year, and that will be an invitational, pulling from the pool of people that win 1st and 2nd at the Indy GT's.
But basically, at an Indy GT, the whole event is run by an individual/team/club and not by GW, although GW might supply prize support or other benefits.

I dont think he meant you directly by any means on that one mik, but to that level you have a point that I dont think you even intended to bring up. Some people do rig tournies and for what reason I have no idea. I mean honestly what does anyone have to gain from winning a hometown tourney, because most of which is to gain is at best a cool trophy, but it means nothing if you didnt really earn it. I have had friends in the past not talk to me for a week or two because I was impartial at a tourney and they expected me to boost up their scores or give them the easy match up for somone they knew they could tool, and to that end I never do. Personally in a RT the first round if you want to do a challenge I allow it, but after that it falls to points and such. I digress though and for that I do apologize.

Ahhh, gotcha. Sorry, that was meant as a more generic statement about the possibility of the same player(s) winning multiple tournies, not a suggestion of any sort regarding you and/or Showcase comics. For any unintended slur/slight I do apologize.
Empchild wrote:I dont think he meant you directly by any means on that one mik,
It is my fault tho for using Showcase as a posibile example tho, since that is his store........... Should have stated it in more generic terms.
But along those lines, if all of the rules for a tourney are not posted up front, then the local players obviously do have a 'home court' advantage, making it more likely that they can tool their lists and tactics to better performance. The local players are more likely to know the general types of scenarios that will be used, the scoring that will be in place (comp, painting, the non-battle point scores). Has GW set up anything to monitor or made any rules/recommendations about how the events should be run? It's all well and good for them to announce this grand tourney circuit, but it's irresponsible of them to leave it 'unattended'.

Don, give me a call, and I'll fill you in on what I can. Some stuff they've told me I can't talk about until they announce it. Other stuff I can fill you in on. Automatically Appended Next Post: The local players are more likely to know the general types of scenarios that will be used, the scoring that will be in place (comp, painting, the non-battle point scores).
Agreed. For the GT in February, I'm looking to put out the scenarios, or a genaral discription of the scenarios, a month ahead of time. They may be ones I've used in other tournaments, and that levels the playing field somewhat as someone that's played in tourneys over the years will recognize them.
Painting is going to include things like conversions, basing, having a 'trophy model' in the army, and possibly the display board for the army. The range of points for those will be posted by the end of the year, to give people two months advance notice. Painting will be done by a group, (None of whom should be plaing in the tournament), I'm going to get with them ahead of time to get the guidlines set, and post a summary. Painting is always going to be a tougher one to quantify. Guidelines for the comp system will also be posted ahead of time. Like painting, this will be judged by a group of people. (None of whom will be playing in the tournament.)
Hope that helps

There is a great store in the Chattanooga area (Dicehead Games) that actively supports 40K tourneys (Big Waagh, Adepticon, etc) that has a several great tournaments a year - Maul in the Mall in particular (80' sh participants) - that would have been an obvious choice to have on the circuit. But not there.

Not sure how GW chose their events at all?
The events on the circuit are the tournaments that 1) they knew about and 2) They had some sort of contact with the Tournament Organizer. They started with the list they had from last year, contacted those people. Those TO's spread the word some, and gave feedback about other tournaments. Some TO's contacted GW when they heard about it, some didn't. Some never heard about it. Some don't want to be on it. Some mean't to, and then never got around to it.
Now that they have the first year set up, I'm sure there are a lot of people wanting to get in, and probably will in the following year. Talk to the local store, or tournament organizer, and make sure they know about the circuit, and have contacted GW about it. (Specifically, contacted GW promotions department, and talked to either John, Tom, or Ed.)

that can't be the case - it is really a grand conspiracy by GW to keep some parts of the country tourney free.
In all seriousness, I hope that they keep this going, I know that they have had a couple of false starts in the past for big tourney seasons and stuff - hopefully since this really doesn't cost them much in terms of time or money, it will have legs.
