nice! i really enjoy your fiction...a third person perspective gives your army some context of how they fit into real space...rare for a daemon army!

I like the Changeling. More than a pile of flesh, it looks as though it's writhing and spasming.

Thanks, I was thinking John Carpenter's The Thing.

And thank you to you as well, Antman. Your Deathguard are so freaking awesome. I made my wife come over and look at it last night.

Before I forget it, here is the paint scheme for the daemonettes (it will be a little while before I get back to them)

prime white
thinned down skull white over the whole model
paint leviathan purple wash as carefully as possible in the shaded areas (I may try washing the whole thing and highlighting up in the future)
clean up leviathan purple with watered down skull white
the hair is warlock purple with a careful drybrush/highlight of warlock purple with a little skull white mixed in and then washed with very watered down liche purple
The claws start with liche purple and are then given a wash of badab black - they are then highlighted with liche purple and then a couple more times with different shades of liche purple and skull white added
The gold is tau sept ochre followed by shining gold and then washed with devlan mud and carefully highlighted with shining gold. then I mixed skull white with shining gold and did another careful highlight the final highlight was made from mixing chainmail and shining gold
they eyes were colored pure black (think creepy spider eyes) with a micron pen

the tile is deneb stone for the checks and in the cracks and skull white for the white ones - this might change since the model is so light it kind of gets washed away
the rubble is codex gray drybrushed over chaos black.
the rim of the base is bestial brown

How well do you like the Micron pen? I have been considering getting one because of the scripting I do with my templars. Up to this point I have been brush freehanding all the writing. Would you say it is worth the investment?

Absolutely love it. My templars were originally the reason I got it - it makes it so much easier to do script on seals and stuff. It is really clean and easy to use.

I really like the conversions on the Daemons. Also, your gold on the Daemonette is quite a good contrast to the white skin.

Hopping on the pain wagon

I returned from my searches exhausted and hoping to gain some small amount of - hopefully dreamless - rest. Awaiting me on the door to my hab was a piece of parchment bearing the seal of no less than the Archivist General. I broke the seal and unfolded the parchment. It was a notification that I was being released from my duties (no small surprise this, as I had not been at my assigned station in well over a week) and, as my hab was both owned and provided for by the Administratum, I was to have all personal effects out of the hab in 2 days time.

I felt a fear in belly. While I am not a man of deep means, I have always had a roof over my head. I entered my hab and looked around at those personal effects I had gathered over my life. There was the signed third edition copy of Felensender's "By The Light of a Dying Star". Over there was the quill set my auntie had given me upon receiving my commission as a scrivenor. All these things and more no longer seemed to matter to me, my first thought was that perhaps I could sell them and receive some small windfall with which I could rent a hab.

With these thoughts in my mind I collapsed on the bed certain that sleep would elude me in even these last days. This may very well have been the case as events unfolded - ah but I get ahead of myself!

I am not sure how I came to it, but I found myself entering the library of a small Universitet of which I had not before seen. The musty smell of parchment and burning tallow greeted me. Candles burned in ancient candelabras like tiny stars over the wax mountains which had formed beneath them. I confess that there was some strangeness in the light which emanated from the candles - it seemed to paint the patrons of the library with a bluish hue. I know not why I approached one of these solemn figures but when I arrived he looked at me - the dancing candles played a trick upon my eyes and for the merest second I felt that the custodian's amber eyes were doubled one on top of the other! This moment passed however and he handed to me a sheaf of parchment.

I was confused to see the name Bertram von Lingernstein written in fine calligraphy. As you are surely aware, von Lingernstein is the Archivist General! At this point I began to suspect this nocturnal journey no more than a painting on the canvas of an exhausted and overstressed mind. Still, I was curious and began to flip through the pages. Mixed in amongst the prose of what could be no less than a full dossier on the Archivist General were photographs of von Lingernstein in the company of a rakish fellow dressed in fine (though somewhat flamboyant) clothes with a thin power rapier at his belt. A quick glance at the accompanying text informed me that this fellow was Duke Falchas, a Rogue Trader of ill-repute currently in exile for sharing Imperial knowledge with all manner of Xenos! And here were pictures and an accompanying viddisc showing the Archivist General handing over great stacks of documents!

If only this were more than a dream all would be well! I would go to the von Lingernstein and demand that continue my wages and living situation in exchange for my silence! It was then that I began to stir from sleep as the sun shone in between the slats of the blinds of my East-facing window. I was crestfallen and then I noticed, sitting on my end table, a certain file. My nocturnal wandering had been more of a sleepwalking session, apparently! I flipped through the pages and saw that they were exactly as in my "dream"! I must clean up now and make myself presentable, for I have an important meeting with an august personage this morning.

I began painting my horrors for the Aero Hobbies Tale of Many Gamers. I realized that I have 5 units of 5 and thought that it would be fun to paint a unit of 5 as Blue Horrors - these are the ones I have named "Arikham's Scholars". I actually have 26 horrors, and I need to paint up the Bolt of Tzeentch model for this unit (those will be the serpentine ones made from spawn bits). My thinking on doing 5 of these as well, is that they will make good musicians if I choose to disperse them into the other squads - you know, singing the blues and all that.

Anyway, here they are -

My paint scheme is pretty basic for the blue horrors -
Mordian Blue base coat
a few different dry brushes and highlights made from mixing skull white into mordian blue
a heavy and mostly undiluted wash of asurmen blue
the eyes are just sunburst yellow with a thinned down baal red wash and then a touch of sunburst yellow
the claws are bleached bone
The mouth/tongue/gums are a basecoat of mechrite red with a blood red highlight and a baal wash
the teeth are pure skull white

The tile on the base is a basecoat of astronomican grey with a badab black wash.
The black tiles are a mix of astronomican grey and chaos black highlighted pretty haphazardly
the white tiles mix of astronomican grey with skull white highlighted pretty heavily
The sand/rubble is chaos black with an astronomican grey drybrush

That demonette really photographs well.

I'm loving the blue horrors, can't wait to see the pink ones...

One suggestion... i think I see at least one horror that has another horror climbing out of its mouth. On that sculpt, it would be cool to see the one 'inside' be pink... and vice versa on the pink horrors.

I'll warn again on washing the white model with purple ink and then building up white over it. It will not 'save' time at all... you'll either have to spend a significant amount of time to layer wet skull white over the model and then wait a long time for drying (and possibly not be happy with the 'whiteness'), or you'll get impatient and gloop on some skull white right out of the pot, with predictably undesirable results.

It doesn't really take that long to guide in the wash... and then that last watered down skull white pass is fast and easy, only really focusing on the area near the purple wash.

I've heard about a fateweaver conversion and a tzeentch chariot... when will we get to see those bad boys?

The horrors look good. I really like the contrast between the deep blue and the glowing orange of the eyes. Also the way the tongues and teeth really pop.

thanks guys, just a quick update- I finished building the herald and doing the sand on the bases, hope to get some pics up this weekend and knock out some more painting!

the glowing orange eyes ended up better than I expected them to, to be honest, but I am running with that technique now ;-) if I get some time to play with it I might even try source lighting for glowing eyes.

nice work on the horrors...might i suggest adding some white to the sunburst and adding that to the eyes to make them pop/glow a bit more?

@sonofruss - many are the ears the Architect of Fate whispers into during the night - few are those of us who heed his Word.

@Antman677 - Good suggestion - I was also thinking of just doing a touch of unwashed sunburst in there, but it will depend on if I can get this first batch of models painted by the deadline :-/

Look for a big update coming at the end of the weekend.

If your looking for a pop with out getting a glassy "bling" use a light gray like fortress gray or something in place of the white.

@antman - thanks, I have to credit Shep - he was giving me some pointers on how the second flamers unit will look. We will see if I can do as well on my own without him holding my hand ;-)

@tekk - thanks again - the flamers look much better in person, but I wanted to get some pics updated. When I finish this first period of the tale of many gamers I will get some better pics- it is just with the holidays I am kind of on a time crunch to finish the last 11 models...
