I hate having to throw games or give people wins. It just feels bad to force mistakes on yourself so you dont absolutely table people. The games ive been stomped have been the best. I spent the first 2 years of playing losing all the time and never complained.

Wolf Guard Bodyguard in Terminator Armor

Ive been playing Nerdhammer for over 10 years, and I've played as and against all ends of the spectrum from total newb 10 year old kid to powergaming tourney winning TFG jerk.

once you get to the point where you start winning most/all of your games, you just need to branch out and work with your opponent to have fun, like everyone mentioned before me, vocalize your tactics and strategies to your newbie opponents, and give opinions on things that would help them a lot.

one game i played last weekend was a 2v2 game, me and a tourney partner wanted practice, we could only find random people to play against, one of which was quite green. so we told them our list and had them tailor lists against ours, and at nearly every step we vocalized our plan, and mentioned things that really helped them play a rock solid game. The dice went pretty badly against us for the most part, and in a few key moments advice given to them really made it a tough game, which we only pulled a tie from.
some veteren gamers might be offended by vocalizing your plans, in that case...

the other thing is to play a varied list. I plan on trying out an all terminator Space Wolf list, with no transports, just 40 terminators. Another list with one deathstar unit that is over 1000 points in one bucket. Another list which has 12 drop pods, all with deathwind launchers. Just go for silly things that are not inherently bad, but just different and maybe not 100% effective.

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

You need to decide which is more important, winning the game you are playing, or making people like you more. For instance when you play a sport or game with a child (yours or someone elses) you let them win, obviously beacuse you know you could beat them, but why would you? Would it make you happy to boast about "destorying that eight year old kid". Sometimes losing (not blatently throwing a game) will make for a more interesting game, don't use all your tricks and your oppentent will be happier, even make the games closer.

Twelve drop pods? Are you going to buy them all (and maybe paint them), or borrow them from others, or ... ? That's a little nutty, but could be fun depending on how the scatter dice roll. And you could end up getting really good at painting drop pods ...

Also a lot of Terminators, but then the Dark Angels have an entire company of Terminators so it's clearly not a ridiculous tactic even by canon standards! (Ah if only I could find more Deathwing Termies for myself.)

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

I got what I came for, and it mostly was flame-less, so I hope a mod would be so kind as to close this thread now before a troll really shows up.

My plans:

I'm not going to use any of my tournament builds for friendly games anymore. Up until now, I have pretty much one Ork army list that I take to every game everywhere (slight changes for different point values) and one Tau army list that I take to every game everywhere; I've gotten used to playing it, the nuances of my strategies with them, and am going to change things up a bit.

I already give tactical advice to people; at the tournament I was at yesterday I played against Necrons, Orks, and Space Wolves. I tabled the Necron player *really* hard and offered to give him some tactical advice (for example, he didn't move his monolith, so Ghazghkull ran up to it and auto-hit it until it exploded) but he felt that he's been playing Necrons far longer than I've been playing 40k so doesn't need advice from me. My second game against green tide orks; I tabled him as well, but only because he sat on the objectives and played defensively, giving up the charge to me; and in ork vs ork, that decides the game. We talked afterwards in depth about ork strategy, and he was a willing listener; I think he's going to be incredibly good as he tweaks his playing. My third game was against the regional "champion" who wins everything in the area at every tournament. He's a *very* skilled player. I've been in two tournaments since moving here and saw him in round three for both and won both times, but both times by a narrow margin; he's *really* good. I've got no advice for him.

I'm always game for tactical advice, and will continue doing so. Aside from that, there's a huge tournament coming up on the 28th that's expected to pull in about 30 folks. Hopefully I'll trounce that one, and then I think I'll take a little break from the tournaments around here and give other folks a chance to do some winning.

Thanks everyone.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
