Podcasting is one thing I would like to improve. Maybe it's a feature of the format, but I find listening to 40k radio to be really offputting. It's just... I dunno what. Chaotic, I guess. I'm liking the Youtube crews more at the moment. Miniwargaming and BeastsOfWar consistently deliver things like unboxing vids, tutorials and reviews in an informative and entertaining fashion.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

For those that are putting Helldorado in the bad column. The parent was Asmodee. They pulled the plug. Not the design team.

But since, it has been picked up by Cipher studios which makes Animae Tactics. As an English company they are moving full bore with the material to create an english book. Most likely in Q1 next year.

You can find a QA with Cipher studios on the Helldorado Forums.

Yeah, I don't do 40kradio (or "dice like thunder" either to be honest) much these days as my 40k fervour has dimmed. Similarly I have dropped Fell Calls from my list as my Hordesmachine fervour is dim too. At the moment I prefer those like the d6G and M&M which cover many systems, particularly new ones. Vidcasting is good too. But I tend to listen when I'm commuting, so MP3 is more useful than MP4, plus they are longer!

Cheers

@Aga: I still have my WM Cryx, and I'm willing to play it from time to time as a diversion from 40k or whatever else. But like GW, I have no particular emotional attachment to PP. For me, I find both companies stuff to be overly expensive, and will buy neither except on deep discount. These are companies, and they're out for money. I just don't see why people get wound up the way they do. Sorry 'bout that.

JohnHwangDD wrote:@carmachu: IMO, you misunderstand. I get great discounts on stuff, GW and otherwise, and I'm pretty happy about it. If I ordered internationally (someone can insert Maelstrom link), there would be carts and the whole nine yards along with the discount. Honestly, when I'm spending money, there's never been a problem with someone making it easy for me to do so. Funny how the free market makes this happen.

Except its not the free market at work. Its annoying as hell to be forced to cart order from malstrom or great canadian mail order instead of some very nice US retailers. For reasons that seem incredibly anit-free market.

The big difference is indeed "goodwill", which is largely attributable to preconceived notions of GW=Evil, PP=Good. IMO, much of the difference is that the fans don't listen to GW, rather than GW not listening to the fans. You see this all the time with the rants over Jervis' WD column and similar. In the mean time, GW continues to sell big numbers so clearly, their customer base is doing OK, too.

No john, just stop. There isnt "preconcieved notions" at all. Pretty much many of GW's actions or inactions have caused ill will towards them. I've been playing GW for almost 20 years, and the change is pretty stagging considering where they were.

Big numbers? Not really. Numbers from say 2001 are probably higher than that are today, if I went back and checked the public records. Higher margins? yes. Bigger volume-ie more units sold? Doubtful.

And really, I don't know why you PP guys are so touchy. The fact is that PP is charging more per model than GW, and PP fans are happy to pay it. That's not an attack on anybody. Nor is it any kind of slam against PP. It's a statement of reality that is easily verified. So there's no reason for you guys to get all upset when I point it out.

Once again your bais against PP comes to play. Here's a hint: I really dont play PP anymore, and havent for a year or two. So when you fanboys of GW start up with "touchy PP" folks, it amuses me to no end. Since its you who are the ones that are touchy.

But the emotional depth that it creates is puzzling and interesting. *Why* does me pointing this out make you so mad?

Because ultimately, your wrong. You keep going back to price over and over again. When clearly others, including myself, tell you flat out its not JUST price thats an issue with GW, or that folks like PP instead of the price. For you? It always comes back to the dollars in this thread when clearly other factors come into play, which you ignore repeatedly.

Are PP's prices as high as GW? Sure. Does PP offer alot more in terms of customer relations than GW? Sure. And there in lies the difference. PP doesnt treat its customers like idiots or take them for granted. GW does it repeatedly.

Hope more old fools come to their senses and start giving you their money instead of those Union Jack Blood suckers...

FYI, Fell Calls has ended at episode 200. The same guys are doing THACO now, which is a general roleplaying/geek culture podcast and is very funny to listen to, particularly because of their "friendly" banter. http://www.thacopodcast.com/

Another good thing nobody's brought up yet is the resin guys. MaxMini, Microart Studio, Chapterhouse. All great products, all year long. I think at least MAS has been going at it for a while, but it seems to me 2009 is the year they've moved up into the limelights. To me of a particular note is MAS's expanding Discworld line, amazing sculpts there.

That's all for this part of the recap, and now for some light comedy entertainment. Cue Yakkety Sax.

Oh Oh, we got a mention

I am excited about the possibility we may become a known name for bits and stuff (we are still rather young and getting off the ground and used to the business).

Lol, did you frequently visit the Privateer forums in the months after they first released the field test?

There was so much complaining on there about Warmachine being made completely bland and flavorless that it dwarfs all the latest C&D whining by the local group of GW haters here on Dakka.

As far as I am concerned Privateer did more bad than they did good in 2009.

Good: field test (a necessary move also, but still a good one), move to plastic (those warjack boxes will be great), posting free rules on their website.

Bad: Retribution (So much potential, so much fail. I hate the unoriginal rules, all the penis shaped stuff and most of the sculpts), price increases, overall sculpting (hopefully 2010 will be the year they improve their sculpting, because 2009 sure was not it), quality control (they have never had so many miscasts, mispacks, issues such as too many toes or fingers on species that should not have them according to Privateer universe anatomy, and last but definitely not least: SCALE ISSUES)

And still getting only 5 different sculpts in a 10 man plastic unit sucks monkey balls.

Still undecided: MK2

Let us not pretend they did not make a lot of miniatures "useless" by "balancing" their rules. People who bought a lot of Legends models because of their rules certainly were not happy.

Did they turn their game into something bland, generic and flavourless? I honestly can not say right now, but a lot of the models' rules sure do not feel as unique as they did before.

Oh and I am reading comments on the Hordes field test in their Trollblood forum right now too (since that is my main faction), and it doesn not look pretty. More on this later in the Privateer forum probably.

As noted above, I don't read the PP forums. Sorry for glossing it over. I got a better impression of MK.2 from what I saw on Dakka. Sorry, again.

I have to agree with poor quality control on PP sculpts at times. Sure, Mulg is pure awesome, and I will be getting one to paint this christmas. But did you see the ridiculous hands on the trollblood runeshaper dudes? The trollbloods suffer from waaaay too much variance in morphology which makes no sense given the background.

I don't mind the new rules much, it looks to me like they tried to make everything more useful and the game more streamlined. I'm down with that. I do buy less PP stuff though because it's so pricey, but I get use out of every single thing I buy so it sorta balances out?

Maybe it's just the first time I've noticed it, but the small model studios like Trollforged and stuff are putting out fantastic miniatures. I'm really tempted by Gamezone too, and Ultraforge.

And I can only agree with NAVARRO on the whole Helldorado thing. That game has so much potential that was completely missed out on by Asmodée. I mean, why release the rules in SPANISH (no offence) before releasing them in english? It maketh no sense to me, and I think they lost out on a lot of people with that decision.

+1

I was ready to drop serious cash on this game as the models and game concept was dead sexy.

Then they curb stomped my desire to support them by basically saying "F U america you can suck it" when pressed about an English rulebook.

Ok, no problem, I'll keep giving Privateer my money...

Well from first hand experience with two of those three I'm giving my full support to Chapter house
