My dream game is a 10mm mass-battle Star Wars game, entirely pre-painted.

Imagine a dozen AT-ATs on a 4' x 6' snow board in a game room, surrounded by rectangular bases of play-out-of-the box Snowtroopers and AT-ST's. Droooool

Without building/conversion/painting i'd have no interest in this hobby Might as well play computer games.

The problem is you're confusing a game with a hobby. Star Wars Miniatures is just a game, that's all. You can convert and paint but in the end it's just a game.

However there are a lot of people who make custom maps (like people involved in warhammer make terrain).

It's pretty cool actually, I used to play the game before I got into warhams.

I've got a crapton (OK like 12) of those really useless rebel troopers from the first 5 minutes of Star Wars.

I love them. So brave, so futile.

"Hey you, stand here and shoot Darth #$%^ing Vader with your flashlight."

Also got a bunch of the Crimson Guard, also useless but so cool.

Now the Shadow Guard...

They are useful and cool looking.

Or, rather, he's confusing the hobby of wargaming (which doesn't always even include miniatures, let alone unpainted ones that you need to build yourself) with the hobby of model building. As much as GW would like to convince everybody that they're part of the same uber-hobby, they're really not.

Don't get me wrong, I love converting and painting models. But I also like playing games... and I see that as two hobbies, not one.

There is no rule that says that a wargame has to have pieces that you must assemble and paint yourself. And if a given game comes with prepainted models, then that means it's all that much easier to start playing. And if I feel an urge to repaint the miniatures later on, well, there's nothing stopping me from doing so.

I like this last post... GW "THE" hobby seems to be the Grial

I have several armies of these things.

I played the game for a couple of years, but began to dislike it as the rules became more fiddly. New rules began to make it feel like the system was beginning to bend under its own weight.

I now play a homebrew game where I can have well over a hundred or more miniatures on each side. The rules borrow heavily from AT-43 and several other game systems that had rules I could plunder. It's fairly simple, possibly simplistic, but seeing massed ranks of stormtroopers marching forward, while a trio of repulsor sleds fly towards the objective, and the scout trooper sniper takes shots from a tower at rebellious wookiees can excuse the occasional wonky rule.

I have largely fallen out of love with painting, mainly due to lack of time, but touching of up a paint-jobs is fine by me, and some of the sculpts can be quite nice. I convert many of the more common troopers to add more variety to my squads, and almost all character models have had their faces repainted. I also like their more realistic proportions, to the point where GW miniatures have begun to look ugly to me by comparison.

Also, I'd urge people to check out the "Deceived" trailer for the MMO "The Old Republic" at www.swtor.com - it will make you want to stage your own Jedi/ Sith battle.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

I'm playing this a lot at the moment, mainly with a really chopped down rules version (I ignore most of the special powers or advanced rules) so my 6yr and 4yr old can join in.

They love the game and I've been picking up various boosters through the shops trade account, including some 'Universe' over the past few months where I got a AT ST and various other nice large figs.

Its a great little game, and I plan on adding to it over the next year to try and get more of the 'original trilogy' era as most of our stuff with any numbers to them are Clone Wars based. (Although to be fair the boys are quite happy about that. )

Think we have about 100figs total so far though.

I'd recommend it to anybody.

The Shadow Guard are awesome, I have one I think.

I remember that my army for 100 points was Darth Vader, Champion of the Sith and 10x Stormtroopers. It was actually pretty good.

Of course then I got the Darth Vader that gave all the stormtroopers +6 Defense and then I just used him.

By the way, if anyone is looking to sell any Star Wars minis, please contact me! : )

I've played this game. Homegrown rules using PotF AT-ATs vs Action Fleet Snowspeeders.

Empire at War was ok. I enjoyed playing it through.

I'm one of those rare people who really liked Star Wars: Rebellion, so Empire at War was sort of an update for that, just with more RTS elements and a hugely superior fleet combat mechanic.

The expansion I've yet to play.

By this time next week I'll be able to refight the battle of Hoth.

But it's not a problem. I can stop any time.

Really I can.
