40k is ABOUT the space marines.
always has been, always will be.
and if it wasnt for space marines (and their sales), nobody would be playing 40k OR fantasy right now.
its like complaining that indiana jones movies have too much indiana jones in them.

Genius idea... Except you overlooked the most basic and obvious problem with that. So, it's gameshow time, so that I can point out the flaw with relevant comedy, as usual!
For $1000, Making the SMs cheaper is going to:
A) Make more people play Marines?
B) Make more people play Marines?
C) Influence more people to play Space Marines?
D) Kitty!

Well.. in my case, i wouldn't be playing 40k if i hadn't like Space Marines in Space Crusade. And they're, as said earlier, the spirit of 40K. Only race i think ruins the game is the Dark Eldar. And that is only because the DE players i play with do nothing else than complain how much GW "loves" SM and DE gets no support 'cause they're not mainstream.

People like to hate the big guys.
I hate the Yankees.
People hate Microsoft.
I could mention a ton of huge groups that people hate for really no valid reason except that its cool to hate the big guy.
I cant tell you how many people in my group hate space marines. "I would have killed you if your guys didnt have a 2+ armor save" or "You wouldnt be so tough if you didnt have a 14 all around tank". Yea well Tau would be easy to deal with if they did'nt have that move, shoot, move back in assault thing, and daemons didnt have all invurn saves.
Its a game that you play to have fun with, but challenges you to overcome your weakness and the other armies strengths.
But I will admit, Space Marines do get a lot of attention in terms of updates and the expanded media.

Do you think it might have something to do with the fact that the DE players have to use a codex that's 11 years old, and 2 editions late for an update, as well as a range of minis that look like utter rubbish?
Pretty sure if roles were reversed, you'd be just as peeved about SMs being neglected while DE got all the affection.

Which is why I phrased it as a hypothetical scenario. But that's exactly my point. So I would say they have good reason to complain, and you can't really talk down about them for it, because those of us that play armies GW actually cares about don't have to deal with that level of frustration.

Thats a good reason to complain, i agree. But it's not good enough reason to complain all the time.
I know there's DE players out there that doesn't do that, but i haven't met one yet.

I object to the commonality of it.
If only they could be rated like a belt system in Martial Arts.
It's only as you get better at playing the game do you get to use marines.
Marines are supposed to be the elite! not the bloody default!

The only thing wrong with that would be the following scene:
*10 year old plops a bunch of Marine stuff on the cashier's counter under the not-so-watchful eye of mommy, who really has no wish to be in a hobby shop full of teenagers.*
Redshirt: "I just need to see your Space-Level before I can approve this purchase."
10 year old: "Huh?"
Redshirt: "...You don't have a Space-Level... Do you?"
10 year old: "...No..."
Redshirt: "HOW DARE YOU TRY TO BUY THE EMPRAH'S ASTARTEHS WITHOUT A SUFFICIENT SPEHSS-LEVEL!!"
*Redshirt hops the counter and kicks 10 year old in the face, then picks up the Space Marine stuff and proceeds to set it back on the shelf, while mumbling "Shhh, it's okay. You're safe now." to each box in turn.*
*Observant mom tells child to stop making a scene and pulls him out of the store, oblivious to what just happened*

You don't agree Space Marines are the focal point of 40K?
* Space Hulk: Space Marines vs Aliens
* Dawn of War: Campaign is from Space Marine POV
* Space Marines have Codexes for different chapters
* Space Marines have more models than any other army
* Guess who is on the cover of the 40K rulebook?

Space Marines are the heart of the game.
Without them, the savior of mankind, there would be no 40k
and 40k would be less fun to play.

Space marines ARE 40K.
Saying 40K would be better without them is like saying 300 would be better without any Spartans in it...
Or Star Wars without Jedi...
Or My little Pony without the unicorns...
I'm just sayin...

They are a bit comparable to the 300 Spartans fighting against the huge persian army.

Hi all.
No singular faction can ruin a game.Only the mis-development of a game can ruin it.
IF marketing is put in front of game play , then the game will suffer proportionatly.
The way the SM are over exposed and over publicised HAS had a negative effect on the game of 40k.
Most games use the 'bog standard human grunt' as the base line for comparison.
Making the SMs the most common army in 40k has skewed the balance in the game , so that the 'elite superhuman' is used for comparison.
And the game appears to be polarising around limited builds as a result.
Not to mention some factions being left behind, and it is NOT good when army composition and rules for factions have gaps of up to 10 years.
ALL factions should be brought up to the current edition of the rules before releaseing a new edition (IMO.)

Personally, I like that the game is based on the MEQ staline. I think it adds to the feeling of a grim, hostile universe where the only way for humanity to survive is with a horribly oppresive totalitarian government united by a common fanaticism. The fact that humans are the weakest race in the game really helps push that sense. My only beef with SM's is that there are three SM codeci that could really be rolled into the primary 'dex, making it easier to update the system.
