I wouldn't. I have no problem not going to any more Batman films, as policy I didn't go to any of the ones since the Tim Burton films.
Cheney would make a better Penguin.

What?!?
The pinnacle was Mark Hamill in Batman: The Animated Series. Regardless of how much Ledger is loved as the Joker, he was actually downhill. Well, okay, maybe not downhill, per se but as interesting as Nolan/Ledger's interpretation was, he definitely lacked some of Joker's over the top zaniness. Mark Hamill on the other hand? Perfect! Especially in Arkham Asylum! Too bad the guy is not the right build.

TBH I didn't care for the last batman film. Mainly due to the Ledger joker. I know that's heresy, but I just didn't like the psycho joker. I prefer the "joking" joker ala Nicholson.
I would love to see Jim Carey try it. Although highly doubtfull since he allready played riddler.

I personally loved ledger as the joker, more because of the insanity he brought to a role that has always been so barely off the cusp of reality if you will. When I watch it I don't see a dead man I see a genius because he took joker to a new level that only a few could fill, BUT if somone were too I would say Johny Depp!

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

I liked both versions actually. The current joker is Charles Manson as the Joker where Nicholson played a slightly crazy but generally just off the wall mob guy. Both were appropirate for the types of movies being done.

I loved Ledger as The Joker - It just seemed more 'real-world' (which is ridiculous I know - this Batman we're talking about!) and was genuinely unsettling.
Brad Pitt was awesome in Twelve Monkeys, but he's too old now, I reckon.
@Scragglefoot - I would LOVE to see Dylan Moran in more films - he's a terrific actor. He'd be an awesome movie villain - kind of like Alan Rickman. Not sure the yanks could stomach an Irish baddie though .

I like Dylan Moran! I think you may be on to something! Hell, his part in Shaun of the Dead shows that he can do a subtle crazy boiling under the surface. How about full blown though?
As far as Irish playing baddies; Both Baron Harkonnens were played by Irish (or Irish American in one case) Actors.

I hear ya. The Nolan films postulate "Bat Man as real life." The Burton films were "Batman as dark comic book."

No one could really replace Heath's Joker but imo the next best bet would be to go for an unknown lookalike. Heath Ledger already did the hard part of setting a new laugh, demeanor, etc. for the modern Joker and the next guy just needs to act like that. However give Joker a relatively minor role in the next movie if given one at all.

That worked really well for Superman Returns. No thanks. Brandon Routh wasn't bad but he was TOO similar to Reeves (no fault of his own and the weak plot didn't help).
A new interpretation. Any actor should make the role his own, like Ledger did.

That is funny you say that as I felt Jim Carrey was imitating the 60's Frank Gorshin/Riddler (as Kilmer was imitating 60's Adam West/Batman) in that film. Now, as much as I am NOT a Jim Carrey fan, I actually feel like he could be a good Joker if he tries to keep the character darker and is clear of any Disney-esque style of directing/acting, I think he may find a good balance of Ledger and Cesar Romero. While his outward persona was Chaotic, Joker was usually pretty Machiavellian. It was the range of his plots that varied greatly. Sometimes city threatening, sometimes only threatening to one person ( Killing Joke is a good example of this).

Be kind of cool if it was the city of Gotham vs. Batman. At the end of the 2nd movie he was supposedly wanted. Lets have a bad mayor, or better yet, a good mayor, really go after him with power. Or inverssely lets have batman go over the edge. The reality is that Batman is a psychotic vigilante.

Yea that whole movie felt like a throwback to the Adam West Batman series.
If they do go with having Joker in the next film imo I'd still rather have an evolution of Heath's take than something completely new; but thats just me and a bias towards continuity. However as long as Nolan is on the project it'll be a hit no matter what

I doubt we see the Joker again soon. The general theme for Batman movies is a new "main" villian (or three) every movie.
I bet we see a new Penguin or Catwoman before we see the Joker again.

Well played, Sir. You have caused me to think hard regarding the "No Joker for awhile" stance. Automatically Appended Next Post: How about (as mentioned by Frazz) a righteous Mayor that goes after Bats with the full force of the Law (despite Gordon, of course) while he (Bats) is investigating rumors of Joker's apparent death which leads him into a battle of wits with the Riddler (similar to B: AS Riddler).
What compounds Bats' challenge in all of this is he is also tap-dancing around an investigation which centers around Wayne being Bats because, let's be honest, he would be near the top of a very short list. Maybe Gordon stumbles across the newly re-constructed (but not entirely finished) Wayne Manor/Bat-Cave and is implicated in hiding its origins. Or better yet, Gordon deduces Wayne is Batman and lets slip near the end of the film to help keep Bats on his toes. Maybe have the Riddler actually get away in the end despite his overall plot being foiled.
Okay, I was brainstorming a little.

A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. I remember Nolan talking about how the Joker would play a big part in the next two films (this was before Dark Knight was released). The fallout from Dark Knight would carry over into the third somehow and not just pretend that it never happened and bring on a new baddie. I don't think he was going to be in the spotlight but his presence was still there. Maybe see him in Arkham or something like that. There was supposed to be continuity. Ledger's death has probably gummed up those works quite a bit, which is one reason it will be awhile until we have the next one.

The advantage of featuring the Joker though is that they can easily justify even taking a totally different approach, due to his fractured "super sane" mindset and the way he constantly reinvents himself each and every day or with every defeat.
Arkham Asylum writer Grant Morrison recently read Heath Ledger's Joker diary and commented how much of it contained notes directly from his take on the Joker. The diary contained a list of things that would make the Joker laugh: blind babies, AIDS, seriously injured doctors, geniuses with brain damage, landmines, brunch and sombreros.
As a response to his own “Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth,” Morrison had continued his themes of the duality of Joker and the Batman in “The Clown at Midnight.” Having established with “Arkham” that the Joker had a sort of “super-sanity” and that he shifted between personalities,” Morrison explored the idea further in “The Clown at Midnight,” by showing that each time the Joker escaped, one of those new personalities would emerge.
Morrison says no one read these issues, Heath Ledger did and copied salient character points into his diary.

Im sure i read some where that two face was going to be created at the end of Dark Knight then be the main villian in the third film but with Ledgers death they made him more of a cameo villian to show more of ledgers preformance which is a shame cause i liked two face shame they killed him off!

Have you seen Black Books the TV Series he did with Bill Bailey he is pretty mental in that also his stand up shows him as a angry man usally think they would be a good way for joker to progress as his plans have been ruined by batman he is more bitter.
I also think jim Carry would make a good Joker did you see Number 23? it was a terrrible film but really showed his ability to play a pysco!
