Cats. Most dogs I've met seem to behave like an escaped mental patient in a dog's body. Sweeping generalization, I know. Cats are way less maintenance and they are awesome at killing mice, big cockroaches, frogs and big spiders that can sneak into your house in this part of the world. Also, I've never seen a Cat eat its own feces, or another cats feces, just because it was hungry. Dogs on the other hand....

How does a bird show affection?

Thats the kind of bird that i was talking about earlier.
I was almost convinced to get one ( its like $45 in pet store) and easier to maintain than dogs i think.
But upon hearing they cant be potty trained i give up -_-

Parrots need a lot of attention to keep from getting mean. At least as much as dogs or more in some cases.

I would probably have a dog if I had the space. I am extremely allergic to cats... even though I had nothing but cats for most of my life.
That said, I really prefer mudkips, they dun' ask fer nuthin'!

Cats.
My long departed little black cat Siouxsie was my pride and joy. As to not being affectionate, she was a very loving cat and more so than dogs, she knew when I was down or pissed about things and would quietly come over and sit next to me. Broke my heart taking her to the vets when she was old and blind and her liver failing. Still miss her.

You can show a cat who is boss quite ethically, you just do everything on your timing and expect the cat to cope. I am happy to have a pet cat, but will never fully pamper one, this way the pet ownership doesn't becomes a master-slave issue. I dont expect much from cats but I believe in handling them often from a young age and at a time of your choosing, if cat doesn't want a cuddle the answer is not comp-laint or claws, no thats not acceptable. If it doesnt want a cuddletime it wants to be outside. Inside is human space, with allowances for cats. I also vary meal times slightly so it is the cat not the human who has to wait. Its psychological, very quickly a cat learns you are not to be exploited and respects you. I think I get more respect from my cats than pamperers do.
With this done cats are acceptable, give a cat an inch and he will take a mile. Warm a cats milk because its cold out that day and he expects warm milk every day. My cats get cold milk, as and when I decide, so by now if I warm the milk or give fresh fish for dinner its a treart and the cat has no expectation for the treatment to be continued.
You will be suprised how amenable cats can be. They get a warm home, they get adequately fed, they know that its safe to be with me, they are not expected to do anything in return except be civil, go outside toilet, and purr when fussed.
The trouble is many people don't know how to own cats, cats detect this, exploit this easily and the exploitation becomes part of the cats nature as it grows up.
With dogs there are fewer core self issues to consider, dogs are faithful so I am fully faithful to the dog without a concern of any change in the pack order. Saying this again some people pamper dogs, particularly the little handbag dogs, to the extent they act like cats. This is its own punishment.

Thats nothing. The new wiener dog took out a rattlesnake at his previous residence. My old dog stopped a rottweiler from attacking me, cold. We had a doberman that made sure the house was safe from any evil frozen chickens lurking about...

Dogs go crazy because often the specific breed has genetically been bred for centuries to do work. When they are locked in a house = equivalent of human been asked to stay in bath tub all day o_o
Also when dog eats its own poo = it has nutrient deficiency , like how they also instinctively eat grass.

Any animal can not be needy if people actually treat their animals like animals, not people. The only reason your dog want human food is because you're handing it to him. You could slip him a milkbone while sitting at the dinner table and get the same response. Cats are a bit more stubborn when not trained properly, so I voted dog. I'm a bunny person though. Nothing beats an adorable bunny who hops over to meet you after a hard day of work and cuddles up with you at night
More random: my Betta fish plays hide and seek and turns to me whenever I call him. My life is sort of like a twisted Disney cartoon.
