Splinter empires can live in their lovely little edonic paradises for a few decades, or even centuries, untill a space hulk full of orks drifts by, or some alien (or the imperium) decides that you have something they want. Then you're dead. Period.
Serve the chaos and you have to choose between;
1) A life of constant stress and struggle, with all of your "friends" looking for an excuse to kill you all the time...
2)Constantly growing "fun" new appendages and developing strange (amd usually useless) new powers and appendages untill your sanity's broken and all your "friends" have screwed with you so many times that are incapable of trust.
3)Wake up one day wearing gender inappropriate clothing, whipping some poor dude while taking it up the @$$ from a rabid bull just to experiance something new.
4)Recieve syphilis for your birth day from a god who loves you. Actually granpa Nurgle's not so bad since he at least alleviates your ability to feel pain. So long as you don't mind infecting everything around you and looking like bag rotten of @$$holes.
Serving the Empereror may not be a cake walk. Actually, the Empereror's pretty much, "take, take, take, and when you've nothing left, it's 'cause you're dead", he at least offers you a chance to be part of the "life feeds on life" aspect of the universe, and you get to be a tooth (better than being part of the rump, ie; hive worker).
The few who have joined the Tau do fairly well, as long as you don't mind being a lesser slave race, no different from some funny looking cannibalistic snake men (kroot) and over-grown mosquitos (vespids). At least they give you guns. You'll never be in charge of anything. Nor will your children. Or their children, but whatever...
They will at least keep ya' alive though, as long as you die to keep you alien masters.
Not a hard choice really. You are a slave. And that's that. You have no choice to "be free". You are a born servant and will die a servant. Welcome to the future. XD

Ordinarily I would simply BLAM! a heretic like this, but first I'll attempt to show him the truth and the light before his summary execution.
What lies have we spoken? Do we lie when we brand your methods and motives evil? No.
Do we lie when we warn the Imperium of the grave threat the mutant, the xenos and the heretic pose to us? No.
Do we lie when we praise the works and deeds of the Emperor? No.
Do we lie when we say that the Imperium is humanities only chance against this wave of filth that assails us? No.

The Imperium is not pure. Not by a long shot. Not while heretics and traitors such as yourself corrupt and infest it.

Point missed, as usual. The faithful Chaos cultists in that novel are rewarded for their loyalty not with freedom and esteem by their Word Bearer masters. Nope, they're used as meat shields, slaves, hosts, mortar, etc. If you so much as look at the Word Bearers, you get shot in the face. The life of a Chaos cultists, even relative to life as a loyal Imperial citizen, is absolutely miserable.

Welcome to Chaos.
I am just joking around as usually, but you also have to understand that that is just one Legion. Not all Legions work the same, but yes, in general, a culstists life does suck. But not more than any Imperial citizen.

You're joking, right?
I believe someone here had a good quote regarding why worshipping Chaos is...well, stupid.
With the extremely, extremely rare exception of those favored enough to become Daemon Princes or slightly lower entities, cultists are basically butt-fodder for the Chaos Powers, their inevitable fate having their souls consumed.

Agree w/ R-S. Being a CSM could be fun, I suppose, being anything less than that would suck EVEN compared to serving in the local PDF. I'd agree with the earlier sentiments in this thread. Best bet for your average human is to join up with the IG.

PDF could be better. Sure, they're in a worse position than guardsman if their planet gets invaded, but the probability of your planet getting invaded is lower than you dying when the IG inevitably ships you off to some warzone.

A long life is not what I'd be after, no no. Just the chance to die in the service of the Emperor. Of course, my first choice would be to join the Astropathic Choir of Terra.

Hate to break it to you, Manchu, but the Astropathic Choir isn't a bunch of people singing like this:
It's more like a bunch of these all screaming at the same time.

No. In fact I admire your sacrifice. Indeed, I fear that I would be too weak to undergo such an ordeal. Comparably, rooting out and destroying heretics is easy to this task. I was merely worried that you were unsure as to what you were getting into.

Au contraire, my fellow pilgrim. Being consumed in the Astronomicon is much easier than hunting heretics and daemons through the Void. Being drawn into the mind of the Emperor, however painfully, means benefiting from the protection of His might against the fury of the Warp. That's why I'd prefer it--proximity to Him for the safety of my soul.

Chaos is the only power that makes sense to worship because:
1) The Chaos Gods will actually give you something for your worship (like daemonic immortality! worth a little risk? i think so.)
and
2) Chaos is going to win in the end no matter what, so there really is no point in fighting it. The Emperor will die, the universe will become Chaos, and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it, only delay it. Ya'll have your fun while it lasts, I'm in it for the long haul.

When a Chosen psyker is immolated into the Astronomicon, her or his soul is caught up into the pure light of the Emperor's perfected mind and cast across the near breadth of the galaxy to guide His armies as they ensure the dominance of Man.
When a Chaos cultist dies (just as likely at the hands of a fellow cultists or CSM as an imperial), her or his soul is torn to shreds by the countless, nameless Warp-things that will rape it into final nonexistence.

Alright fair enough, but like I said, I'm no cultist, no servant of a Chaos Lord, no I'm my own master and follow no one's instructions...I'm neither Chaos nor Imperial....
