I think the best part of this whole thing is this interview with McElderry about the incident. He is quite an idiot it would seem, and funny at the same time.
Apparently his song is a cover of a Miley Cirus song. The industry must be in real if they have to cover songs this recent and by musicians that make the Monkees look like Led Zepplin, both in integrity and musical talent.

I'm glad RaTM won.
It's nice to see someone other than a manufactured pop star win for the first time in ages.

I didn't know what "the X factor" was until reading this thread. Now I know that it's "a UK television program of Simon Cowel", although I don't know who he is either.
Does this mean I've beaten them?

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it. |

I think it's great that the campaign won out over the bland rubbish these reality shows keep peddling.
And here's the really good bit from Shelter UK's website:
"After a huge grassroots social networking campaign on Facebook and Twitter, Rage Against the Machine has reached number one for Christmas - raising over £80,000 for Shelter in the process. Congratulations and a massive thank you to everyone involved!
Rage Against the Machine have now said they will also donate a large portion of their royalties from the track to Shelter. Many, many thanks to them, and to all who have donated via the campaign. "
Nuff said, homeless people will be provided for this Christmas due to this record's sales and those who bought it.
Well done.

@ MGS - True, but £80,000 raised from 500,000 in sales? That's not a lot considering half a million people bought it.
Anyway...
This just in - Simon Cowell has killed himself after ONLY selling around half a million copies of a debut single by a completely unknown artist that cost a relative pittance in terms of artist development, the costs of which were recouped before the single hit the shelves. Popular mainstream musical entertainment show X-Factor, which regularly pulls in viewing figures of around 10 million, has been cancelled with immediate effect.
Oh hang on....none of that happened.
Well done RATM fans, keep smashing the system with consumerism - it's the last thing the fat-cats will expect.
Pop has always been 'manufactured' - anyone who thinks otherwise has too little knowledge of musical history to comment, sorry. See Motown for a classic example.

Your cynical gland is in overdrive...
Besides, if the download costs 40pence and 500,000 were sold, that means £200,000...of which £80,000 is 40% of the total profit, not too shabby.
If RATM also are to donate a sizable amount of their royalties from the track, then even better. Whilst £80,000 isn't going to end homelessness in the UK, it will certainly help some folks who need it during this cold and inclement time.
If you wish to continue looking for the turd in this trifle, carry on mate, I'm fairly pleased myself and it's cheered up my day.

Yeah see my earlier post. Whilst i do loathe the whole idea of pop idol, i cant help but think the whole thing as just a ridiculous waste of time.
The X-factor single wouldnt have sold half as many as it did if it wasnt in a contest with RATM.
The only ones who are laughing their asses off here are Sony music. Whilst all the sweaty little goths who think they are being all "anti establishment" empty their pockets into record executives arse pockets.
It is literally that simple.

Don't get me wrong - it's good that money went to charity, of course. Plus RATM are planning a free gig for next year to say thank-you, which is cool. I guess I'm just wondering why people didn't just give the money directly to charity, instead of buying a single by a rap-rock band to prove some sort of naive point. I know people who bought multiple copies. Sad bastards!

I think people were buying the single to see off the x-factor tripe, it just so happens that RATM have quite the social consience. I'm pleased Rage will do a free gig, I'm pleased that they donated to a worthwhile cause and I'm glad that through application of action that things can be achieved (even if it is just the toppling of an x-factor muppet)

Actually it's sold less, last year Alexandra Burke sold 596'000 copies of her track.

How was buying RaTM's song supposed to lower sales of another single?
It was to break X Factor's streak and deny Simon Cowell another Christmas no. 1, and it worked.

Erm, I didn't say it was supposed to lower sales of anything. I am aware of the intention behind the campaign - I just regard it as pointless and juvenile.
