I don't see a lot of posts anywhere on Dakka where people are posting their age... So, not sure where you're getting your data from...

I seriously doubt it.
We'll have to work out the terms of this bet though.
If you're right, er, I don't know, we'll think of something.
If you're wrong, you're banished forever?

And once again another misquotation [quote=Standard Bearer Article In Question I also love that ours is a social, face-to-face hobby where you move armies of miniatures rather imprecisely over the modelleed terrain on your wargames table, rolling big handfuls of dice to resolve combat, groaning when they come up 1s and cheering if they come up 6s! Online interaction is OK as a get you by, but our hobby is rooted in real-life games against real-life people, wth all the give-and-take and interaction that entails. Internet forums and online games just don't seem to teach quite the same set of social skills, if you know what I mean.
As I said earlier, the whole article is explaining what he feels the appeal of the Hobby to be, namely it's tangible nature, and the fact that unlike many modern pastimes, it does involve quite a bit of effort and commitment from it's participants. People really are getting their knickers in a twist over nothing. For example, couple of paragraphs down, he concludes thusly... Standard Bearer wrote:For all these reasons I'd say that changing the hobby in order to make it 'easier to get into' would simply turn it into another 21st Century Pastime and a rather inferior one at that. Lets face it, if all you want is an easy going pastim, which calls for very little commitment and effort on your part, then there are lots of better ways to spend you time than playing Warhammer, 40k or LOTR. Or to put it another way, it's precisely because they call for commitment and effort that they are still popular today. But hey, keep on reading in hope of being offended.

I've read the article twice, because I read it once and wasn't sure if there was anything to be offended at. I think I have picked up on the tendency to Jervis-bash here, and assumed there would be.
In fact, my interpretation of the article is summarised as; "Real-life interaction is great, although online interaction is kinda okay in the absence of real-life. Real-life interaction teaches more social skills, whereas the internet tends to allow rudeness and hyperbole. Our hobby is good, because it encourages real-life interaction rather than just online interaction. We should try to keep it that way."
I actually agree with his sentiments. Let's be honest, there are plenty of dicks in real life who play this game, but at least they have to try to fit in, or they run out of places to go. On the internet, it is well known, even amongst ourselves that there is a lot or immaturity and rudeness out there.
My issues with Jervis are two;
* He is not as important as people think he is. He is a figurehead, that is all.
* His writing style is awful. He takes 20 words to say what can be said in five. That is a failing I share. In the first draft of what I write. Here on a forum I tend to leave my posts waffley, and I know that, but when writing a professional report/letter/etc, I edit for style and content. I don't think Jervis knows how.

after reading this stadard bearer, what do you think?
is he right?
or a LOON!?
either way thers a implied Dig at internet forums like Dakka intended or otherwise.
this was the origional post. it askes a question. then people asked for more info, and its my fault for not being more informative. then the bashing started. so ive ben branded a whiner, fine, cool i can live with it, i know im anti GW and if you cant handle that there is this neat lil button its called ignore, use it. please gawd use it, cause my personal take on GW and its practices is MY opinion, attacking me personally for my view rather than simply answering the origional question is just stupid, but as they say, stupid is as stupid does.
apoligies to MDG for any offense.
so MODS just lock the thread, only a few have given an informed opinion and to them im greatful to all others that just flamed, bickerd and pro or anti wined against or for JJ it wasnt apretianted, and wasnt what i was after. shame on alot you for caring on like a bunch of monkeys at the zoo having a crap fight.
Like i said. lock the thread i'll know better than to ask for opinions on WD as the mag obviously isnt fallowed on dakka as much as i had assumed.

No, you asked a question, then followed up with a statement of fact which was inaccurate.
Simply put, there is no implied slight or snook cocked at the Interwebs. At all. Indeed, where he mentions the Web, it's praised as being beneficial to a Hobbyist.
And you didn't quantify your question as to whether he is a loon or correct. Two possible answers were given, but no question was asked. And when someone posts up the relevant parts of the article, you say they are full of crap. Top posting there.
