But yes, I have seen a picture of what our neighborhood, heck, what the CITY looked like a mere 25 years ago and the difference is startling. Dubai alone attracts more tourism than the entirety of India now.

Oil prices following the 2nd Gulf War (Desert Storm). Since their supply is expected to dry up within 15-25 years the large construction projects were intended to redefine Dubai as a kind of Middle Eastern Hong Kong, with a larger emphasis on tourism.

Definitely not as epic as the first Hive city of Terra but looks pretty nifty even though it resembles a drill bit.

The real purpose of that building is to drill an easy route to China, straight through the Earth with a small diversion to avoid the giant magma centre.

The real reason for the snipers is that if someone were to, say, fire off a blast just right, that monster would come down across billions of dollars of real estate, making hundreds of millionaires very dead.

Actually, it's probably more for truck bombs. Here's the thing, the US got very lucky on 9/11. WTC, to a degree, fell straight down. Imagine, for a moment, if they had fallen across downtown Manhattan, sideways. Now imagine that even bigger, across even more expensive real estate. If (somehow) one were to get a big enough explosive to the right point at the base of the tower, well... as they say, TIMBBBBBIIIIIIIRRR!

Terrorists in general. It's a giant building in a Middle Eastern country with an interest in Westernizing. Seems like prudence to me.
