He was good in The Ice Storm. I liked him as Pete, though I can concede that he wasn't perfect for the role.

I hear he's good in Brothers, too. Need to see that one.

That doesn't even make sense.

Maguire didn't even play that many memorable characters before Spider Man. I only really remember him from cider house rules and the horse movie.

Neither did Vin Diesel. Does that mean that no one else could have played Riddick better in Pitch Black because of that?

Exactly. It doesn't necessarily matter if a character really is everything he believes himself to be. Exceptionally overt confidence tends to be grating in all cases.

Isn't that a good portrayal of Reed Richards though? He's not a character that is beloved by all, many, including his own family, think he's a stuffy arrogant jackass at times. As for the portrayal of parkers intelligence, he was a very smart kid, but that amounted to a page exposition on how he can make web shooters and then he went and punched people for the next 30 years of comic history. He's a fist backed up by an underused intellect giving what in theory amounts to character depth. I don't think it's particularly poorly handled in the Raimi films, it's hard to overlay subtle contexts of civilian intelligence in a movie which is largely punchfights without making a character overtly expositorily intelligent or simply arrogant.

Spider-man as a franchise can carry itself and doesn't need known names slapped on to attempt to sell it.

It that was why they cast Maquire for the role someone really really screwed that one up.

Well, he did play highschool kid* to good effect in 21 Jump Street.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I watched that when it was on TV.

I'll admit to not being overly familiar with the Fantastic Four comics (I'm a DC guy...) so you may be right, but "stuffy arrogant jackass" doesn't work for a character that the audience is supposed to partially identify with. Ironically, the hyper-cocky Human Torch seemed much more believable and somewhat less arrogant than RICHARDS!!! because his cockiness made sense in context and it was something of an arc for the character. Reeds arc is flat. He's the stuffy genius boss at the start and the end, he's just dull in the movie.

I'll admit to liking both FF movies. I would agree with your assessment of the Richards character in that he could have been so much cooler if they had not try to make him into a fuddy duddy.

They totally botched Jessica Alba in part 2 with the weird blue eyes and unattural blonde hair. She looked a bit freakish in prt 2.
