I don't know the circumstances of the OP but I've had a similar experience once in the US but different reasons.

One day a friend and I were to meet at GW Glen Burnie. The newly opened Battle Bunker was closed so he met me at the store as there was an available table. We got there and I pulled out my army and he his. We then setup and got through the first turn. Having a nice time and then...

The little store manager (I assume he was as the other employees were cowering during this) came up to me and told me that "We don't accept miniatures to be played on our store tables without being FINISHED. YOU CAN'T PLAY HERE BUT I'LL LET IT PASS THIS TIME IF YOU UNDERSTAND YOU &^$%#!!! ? DO YOU GET IT?"

You see my Dark Eldar weren't FLOCKED. That's right they were fully painted, including the base. But I hadn't flocked them. And he was seriously yelling at me that he was going to throw me out of the store.

I counted to 5...The only reason I didn't go all indigant on him was for my friends sake and it occured to me that I probably got paid 3-5 times more than him. That was enough consolation. There was nothing to provoke this (aside from my failure to flock) and there were at least 5-7 other people in the store too. Needless to say I bought nothing there or at any GW store since.

Of course you are. You came here looking for a 'there, there' but instead people are calling you out about your facts, since there's no reason you'd get kicked out for playing a 3 player game. (Most GW stores I have ever been to encourage people to play 2v1, 4v5, all vs all games just to get people involved.)

You have yet to even say that's the reason, or directly tell us what the reason was the GW employee got angry at you about.

And now you're 'bored' and want to sweep it under the rug, since people didn't just eat up your story and give you internet cuddles.

I can never read any of those 'ways my models got broken' or 'worst cases of misbehavour in a store' threads, since Im sure 50% of all the stories are people making up things to impress people on the internet, or are embellished beyond all reasnobleness.

Really?? People actually automatically assume "Well, he must have done something wrong to get yelled at"? Wow...

Roleplayer, if you look at his original post, Valkyrie asked: "I'm just wondering if incidents like this happen all the time, or wherever it was just an isolated incident." I don't really see the "People, please give me a there, there, pat on the back" in that statement. It sounds like he had a bizarre, unexpected experience and was seeing if anyone else had had one before at a GW store.

As for assuming he Obviously did something wrong, has no one here experienced being harassed, or bullied at some point in their life by someone who, for whatever reason, decided to make you a target? Or, for that matter, anyone here had the pleasure of watching a classmate/co-worker bullied by a superior because the superior didn't like them for some inexplicable reason? If you haven't, you've managed to lead a pretty lucky life.

We're currently dealing with a superior at work who has already been in trouble for openly yelling at staff for reasons that, when broken down, amounted to "They wouldn't gossip" and "They asked me to do my job." I've watched another co-worker get in trouble for a very minor thing, apologize for it, then continue to get emails from the superior and veiled threats of "Well, I've talked to my bosses about your behavior." Y'know what? Sometimes crap happens to you for no apparent reason at all...

Like Valkyrie said earlier, maybe the Manager was tired of dealing with young'uns that particular day, snapped out, and later apologized. It's not out of the ordinary. Honest.

Unless we're also to believe that if we get mugged, well, we must have done something to deserve that too...

Well, not sure why you still bother to go to GW store at all when you got very good alternative such as Wargames Heaven (unless you enjoy being around screaming hordes of 13 year olds and having to squeeze in around two tables and being made feel bad for not buying anything ). I have been there twice... and never coming back there again

Violating my never post outside of the painting/blog section was a bad idea

I'm not saying for sure he did something wrong, but in his current story, he hasn't done ANYTHING to provoke any sort of reaction.

I feel there must have been something, misheard or otherwise, that drew some kind of ire. I've just never met anyone in my 28 years on this earth that would yell at someone for no reason at all...

@Valkyrie: I'm glad that you stayed long enough to give the manager a chance to apologize. It's nice to see that someone young enough to be called "a little kid" has enough patience and self-confidence not to be bullied. Even if you or your mates had done something to provoke that behavior it is clear that the manager did not think it was called for. By hanging around, it seems like you didn't have your time ruined and the manager got a chance to make up for being abrupt. Came out rather well, I'd say.

well, it does sound like his time was bit ruined but he was simply too shocked to respond. Anyway, getting late here, not sure if there is a point delibarating this anymore, as I mentioned before any normal wargamer should stay away from GW stores if there is any alternative.

A new day, a new time zone.

That's a silly thing to say since 'the alternative' has just as much a chance being awful as a GW store. Then again, you are new here and obviously haven't seen any of the 'let's complain about our stores' threads. At least GW's outlets can't suffer the problem of being something the manager opened because he had a bit of money, and figured mixing business and pleasure would be an absolutely smashing idea.

This is a textbook case of the just world phenomenon, is it not? Upon hearing a story of this kind, people automatically jump to the conclusion that the victim must've deserved it.

It does seem like that sort of incident (just-world).

I've not had any encounters with GW staff that are similar. The closest thing being a red-shirt asking me to yell Waaaagh in order to encourage some kiddies. I understood that his motive was future sales via enthusiasm, but I also understood that it would help them feel accepted. So I did as he requested.

I remember some years back my mate went into GW and opened a pack of Magic the Gathering cards he had picked up.
Upon seeing this the store manager immediately proclaimed "Tragic the Gathering is not accepted in this store, please put it away or leave".
My mate laughed his ass off and walked out.

'Waves hand' This isn't the user you are looking for.

I had a very good one noone pushed you to buy to buy anything at all and the worst I ever saw are people being asked to eat outside as they have sloppy food (eg. ice cream, Pasta salad.) and then GW decided it needed a change and now I try not to go near there as the moment you walk in the door they shove boxes of space marines white dwarfs and whatevers new into your handand push you into the counter and I also heard them telling younger players that they would NEED to get the big rulebook otherwise they wouldn't have all the rules. I understand that they get a pat on the back for every kit they sell but even sothey don't bother asking what army you've got they assume its space marines. thank you for reading and I hope the sort of thing in this thread doesn't happen to anyone.

Never had an issue, but then again I play at warhammer world so the staff game is pretty high!

We do however get the occasional new guy "so your here with the kids" aproach to the wife which we laugh off as she has been gaming longer then most of them have been alive:-)

My comments are my own, and mine own alone. If you have any complaints, please report to Mr Spanky who will take them down for you.....

Soapbox Script: On

Wow. There's a lot of animosity for someone stating what happened to them.

Do wierd and unexplainable things happen? Hell yes. Has anyone ever been treated or treated someone else unfairly? I'm sure everyone has. But to simply rail on someone who states something out of the ordinary happened to them doesn't automatically mean they're lying. People can be mistaken. Or they don't see everything that was transpiring around them. Or it really happened.

Personally, I believe the OP until I see or hear something that makes me feel otherwise. Of course, this is the interwebz so everything is suspect.

Heh, don't feel bad about it, Roleplayer; instead feel lucky you've never met people like that.

Here's another example for you, from my experiences: Years ago I volunteered at the school I now work at as a "Parking Patrol" member. The school had recently changed its traffic patterns, and we were to help people keep moving, find spots to park, etc.

One day I'm on duty, and a spot opens up right by where the children come out. I go to the car that's next, and the person has gone inside. So I move to the next car, tap on the window, and start my "Sir, if you'd like, a spot has opened up closer to the entrance" spiel; I get as far as "like" and the man in the car yells (yes, that's right, yells) at me "Why are you bugging me, you F'ing racist! I don't have to do nothin'! You F'in' racist!"

Well, believe me, I was as shocked and dismayed as can be. I still to this day have no idea what was on his mind, or why he attacked the way he did, but I do know it was the last day for me on the Parking Patrol.

Did I do something to deserve it? Nope. Does stuff like this really happen? Sadly, yes.

Great thread. Whats all the "He must have had a reason to be mad" stuff?
Maybe his reason was that you were doing something he thought was totally wrong but any rational person would not find that same thing wrong. A slight possibility being that people have different values, beliefs and opinions.

It's the internet though.....who knows GW Brighton might not even exist!
