Google docs is the best, access anywhere and the ability to share and collaborate in real time is great

Yeah but MS Excel is on my laptop . . . so access anywhere, and I don't need to collaborate. Plus it doesn't take time to get to, it's just on the homepage. And I've been using for years, so kinda used to it by now lol
Always stick to what you're best at. =D

Yes, many people still do. (I'm not one of them), especially in the laptop and netbook form factors.

Open Office ftw
I do use M$ for the table of contents and decorative crap. But it's from the PCs I use at my IT course, right before I get the assignments printed.
Gwar! you just reminded me of a crappy Dell add. they were going on and on about how great it was at office work, but I never once saw a keyboard or mouse. The other one they advertised in the same ad pretty much boasted about having them though
Well it's usually better to buy a pre-built PC when it's a laptop/netbook otherwise you can save a bit by just building the desktop yourself.

I've thought about building a PHP based database to build army lists...but I am actually more worried about the legal hammer that could come from such a page.

I'm doing the same thing. But It's probably not getting posted to the internet at large. I'm using it as a proof-of-concept for my portfolio for web development/database applications. (Plus I'm limiting it to armies I play...)

I use Excel too for army lists. With a little forethought and a lot of evolution you can get some nice lists set up.
I started out using it as a list of all the models I had and how much they would cost, so I could build armies and not realize later I was 3 girls short of a squad. Now I use it to just copy paste squad assignments and keep track of my points. Quite handy, and once you get the trick down you can put them together well.
I haven't gone so far as to make a pivot table with ALL possibilities, mostly because I don't have hugely variable armies, running most of the characters the same way with minimal changes.

Making your own list creation tool is legal AFAIK in the U.S. under the current fair use laws. Don't distribute or sell it.
Note:
I'm not a lawyer, this is not legal advice.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

Well as long as you're not profiting from it then it's perfectly legal as far as I know. But if you were selling off your excel sheets then that could be illegal.

it all seems alot of effort, seeing as i have a list of points and stats in my codex, and i have pen and paper,
as to the stupid C&D scare, the guy saying all of it doesn't seem to understand things properly, dakkadakka users use registered trademarks all the time, and on top of that there is a difference between 'Army Builder' and 'army builder'
