QFT. I used to live where curling was king, and it drove me nuts. Even where I live now, there are two curling clubs within a half hour's drive.

It's a game, not a sport. Shuffleboard anyone?

As noted, this is a traditionally quiet sport. It’s that way both because of the concentration factor, and the communication needed between team members.

There are a whole lot of sports where spectators are expected to be quiet and not obstruct the athletes, and some of you are making yourselves look like absolute ignoramuses by pretending otherwise. What, you’ve never heard of golf, or tennis, or (for an immediately-relevant sport) figure skating? How about gymnastics or weightlifting?

Bad show on the judges/referees for not shutting the crowd up. I can hardly point fingers too judgmentally at the fans, as they’re probably erring mostly out of ignorance.

Weight lifting is loud.
Figure skating is loud-the music can be intensely loud
Same for gymnastics.

Weight lifting is quiet during the lift, its very much like golf. With massive men lacking necks, and the inability to swing their arms across their bodies.

The music in figure skating is actually used by the skaters to coordinate and time their routine. If spectators were yelling and drumming on seats to a degree that made it hard for the skater to hear the music, that would be disruptive.

In all of these sports, the spectators cheer AFTER the athlete's done, or during a release/after a difficult maneuver is completed. They shut up while the athletes are concentrating/trying to do their stuff.

I hear you. I enjoy some of the skiing (ski cross is cool; and I've always wanted to ski jump ever since seeing those Wide World of Sports clips on TV as a kid), and I watch figure skating with the wife. More to your taste, maybe- I heard that the US/Canada men’s hockey game Monday night was really good, but I missed it.

At any rate, even the silly sports have people putting a ton of time into them, and traveling internationally to compete. The Olympics are pretty awesome, even when they’re silly, so people being donkey-caves to the competitors isn’t cool, in my book.

Seems like there's alot of folks who don't understand that quiet and crowd politeness is necessary for some sports. Not every kind of competition madates people screaming and cheering. The article metions figure skating as such a sport, and as curling seems to require alot of communication at low volumes, it should be given the same courtesy.

Also, the fact that the fans seem to have been loud during the Dane's, but not during the Candians points toward deliberate distraction and not merely fans not knowing better.

Sounds like its time to institute some crowd guidelines for curling. It shouldn't be necessary, but as the hooligans seem to have found another sport to interefere with, it's clearly needed.

Cricket? Actually cricket is a good example of the opposite, Crowds often deliberately put off bowlers in cricket, it's accepted. You need to get yourself to a live match, it's not quiet at all. Just like a footballer if a cricketer came out after a match and complained about crowd distraction they'd be laughed at.

As for curling it would be good to find out if there are already rules in place about this or if it's just that they have become acustomed to quiter games outside of the olympics therefore ruling has not been necessary. Then we would know if it goes in the tennis/snooker category or with football/cricket etc.

I can picture you telling that to Genghis Connie if she got into pairs figure skating, and at a college event some jackass yelled during a lift and she fell... Just sayin'. Though that's a bit more serious than curling, they're just different degrees of severity for the same offense, really.

Weightlifting is another sport where you really don't want to piss off the competitors by being noisy.

Same with shooting, javelin, archery, fencing, wrestling, boxing, judo...

It isnt rage, its Skill, it takes alot of training to just use your fists and elbows. players work hard to master this skill and their emotions, so that they dont fall to the dark side. the darkside is rage, when you jump up and down on someones neck in a hockey fight. fun to watch, messy to clean up.
