I'm also happy to see that they're sticking with English accents. I know that sounds like a 'snob' thing to say, but 40K is English. Everyone in that has an English accent - and I'm glad they're representing that.

I hope its not gonna be at scale...

...You don't understand how motion capture works, I think.

They set it up so that they get a feeling for how the bodies move, naturally. They can then use that information to scale it up or down, as necessary. Take note of the Cave Trolls from Fellowship of the Ring--those were down by a guy in a motion capture suit doing exaggerated ape-like gait. Then it was scaled up and rendered.

Voila! Instant Cave Troll with natural movements, rather than the jerkiness of stop-motion or models.

Hehehe, yeah I know, I was joking. Old school motion capture used models and cameras... Having paid millions probably for those actors and the movie to have some badly painted 28mm models on screen woulda been hilarious.

Ah wait no, thats stop motion. Durrr....

EDIT: Look at more videos with John Hurt. He was in Spaceballs AND Tron Legacy. Hes cool.

John Hurt is an uber famous actor... he played Winston Smith in 1984 and then Chancellor Sutler in V for Vendetta and the reason he played that part in Sapceballs was because he was the guy that had the alien burst out of his chest in Alien. Also he was in the first Harry Potter as well...

Holy Gak.

Before I was mildly interested and wondering whether this movie would work or just be god awful.

Now my expectation level has gone through the roof - this is a seriously good collection of acting talent (why has no-one mentioned The Elephant Man when talking about John Hurt BTW??) that should bring the necessary gravitas to the roles.

The visuals were always going to be fairly shiny, but with this talent and a (hopefully) good Abnett story, this could be the best thing GW has ever done...

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

He played an Ultramarines Captain in Fire Warrior. That game had a half decent plot IIRC and they did bolters properly too. I do not want to see dakka dakka bolters in this film.

If Dawn of War taught us anything it's that Space Marines are American (though some of their high ranking officers are British), Imperial Guard and Eldar are English and Tau are Asian.

Good voice acting can overcome any manner of bad animation.

All British, all deep voiced, all well spoken, 2 oscar nominees. It really looks like they've put effort AND money into this. I wasn't expecting to have any names attached, so having THREE is a pleasant surprise (well, 2 and Terrance Stamp. He's more of a Geek idol than A-list actor IMO).

My biggest hope is they don't water it down to make it marketable. Then i'll be happy, because even if it's awful i'll know they tried.

That's nice thing to say. As an Englishman, I was happy to see the strong UK prescence in LOTR. In my own humble opinion, the English accent is efficient, and perhaps (for obvious reasons) simply sounds a little more archaic. This may be why English actors are prominent in depicting Romans, or Spartans, etc.

Now here's a point of discussion.
Anyone from outside of the US is, I feel, used to American accents. The sheer number of US made films makes this inevitable, and by all accounts it's a minor point. However, on occassion I have seen US audiences react uncomfortably to pure English accents. I'm not canvassing all Americans with this, so don't get annoyed if you're an American who loves world cinema etc. To summarize; do members of Dakka think that this will harm the potential of the film in terms of commercial success? Or do you think that GW is such a niche hobby that it will simply not be an issue? I am leaning heavily towards the latter.

As for the OP; some great actors; still think film will be an embarrasement. Needs to be rated 18 for full brownie points.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

Or Germans, oddly enough, when they're not going for the full ersatz accent.

Plus I love English accents. I can imitate a bunch of them (my Dad's English, I watch a lot of British TV)... thought I can't do a Scouse/Liverpool accent yet. That annoys me.

Occasionally we hear English accents too thick for the average American to understand, but that's often in combination with phrasing that we're not used to. Half of comprehension is anticipation. And some dialects use colloquialisms that we're just not familiar with.
But to generalize I'd say that most Americans hardly notice the English accents in movies anymore. We hear it frequently. LotR, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, etc. Quite often, I personally don't even notice the accents in these movies.

I think its fair to say that 'thick accents' will not be a problem with this film - its not a Guy Ritchie cock-er-nee gangster film (is it true that lock stock was subtitled in some parts of america or is that just an urban myth?)
