Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

He's not broken at 500, the whole game is; 40K is not meant to be played at such puny size.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

When correctly used its should be difficult to kill him. For me i have a Crusader with 13 Death company,Chaplain and Priest. Start of the game Mephiston can not start inside the Crusader(due to it being a dedicated transport) so have to make sure he can embark on turn 1. Usually i deploy the crusader sideways and make sure he can embark on the side. Use Rhinos to speed ahead and provide cover saves for the Crusader also i pop smoke on the rhinos so they get them too. Once hes out of the Crusader make sure hes in the middile of your guys so stray lascannon shots can not find their mark. with regards to enemy anti-pysker abilties just make sure you bring them down early if you can so mephiston can unleash the fury. I find you can use Mephiston to charge solo under the strict condition you tie up units in combat which have the ability to seriously ruin his day. The best thing about Mephiston is the amount of options he presents you with in game.

So long story short, throw a 120 point unit of 30 gretchin at him and keep him bogged down.
Chances are you can cut a few turns from him, and the warp should do some damage to him if the player keeps going with powers.
Failing that, deathleaper to drop his LD then work away with an alpha.

I was afraid until I looked at my friends tyranid warrior list. Mephiston is scary. A SQUAD with power weapons that cause id? That's horrifying.

Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Ive been using mephiston a lot lately and he really needs combo charges with additional units to make him really powerful.. That way you can get some random scrub into BTB with their powerfist and let mephiston murder the rest of the unit
Or you use him as an anti-big guy unit which marines tend to lack in CC.. Psyker defense, invul saves and eternal warrior really make him less potent.. Im considering other Hqs now due to his lack of reliability in every game
If you play him right hes very good as Ive said before.. its just too easy to make him go from super powerful down all the way to decent.. When he cant kill his target in one attack he tends to be a lot worse

What happens to the unit when Mephiston takes it? They hoof it? Or do they have jump packs? Also, a death company squad is no place for a Priest, they already have FNP and furious charge.

You can not put Meph in a transport with another unit, he is not an IC.

Deathleaper won't work as he is not an independent charector.

I played him against Eldrad on Saturday and figured I might as well go for the powers, cause without them he's moving pretty slowly. I caused myself three POW wounds in the effort to get to the combat and using Sanguine Sword to take out a Wave Serpent.
So Runes of Warding were bad but not a complete block.
The Gretchin thing will only work if no one can help Meph with it, and even then you're going to get sweeping advanced into next week

Its a shame this thread turned into "this is how I'd kill him." Because obviously he is killable, or we would have some problems. Much like any tyranid MC, enough quality shooting can take him down. unlike nid MCs, he is a teeny tiny little model that can hide from LOS and gain a 4+ cover save by having a toe nail behind a blade of grass.
I would rate him as an excellent unit for a particular type of blood angels list. the fact that he doesn't just get auto-included in every BA list shows that he is probably costed correctly, but when he is the comet tail behind a mechanized rush he will do very well.
He is about the only special character in that book that I'd consider taking competitively, were i a blood angels player.

Agreed.
I tested him a bit, but I didn't get great mileage out of him so I ended up trading him in for a unit of Sanguinary Guard. I'm getting more utility out of the Sanguinary guard right now (2+ save followed by FNP is outrageous). I think my list is simply not really conducive to Mephiston as I feel like he needs a bit of close support and my list doesn't necessarily offer that all the time. The Sanguinary Guard + Priest just work out to be more killy and more resilient against anything that doesn't ignore armor saves. I'm still not sure if my BA list is even that good at this point as I've only gotten like 10 games in with it. I seem to be pretty evenly matched against Space Wolves so far, but I get trounced by mech IG. So I guess take this whole thing with a grain of salt at this point since my list is probably not the best.

Although I had great fun with Meph, I'm putting him aside for now in favor of a Reclusiarch with a Death Company Fun Bus.
What I really like about Meph is that he's relatively cheap when you consider he's almost completely self-contained; no big retinue or transport cost necessary in order to run him effectively.
