I don't think we need to let this fall into a debate on the merits of modern art, because that'd be dull. I think we can all agree that while great, original works can still be created there's also a lot of crap getting made, just as there was in every age.

And that thing is definitely one of the uglier ones.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

no that would be due to the RAF
Battle of Britain 1940 70th anniversary this year

Not to mention Hitler. If he hadn't invaded the Soviet Union, he could have thrown everything at England and probably won.

The 1000th anniversary of the last invasion of England will be in 2066 (Norman Invasion, Battle of Hastings)

I beg to differ, it even looks like you know something made, http://fotovoto.esradio.fm/index.php?id=234&c=all, this is at Valencia´s Northen road, somebody had some scrap metal and a politician too much public money.

Yes, that is ugly. Therefore all modern art is ugly and no classical art was every ugly. Or something. It's a boring argument to have, dude, can we not?

Let's just talk about how ugly that Olympics thing is, because that thing is ugly.

The Battle of Britain ended in September 1940. It was more than a year later that the US entered the war, in December 1941. While US aid had begun before then with the Lend Lease program, that only started in March 1941, months after the Battle of Britain. If you wanted to get really technical you could argue for the Destroyers for Bases program, but that was only agreed to in September 1940, and no destroyers had been delivered by the end of the Battle of Britain.

Britain wasn’t invaded because an amphibious landing is a really, really hard thing to do. Germany was engaged in a massive war with the Soviets and trying to defend a greater expanse of coastline on occupied territory and D-Day was still a hell of thing to pull off. Even if the Battle of Britain had gone against the British there was no chance of the fairly ludicrous Operation Sea Lion ever being undertaken – the most likely result was Britain withdrawing from the war.

Of course, where would we be were it not for the good ol' USA's help during the Napoleonic wars, and struggles against the Spanish armadas.

Back on topic, April Fool jokes have to be done before midday on April 1, or they don't count.

There was a good one on Radio 4 about an archaelogy team from University of Birmingham having discovered evidence that Shakespeare was half French.

Regrettably not. This was announced yesterday.

Best April Fool's joke I've seen is the plan to turn the Circle line on the London Underground into a second Hadron Collider. The Guardian's "Posh Boy, Step Outside" also had me chuckling over my cornflakes this morning.

All modern art isn't rubbish.

Angel of the North is fantastic. There is actually tons of good stuff that people connect to.

Not this one though.

Angel of the North and the Gorms and the statues in Liverpool (can't remember their name) have all been critical and popular successes.

It is rare that modern art achieves both.

As for the 'sculpture'......well....we brits still have painful memories about the 'Millenium Dome'...........*shudders*

Why does London insist on taking areas of abandoned Industrial Revolution era wasteland....and the build crap on it using waste from the over-flowing land-fill sites.....
As for the logo.....looks like Bart Simpson shaggin' Lisa up the wrong'un......

I don't think art needs anyone besides you to give it credibility. Unfortunately some feel the need to express their opinions as blanket and objective. It sucks to feel like you're on the cutting edge because you never know if you're on to something or you're just crazy like the majority will always say.
