I've always thought red worked best, its glowing hot plasma in there, the metal has to look like if you make one wrong move and you burn yourself.
Here's my plasma on my Executioner:

I personally dont have any pictures of my most new plasma weapons, but the way I do them is simple.

Paint the plasma area white, then wash it with a chosen colour(I really like Liche Purple heavily thinned down or Ashurmen Blue Wash) and then highlight if needed. Make sure that theres no white blotches though, that will look bad.

Yeah, but red's the lowest-energy part of the spectrum. Purple's the high end - I've seen some awesome looking purple plasma effects here on Dakka. I'm partial to the classic blue myself.

Plasma glows white-blue hot.

If you go green you start looking like Necron Gauss weaponry.

Red......ummmmm........daemon plasma!

Just personal opinion

I like using purples you don't see it that much:

These are from my Inq Guard blog: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/272476.page

There are some more plasmas in here to: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/283264.page

Simple tip that works for most colours: Start with a dark colour, do 2 - 3 layers of highlights, wash with the desired colour, then highlight again ending with a very thin line of almost white.

If on a vehicle or long enough coils you could paint it in a stripe pulse pattern

Or

Base coat, dry brush with a lighter mix before the rest of the model is started, wash then lightly dry brush again.

I still like green plasma. It contrasts well with the black armour of my Black legionaires and my ultramarines. Red tends to be naturally messy looking, but blues, greens and purples tend to look really good.
