Thats not TOTALLY true. He left out the binding of the feet so they have small feet.

I think I might be a bit to cynical and jaded to belive in a "utopian society",and more so,I have to honestly admit that I don't have the fist idea what one would truely be....as Silver posted earlier...one mans utopia is another mans hell,so obviously no such society can or will exist.
Now,as a personal utopia,I'd like to see a world in wich people can go about their own business (within certian perimiters) with out being persicuted.
where people can exchange ideas/philosophys in a civil manner.
where poverty is unknown and no child goes to bed hungry or afraid.
where people give a damn about more than just their wants and needs.
...and where I am adored by every atractive woman I meet...THAT...is my utopia.

I don't believe in God, but I'm okay with guns and rednecks, and I'm not very liberal, or a rapist.

My Utopian Wolrd is pretty much like this one, except I have way more money and the Dark Angels Codex is actually good.

You seem to have assumed utopian means a society with a lot of government control, it doesn’t. It can mean a society with little or no government




Government would consist of twelve men, each serving their own 12 year term – each year one man would retire and a new election held for his replacement. Underneath these 12 learned gentlemen there would be a vast and highly inefficient bureaucracy, constantly expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.

Economics – The only tax is an income tax, progressively scaling from 0% for a standard working poor income to 50% for the upper middle class. Primary areas of government expenditure are health, welfare and maintenance of our giant army of titanium robots.

Prison – emphasis on rehabilitation first, protection of society second, with the deterrent effect not valued. Unless you piss me off personally, then you’re going to cop it.

Education – mandatory ten years of schooling, after that if you don’t want to be there there’s no point in making you stay. Emphasis on critical thinking, debate, maths and other fundamental skills, vocational skills to be developed in integrated school and industry partnerships – a sophisticated apprenticeship program, basically.

Transportation – short distance travel would be by penny-farthing, medium distance travel by monorail, and long distance travel by zeppelin.

Citizenship – there would be test to be taken when you turn 18. This test would ask potential citizens a range of questions, from recent political events to correct grammar and pronunciation. The test wouldn’t be that strict but it’d be unlikely any of you ne’er do wells would make pass.

Immigration & non-citizenship status – if you’re pretty we’ll let you stay. If (when) you stop being pretty we’ll kick you out.

Population Control – from the age of 30 all citizens are required to enter Thunderdome to fight another randomly determined citizen. The winner gains another decade in utopia, the loser is turned into Soylent Green.

Alcohol is allowed from any age. However, there'd be a complicated excise system in place, pricing decent stuff up and dropping the price of crap tasting stuff. The only alcohol that'd be affordable to a teenager would be the nastiest liquers. In my society there would be.

Although, some states due in fact have permit-free gun ownership. Can't recall which ones but a few do exist.

Some interesting ideas here, I will reply to them when I have a bit more time (currently about to go to work ).

Economic Systems
Still mostly capitalist but with plenty of socialist programs. Welfare would still be available, but you would have to work for it. An idea voiced by, I believe Kanluwen, sounded good. He mentioned allowing welfare, but those that use it would be housed in bunkers with passable but spartan quarters. Basically, this would provide for those at the end of their rope, but encourage effort to find outside employment.

What about those who loose their jobs but own their own houses etc? Would they have to sell up before they were entitled to welfare? Or would they be able to work for the state from home, rather than live in a welfare bunker? What about families where one member works, but another is claiming benefits?

Marriage
As a legal status is gone and replaced with civil unions. Marriage is still okay, but it means nothing from a law perspective.

Marriage in all but name. A sensible thought. Would civil unions be permitted between all sexes? Would you only allow one partner at a time, or would you cater for groups to marry one another, etc?

War
Nuclear arms gone. General decrease in world defense spending, although all nations have at least a small set of armed forces (naval, air, ground).

Would there be any particular use for armed forces, or would they be used more as disaster relief (etc) forces, rather than fighting in conventional wars?
