Low and behold, there are other 40kish type threads about every once in a while, and one of them brought up the ol' anti Chaos God, Malal- and how perhaps Malal is in fact the Emperor, or the reason that the Inquisiton is such as it is- rigid, inflexible, and devoted to destroying chaos, is because they are themselves servants of the Chaos god turned against chaos, Malal.

Another is that whole theory that Horus won, and it is indeed he who sits upon the Golden throne- which is really why the sacrifice of 1000 psykers a day to keep the astronomican going is needed.

I mean, AFAIK, Horus and the traitors never called the Emperor a 'false Emperor' but had issues with their perception of him reaching to attain godhood, and turning their backs on them. But he was still 'The Emperor', even if Horus wanted to take the position himself.

What makes the Emperor 'False' if its still the Emperor who united Terra and the Imperium under his banner?

The saying originates from the battle of Istvaan. The emperor had betrayed his loyal if somewhat misguided son Curze by sending assassins to kill him after he had outlived his usefulness. Captain Sevatar shouted those words naming the emperors treachery as he led the Night Lords to battle and the other traitor legions echoed it.

Horus was setting himself up to become the Emperor, or at least replace Him.

I'm reading through Mechanicum at the moment and there's discussion between the Fabricators regarding giving Horus their support in his bid for supremacy. I'd say that most of those loyal to Horus see him as a better Emperor and that the current one who's nicked off back to Terra (for some smokes and take-out, it was said. Don't worry, he'll be back, I'm sure of it) without bothering to finish the crusade He started.

The Emperor did not wish to be worshiped as a god. The Ecclesiarchy only created the Imperial Cult after the Emperor's death to retain power and stop the Imperium from collapsing.

Chaos marines wanted to follow Horus as their Emperor, so that would make the True Emperor of Mankind "false".

I always found this funny. He didn't want to be worshiped as a god, but he sort of did with the Admech for trying to get them on his side. Also, he isn't helping his case when he wears gold armor and is a very powerful psyker.

The word bearers were seeking a god, because Lorgar was seeking a god and they are 100% loyal to him and molded in his image.
When the emperor spured them, they in dispair that their god could treat them like that kept looking for other gods and found a pantheon of being older and more powerful than the emperor.

I have been reading Fulgrim, and Fulgrim does say it (although privately) way before the Drop Site Massacre. Even before the Isstvan V purges.

And he calls him the False Emperor because he doesn't recognize him as Emperor anymore.
