Hey I'm still new to the rules (ironically because I learned 2nd ed., and 3-3.5 ish) but I find that if I explain that to an opponent before a game is committed to, they are usually helpful at reminding me the differences and things I may be confused about. My first game after a 10 year hiatus, I was still moving my guys 4", declaring all my fire before I started rolling, actually "guessing" range for guess range weapons... and trying to use overwatch. I got sobered up pretty fast by 4th ed. crash course because a friendly player understood that I was old school and just confused. I felt like a hermit might feel after years off in the woods, walking into the middle of time square... what's an iPod? what's a hybrid? who's the president?

I'm 16 and I:
- Have read the rulebook cover to cover
- Am practically an encyclopedia of knowledge about the game and the hobby
- Give .01 % of a damn if I win or lose
- Am always a good sport
- Have all my models are painted to a reasonable standard
- Am a competent, though not exceptional commander
- Bought and painted all models myself, with my own job money (not a spoiled kid whose parents bought them their toys)
- Believe in Rule of Cool/Rule of Fun over WAAC
- Am Not a spastic lolsorandum internet tard.
Unfortunately, I seem to be the exception that proves the rule around my LGS.

You're also 16. I don't think of 16 yr old gamers as kids. its the 10-ish players that are kids in my point of view. 16 year old at my store plays a Ghazzkul green tide list that is so spammed efficient and disgustingly well-thought out most people are scared to play him. 10 yr old or 12 yr old on the other hand... well.. it goes like this:
I never want to play against them. Its not as if they are bad sports, or stupid even. But they just don't "get it" yet. Poor army builds, poor maneuvering choices. (who plays a squad of termies without a weapon upgrade, and footslogs them up the middle against my horde of dire avengers? who deepstrikes within move-fleet-charge range of harlequins but not close enough to target them?)
Tack on the fact that his dad (who looks like about my age) is WATCHING THE GAME as I am trying my hardest to give the kid a break, making stupid moves, 'forgetting' to move something, etc. giving advice. but you still end up slaughtering him because you can't ACT like you are trying to lose.
The way my FLGS runs its league you are just stuck with an opponent no matter how mismatched the players are. Different opponent depending on your position on the strategic map they keep in the store.
Some of the younger 20-ish guys in the store deliberately steer towards 'the kid' for an easy boost to their win/loss, while the older of us (I'm 35, which makes me OLD as a gamer) try to steer our armies away from him. The fact that his dad is watching you kick his sons butt and slaughter his cherished and diligently painted first army, and his dad is around your age, and doesn't understand that you are REALLY TRYING to let the kid win, but it's just not posssible without being blatantly obvious about it, and you know he just thinks you are a total dick... makes me feel like I was beating up a toddler in a heavyweight boxing match, on a playground where his mom is watching me do this... not a good feeling for the long drive home.

the only problem i have with younger folks is that tehy seem to have a tendency to have smaller armies and keep switching their army when they loose. a friends little bro has 7 armies all around 400 pts, he keeps switching because he does a game and looses because he doesnt know how to play them well yet. Honestly anything below 1k points is hard to have alot of variety in and gets booring to me. thats rly the only problem ive had with younger players.

People always heap scorn on people who are a few years younger than them. 13 year olds complain about ten year olds, 16 year olds complain about 13 year olds and so on.
Sometimes there's a good reason to be annoyed, sometimes there isn't. Either way it's more about forming your identity than anything else (I am older and not like those people three years younger than me).

I am only 15 years old,so I think I am not qualified to judge myself, but I think some people at my age really like to win(as 2 years ago I was one of them)
They usually dun have a very good list, and they dun usually have a tactical mind(I don't either! But at least I think about my moves)
They just put in everything good in thier army and rush them forward(one kid had 2 land raiders and got them blown in the first turn, bright lance gunline)
They judge units just by thier profiles, for example rks arer untakable, too weak;always marines, they are good!,something like that

When I was a kid, I don't actually remember much about wanting to know more rules apart from the interesting stuff (like D-Cannon tables, or 'Jones is acting strangely'). I much preferred the background.
I never played against anyone not my age though then.
I've played a game with some kids (actually I was on their side and against another player), though it was more of teaching them how to play 40k, and they were fine. They didn't know the rules too well, but I didn't expect them to but was happy to let them engage their imagination, since that's what 40k is about, right?

Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

My take on young people:
I have been wargaming since age 12, and, at least in my opinion, I wasn't an annoying little child. In fact, none of the kids(below age 15) were very annoying. Up until about 6 months ago, our least enjoyed player was about 38 years old, and very strongly set in his role as TFG. . Definately WAAC. But it was ok, as he did not show up that much.
Then, we had a small child show up. By small, I mean 13. He is the exact stereotype of the annoying little kid: Doesn't know his codex, or even understand the basic principles of the game. However, he is very sure that he knows what is in his book, in the core rulebook, and in your book(even though he might have never even seen one before). Also, he does not paint most of his models, and those that he did, well... suffice it to say that I wish he hadn't. It's painful to look at. Not that I mind people who cannot paint; I myself can't paint well either. But this is what gets me: his best painted model, a tac marine, was slathered in ultramarines blue, with a huge dab of white on the shoulder pad, that has overflowed and run down the side of the model, and he still criticizes other people's models.
It was sort of a shock to us, as we had never known any kid to be so annoying. We were all used to relatively mature, careful kids in our flgs. We had all heard the horror stories of the "red bull can" kid, but had never seen it. We thought it was exaggeration.
We were wrong.
On the upside, his parents have decided that they don't like having him hanging around with a bunch of guys ranging from 16-40, without them supervising. He has not shown up in over a month. Ahhhh...bliss.
Basically, I have no grief against kids in general; I just have to figure it out on each one.

I'm confused by this mentality of being certain you're right in the face of concrete evidence to the contrary. You can't chalk it up to immaturity, because by that age you should grasp the concept of logic, or at least basic arithmetic. For example, if you didn't let me rapid fire my weapons at your berserkers because you deemed that I was 12.05" away, then there is no way that you could be assaulting me on your turn. How can you possibly argue against that?
And I agree with Frazzled, the social interaction is a large part of the appeal. Kids/young teenagers don't really qualify as people (more like hormonal meatbags), so there's no real social interaction there. Might as well go to the zoo and roll dice with the monkeys; at least they have decent attention spans.

Ahh, this takes me back to when I was a younger gamer, and as it turns out, annoying gamer. I was a walking encylopedia of rules, tactics, and helpful advice that I would gladly give to anyone, even those who didn't know enough to ask me about it. In short I was rather obnoxious. I honestly thought that strangers wouldn't mind me walking up to their game and telling them that they where breaking the rules and then tell them how to do it properly. I just never occured to me, I mean why wouldn't they want my advice. I rarely ever lost a game of 40k or fantasy and won most of the local tournaments.
Turns out I was abit of a condescending d-bag as a youngster.....but I got better...I hope.
