Very nice stuff here. I particularly like the first lasgun-armed Kroot. The extra clothing suits him somehow. The heavy also looks very sharp, though might I suggest adding some armor to the thighs? Or perhaps some flame-retardant cloth? The legs look a little bare compared to the rest of the model.

Right. So i gather this thread died a long time ago, however with the help of some Post mortem connections (Cookie to anyone who gets the reference) I have been able to bring the thread kicking and screaming back to life. Some might call this threadnomancy, but I call it giving the thread a spring clean.

I apologise for the extreme lack of updates, but, well i have no excuse except fro some sheer laziness on my part.

So onto the pictures. You will be pleased to know that I got off my lazy backside and decided to paint up my Kroot, and this is the fruits of my labour. I went for natural colours, as i cant be having with red or blue Kroot.

So this one was my test. I think it looks pretty nice, and I even attempted weathering on the knife and lasgun. Of course, it's not a great shot for this, so I'll upload some more shots later.

This one here is a PIP. I haven't got round to highlighting the skin yet. You'll also notice his heads missing. Im honestly not sure where its gone, but i gather my cat may have been snooping around them the other day...

Another PIP. Not sure if it looks that great at the moment. Im considering skin variation on the back of the body, but im not very steady handed, and I suck at blending. Does anyone have any ideas for a way round this?

Incidently, i forgot to snap some pictures of my Hounds, both of which are finished.

My next Kroot is a serious WIP. Now, you may recall a long time ago i was rambling on about entering a Necromunda campaign with my Kroot with the intention of winning best converted leader prize. Well, I won, but sadly I didnt win Best Converted gang on account of using Imperial guard as Proxies for my Juves. I still haven't cracked the Juve Code, as i have an image of what i want them to be, but i can't find anyway of bringing it to life.

So this is the leader, in his glorious state of rage.

This was my first real foray into sculpting with GS on a major scale. I had to rebuild his entire Pelvis area from scratch, as well as sculpt Musculature onto his arms. The effect i was trying to achieve is a Kroot which is a bit Genestealer-ey. This is why i changed the leg shape (To be more akin to a genestealers) and tried to emulate the genestealer pelvic area. He's also got the venomthropes tail and a mouth full of teeth.

Pelvis shot. Lots of Greenstuff.

A shot of his face. A apologise for the slight blur, but my camera isn't that great.

So from this angle you can see the musculature i tried to do on his arms. Im not really that happy with it, but it was a first attempt. The kroot also has a ring pierced into his back, inspired by the ogre kingdoms piercings.

So thats all for now, I hope you enjoy this update, and dont forget to leave a comment!

Looking good with those conversions, Ghosty. However, I don't really know whether it's the lighting or not, but the skin on your painted Kroot looks really brown. I thought they had a sort of darkish (not the right word.. muted perhaps?) green colour for their skin. Then again, just living off the refuse, scrap and whatever else is alive in the underhive (that lives off aforementioned refuse, scrap, and also waste or whatever) might have a sort of sickening affect on a species that absorbs DNA from what it eats..

Keep this stuff coming! Although what I'd really love to see is a battle report!

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I'm aware that this is a re-opened thread, and I don't mean to be a boob-basher... there's nothing in the fluff that says Kroot can't be female unlike a certain popular subject, but can they really be classified as mammals? You know, those things that have anterior mammaries? I would think that as an avine sort of creature, a female one would just be slightly smaller with less interesting colouration.

Great conversion work overall.. hehe... just had to get that off my chest. Is there any backstory behind the genestealer-evolution? I mean, kroot absorb genetic material and can develop alien traits, but is this a genestealer-hybrid kroot or what?

He has done fluff for it. Go search through the threads created by Ghosty (list on his profile, but I'm guessing with 3k posts you probably are aware of that already).

Dark, lemme deal with the comments

@Arctik_Firangi - I do agree with you. Simple as that. Kroot aren't mammilian and therefore wouldn't have breasts. But, on the flipside, have you ever tried to make a Kroot look suitably feminine? Its bloody hard, and i tried everything i could before the addition. Still, it annoys me rather a lot, but it was the best i could really do.

@ Dark - The skin does look pretty brown, but thats maybe cos i painted it brown. In natural light it does look more flesh toned though.

@Nerdfest - Im using, or was using the Escher gang as the basis, partly cos my mate was using goliath for his orks, and Escher are pretty scary up close, but also pretty damn agile. Perfect for Kroot IMO

Here's an idea for making Kroot women,

*attach rolling pin to hand, and rollers in hair (quills)
*give them handbags
*paint their nails
*give them copious amounts of shopping bags
*maybe put them in a dress
*have them yelling at the male Kroot

what do you think? :-)

I'm recently finished reading the first Cain book, within it states that you wouldn't be able to tell a male kroot from a female kroot by simply looking at them.
As such female kroot would be very similar in looks and attire to the males.

Depending on the species females can be larger or smaller, or more (or less) brightly coloured than the males... You'd have to look into it to find out what applies to kroot.
But i doubt there would be too much modeling involved in the process, proberly just a slight change in colour tone (but i'd imagine colours would change depending on the kroots diet anyway)

There's some great models here, keep the good work up!

I had a quick read though the comment and didn't see anyone has posted this already, sorry if they have. This is a link to some kroot rules for necromunda that someone has written, they need some tweaks buts is pretty cool stuff.

What colours did you use on the Kroot? I'm digging the reddy brown, especially on the legs of the headless sniper.

For the skin variation you could try controlled washes using watered down paint. Try doing it in a few thin layers rather than in one go.

I often test paint effects/colours on spare parts. I've got a pair of space marine legs with numerous layers of paint on them.

A way I improved my blending was by: A controlled light dry brush - use a colour only a tiny bit different than the base coat, this would show you where the highlight would be. Then neated with the same colour watered down to get rid of the powderyness that dry brushing can leave. Then add a bit more of the highlight/new colour and repeat the process until you are happy etc etc with the colour change moving away from the base coat. To smooth the blending you could also try using a watered down INK between layers (i find that the foundation citadel washes are NOT good for this at all).

Anyways nice kroot, looking forward to seeing the kroot hounds.

btw i like the green stuffing, the ring buckle on the kroot/genestealer hybrid's right shoulder is really good.

Wow, someone asking ME about painting! For the Kroot skin, I used a mix of Dwarf Flesh, and Graveyard Earth over a white basecoat, before washing with ogryn flesh. Highlights will be the same mix except with a bit of white. I hope that helps?

Heres a small update for you guys

I finished up on the leader. All he needs now is a douse of white primer and i'll go to town on him. Im planning on trying out mottling and some blending on this guy!
I had to Pin his hands in place because they were pretty brittle and there wasn't a lot of surface connection between the parts. He now has a pair of 2cm pins running through his arms and hands. I covered the gap with some swanky wrist straps.

(click on the gallery for a better shot)

Next up on the agenda:

Another heavy for my gang, this time armed with a grenade launcher. I also have given him a fire retardant apron, as I imagine a grenade launcher could get pretty hot, andwould warrent a bit of protection.

Not the best shot, lemme take another

Not really any better, but I made the effort to make a belt, which I strived to make look like some rope.

Im not sure what his head should be like at this point in time. I have a few possible heads at the moment im working on. The first is a gas mask wearing Kroot, the second is a Kroot wearing a genestealer skull for a helmet (Im not sure about this one, I might save it for a Shamen of some description). I also have a couple more ideas. Maybe a Kroot wearing welding goggles? A blind Kroot would always be a hoot, especially for the possible house rules that could be used. And, I found a bit of an old headphone, that looks like a perfect Tau shaped helmet for Kroot. Just some thoughts knocking around. Any other suggestions?

Hmm, might need to do some serious backtracking here. I tried my hand at doing the Tau esque head, but its pretty much impossible for my sculpting level of expertise. Back to the drawing board I feel.

So I'm updating my blog again, and for this week, I'm going to see if I can't keep the updates coming. In a bid to finish the gang whilst I actually have some free time, I'm going to try and finish the entire thing in the following week. Proper painting will start on Tuesday (I lost my paintbrushes, and only have a 'large brush' at the moment) and I'm hoping I'll be done by Sunday? That's the general plan anyways. Now onto the update:

So I've done a fair bit of work over the last month on my Kroot gang, after reigniting my ambitions in the form of various inspirational threads here on Dakka. Some of the more astute of you may recall a while back that I was bitterly complaining about Kroot Juves. Or rather, how I couldn't seem to make any that worked for me. But that's all changed now. I give you the fruits of far too fiddly labour:

This is a current green. My basic idea for the Juves was that they would be used to carry around the baggage, and at first, I was fiddling with various ways of making them look like pack donkeys. However, I strayed from that idea, and as time progressed, it evolved into the young Kroot would be assigned to an older warrior, who would put them through their paces, and teach them how to hunt. The Kroot above then, is running around with my Gangs heavy, carrying his spare fuel tank.

Here's my second Juve: A quick shout out to Oadie who helped me make this guys black eye actually look decent with some helpful instructions. This Juve hasn't really been assigned to any particular Kroot yet, but I'm leaning towards choosing the older Kroot lasgunner (The one with the poncho) as I feel he'd be a kind of no nonsense 'punch his charge in the eye if he doesn't listen' guy. You may notice the white spray is a bit thick- it's like that with a fair few others. Needless to say, I'm sticking with black in future, it seems less inclined to thicken up.

Now when I was trying to make these guys originally, I wanted them to be smaller than the fully fledged adults, but still retain their looming presence on the battlefield. A bit of an oxymoron there: Be tall AND short simultaneously. But I actually think I may have succeeded in doing so.

With a Kroot adult, Nice and short, as you can see.

And looming over a future gang member, nice and tall.

And finally before I go for today, I'm setting a challenge. If anyone can guess what parts I used to make the Juves chest, will win a khocolate khip Krookie, courtesy of yours truly.

Enjoy! ( C&C please, I thrive upon it)

Ghosty you did it! That is what I imagine a kroot juve to look like.

I doubt I am going to get a khocolate khip Krookie...but I have a gut feeling to go with Skink?

Looks like its going to be a good week to be logging into Dakka

Really smooth GS work, and they look great. Nice to see you're characterising them already too - who said it's crazy to project personality onto lumps of plastic?

I don't know much about Kroot, so I couldn't really say, but those look like excellent juves to me. Glad to see you're back on the Necromunda wagon too - I'll be watching with interest

The juves are coming out great! I lioke the fluff behind them, too. As far as the torso, I'm going to say it's something from the vampire counts line, a zombie torso or something, but that's a real shot in the dark to be honest. Great work.

Here's todays update!

First of all, you were all wrong, the torso and groin area for the Juves is in fact taken from the new beastmen Ungors. Cunning or what?

Now, a while back I made my gang leader- a crazed combat warrior with a fair bit of mutation. Now, I felt, that he wouldn't actually be a good leader for a gang; he'd be too feral, too savage, he's more animal than Kroot. So, I've decided to acquire myself a kroot Shaper miniature, seeing as that lovely one we were tempted with doesn't seem to be coming out anytime soon. Of course, this left me with a dilemna. What could I possibly do with this Kroot? The answer?

Make him some friends.

I envision these Kroot variants as the Shapers experimentation to try and create a Kroot subspecies that can survive effectively within the Necromundan Hives. We have the ex-leader, the Headhunter, and the 'Alien esque' one...

First up, here's a group shot (I apologise for the quality, it's not that sunny today.)

Next up is the Headhunter. He sports similar musculature on the legs that my ex-leader has, but he's got a much more feral head- I do love the tyranid sprues!

And a better shot of his ugly mug.

Now here's the 'Alien' Kroot. Inspired by the shapes and lines of Gigers Xenomorph, I wanted this guy to seem the most debased of the group. He's low down to the ground, to hold a similar height to the Kroot hounds, and has a long tail as counter balance. His head, has a barbed tongue, much like the alien, and he has some giant spider claws as make do weapons.

Now, todays competition of spot the pieces!

The first person to tell me what 3 heads were used to make the 'Alien' Kroots head, will be the winner of an internet Krookie.

Enjoy, only 2 days to go until I start painting.

I have to say that I think this time you're cheating...dodgy photos in a game of guess the part is just tricksy!

I really didn't think of the ungors in the last round....nice going.

As for the feral kroot...I think you're right he doesn't quite work as a leader. I wish GW would get round to releasing that kroot shaper! But on the one you're going to get are you planning any conversions?

I'm waiting for paint... roll on Tuesday.

This is mostly guesswork, since it's really hard to tell from the photo, but the barbed tongue from I think it's one of the genestealer heads? something tyranid, anyway. And maybe a bloodletter head might be in there as well (with the horns cut off) - they have the swept-back look similar to a xenomorph. But you said three heads, and I have no idea beyond that.

Regardless, nice work so far - looking forward to seeing more of these guys painted
