Err... what? I wasn't responding to you

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Grey Knights are easily the greatest, they were designed to be simply better. And they're all psykers too, which makes them even more powerful.

Clearly the Ultramarines are the best of the Astartes. Their 2nd company, for example, is definitively the best fighting unit in the entire Astartes.

Hehe. The usual term is "Loyalist", as human indicates that they aren't Astartes at all (Astartes are not human, for better or worse).

Seconded. Although they haven't had much coverage recently.
Or ever really. Aside from a picture in 1st edition?

Still the tops though. Because they probably ride unicorns.

Grey Knights.
Otherwise, whatever chapter is currently in line for a new Codex.
So, atm the Blood Angels are the very best chapter evar. They smack down greater daemons left and right with their nipplearmour of doom, sodomize Eldar Avatars
and are so awesome that even the genocidal necrons wish nothing more than to be friends with them.

It was awesome right off the bat, started getting horrible in the middle, and the end was pretty funny again.

Im thinking it really would be the Black Templar. Simply because they are the same, Space Marines, but they got the numbers on the rest. If they went to battle with most Chapters, full strength, they would win hands down. Simply because they should be equal to any other SM but many times more in numbers. They are finghting many crusades right now, and they range from a few hundred, upto a chapters worth. And thats going on all the time.

Id love to see the Grey Knights win, because they are just friggin hardcore, but numbers prove to be a deciding factor all the time. *cough cough ORKSES cough cough*

Grey Knights number 3000. Their numbers are only limited because they're spread across the entire galaxy. Against other chapters, not only would they be much more powerful individually, they'd outnumber them too.

What qualifier are we using for "greatest"?

Greatest Gene-Seed? Greatest number of troops/Successor Chapters?

Greatest amount of bling on a single model?

I think we're using the metricized cool-scale, in which case the Ultramarines win by about three centicools.

Personaly I favor the Wolves and Grey Knights if you're just looking for who's coolest.

The Space Wolves because they have a life outside of battle, and have characterful personalities compared to normal Marines.

The Grey Knights because, well, they're the fething Grey Knights, anything else I say would be superfluous.

Templar for putting more chainswords per capita in places they don't belong than most other chapters.

Wolves for being, from what I can tell, three dimensional characters, as opposed to the personification of incoherent anger armed with a chainsaw with a handle.

Ultramarines for being pimpin' yo.

Blood Angels for the Rage and how they deal with it.

So, who's the greatest? Angry marines, because I know better than to get the Commissar mad at me.

Edit: Notation, I can't help but think of the Ultramarines in a serious light due to PRIMARCHS by Lastie.

No, the Commissar is always mad, all the time. There is a difference, he's not mad directly at me.

Probly the best chapter is either the Salamanders or on sheer badassery the Space Sharks. Mantis warriors be damned!

O and the Grey Knights actually number somewhere round 10,000 at full force they are just spread through out the galaxy where they are needed.

Right...so a GK in fluff could probably take out 5 SM of any flavor...but once more Templar have ridiculous number that outmatch anything they can handle...but then...GKs could get all of the IG in the universe to fight with them...haha.

But I'm not convinced the Black Templar have THAT much more than the Grey Knights.

It would be equivalent to a GK running into a blob of 30+ Templar...either way...ugh...not happening.

Again, I'm not convinced that the BTs outnumber the GK by that much.

Since everyone is loving on the Grey Knights, I had a question. Do they actually count as a Chapter? Do they ascribe to the Codex, or are they more akin to a Legion, who's membership is little due to the fact that so many die becoming one? Or are they simply an Inquisition tool who look like Space Marines enough to pass as one, roughly to the point where Grey Knights are the Inquisitions attempt to make Marine Inquisitors?

Actually thinking more about the omnibus and most of the GKs are actually on the verge of being Justicars or even Grand Masters....good luck fighting an army of almost Grand Masters.

Chapter...no...legion...no.

They are space marines though...don't know how to describe them except kickyouinthefacegood.

I got too involved in thinking actual gameplay instead of fluff.
