I think that the GKs would have a lot more than just Ultramarine Successors on their back if word got out that they were purging an entire chapter of Loyalist Marines. The Astartes don't take a lot of guff from the Inquisition. The Space Wolves would be all over that in a hot minute!

It's not unheard of for entire chapters to be purged, or if that fails, declared traitor. Basically, if the Inqusition declares a chapter traitor, then them and anyone who supports them is under fair grounds for exterminatus/mind-wiping/execution. As powerful as Space Marines may be, they are no match for the power of the Inquisition. A high enough ranking inquisitor lord could destroy a chapter and their entire geneseed collection with a single word.

I'd have to say the Ultramarines.

Think they may have single handedly destroyed an entire hivefleet with one company.

Other than two Hive Fleets, the Tau Empire being at their doorstep, multiple Tomb Worlds, Eldar raids, and Ork Waaghs?

Yes. Ultramarines are completely untested and unproven in battle...

Not to mention they probably had the most military actions per-heresy second only to the luna wolves.

Just because Ultramarines have the largest fanboy backing, it does not make them automatically the "bestest" chapter IMO. GW overusing ultramarines in their art and fluff is to blame for this.

It is this reason that we have fluff aout Calgar punching out an avatar *shudders*

And just because Ultramarines have the largest amount of haters does not negate the fact that they're constantly engaged in a war of some kind, and more often than not coming out on top while doing it.

There's a reason Ultramarines are "overused in art and fluff". Ultramarines are the single most commonly noticed Chapter. They're involved in pretty much anything you can imagine.

They've got a Company as permanent Honor Guard for the Cadian Sector Command, another Company that is basically doing nothing but pissing off the Tau, etc.

Ah, the fanboy accusation sans irony. I knew it was coming.

Also, the idea of Calgar beating down an Avatar isn't that far fetched. Marneus has 4 Power Fist attacks per turn, hitting on 4s and re-rolling failed wounds and a 4++ save. Look at their stats and abilities, particularly if you throw Null Zone in there. Surely Tigurius would be somewhere nearby? You don't even have to go to Calgar though, Lysander would whipsmack an Avatar's cheeks.

And I've seen Calgar be bitchslapped by a Guardsman's rifle butt before.

Well, the Emperor's Hammer could easily throw enough Guardsmen at Calgar that he eventually is literally up to his neck in corpses and unable to move, until one can finally get around the wildly flailing arms to bitchslap Calgar with said riflebutt.

Ah, but the Space Marines wouldn't fight the entire regiment all at once. They'd Drop Pod in, kill all the commanders and then tear the IG apart bit by bit in the confusion.

You act as if there'd be only one regiment. Or that they'd not have naval support. Or air support. Etc etc etc.

If you're gonna involve drop podding, that means orbital support on the MArine's side... Guard can have that, too, with the Imperial Navy.

Pfft. The Imperial Navy? Please.

Rum, sodomy and the Emprah is all they care about. The Space Marines strategy rating was 3, the IG's was 1. Checkmate!

Thats because there is very little strategy needed when you have some of the biggest guns in the game

Seconded. Here's why:
Dorn:
-Was chosen to design the defences of the Imperial Palace
-Was extremley loyal to the Emperor and a military genius
-Recovered the bodies of the Emperor and Sanguinius during the Heresy and constructed the Golden Throne with notes from the Emperor
-Hard-ass; didn't take **** from Guilliman (until threat of another civil war was presented)

The Imperial Fists:
-Siege masters; held in high esteem by Warmaster Horus for their prowess before the Heresy
-The Emperor selected them as His personal custodians/praetorians
-Based on Terra itself
-Put up a legendary defence of the Imperial Palace against the traitor Marines (Alongside the Blood Angels and White Scars, of course)
-Sigismund was a badass
-Went on crusade against traitors after the Heresy, destroying fortress after fortress
-Spawned Crimson Fists and Black Templars; among the most prestigious 2nd Founding Chapters

I'd probably have to go with the Rainbow Space Shark Warriors.

They live on a deathworld where there is a 99.9% chance of you getting eaten by 100 meter long spiders when you are BORN.

This of course obviously leads to super badass Imperial Marines.

Imperial Fists are by far the best. Dorn was the most kick ass guy in the whole of space (Emperor not-withstanding). And now it comes to Lysnader to hold his hammer high and smash the enemies of the imperium into oblivion!

Plus the point of having the 2 greatest 2nd foundings is brilliant. How long playing the game before you realise that Crimson Fists and Black Templars weren't created at the same time as the rest of them? Freaking ages! Cos they kick as much as the first founding legions when they were split down.
