That probably depends on your point of view I imagine. Lets do WH versus Space Marines
HQ choices WH 2+1 (the +1 is the crappy priest who nerfed shooting back then as well as now), SM 3
Special characters WH 2, SM 6
Elites WH 9, SM 4
Troops 2 for both
FA WH 2, SM 7
Heavy Support 5 (with the god awful bombardment being one of them, one them is also a transport option for like 3 units), SM 6
Having never played 3rd edition I have no idea how to compare the unit quality, but I know many of the elites choices I would never take in this edition. Maybe I'm comparing the wrong codexes since Space Marines are the poster children of GW but its what I have to work with as a comparison. For comparison purposes I expanded all of the multiple choices from one entry into seperate entries like all the Landspeeders and Officio Assassinorum entries.

Do we actually have any REAL news about the release of the free online codices? It seems odd that they put it in the white dwarf about being online for this month but still nothing has been mentioned or seen on the website.

German and French pdf's are out (they existed for years anyway). English not so far. Just watch the two new threads per day asking the same question. Or ... gasp ... just register at GW and look yourself.

I'm registered and have been looking each day. The usability of the GW site is somewhat lacking. Just wondered if I missed anything (I missed the Ard Boyz Semifinal Scenarios being posted).

I like them, but I think you might be right with the SM-leather-somewhat-sexist flavor being, I don't know, a little wrong. I'd greatly appreciate a "real" fighting force incorporating women, with real meaning somewhat serious, believable and not shaped by nerdy fantasies. Well, perphaps female Marines Or women incorporated into the Imperial Guard. I mean, if Cadia is beset on all sides and under constant attack and every finger that can fire a lasgun is needed, why don't they employ women in their army?

Yes, they do fluffwise, but I'd love to actually see them as miniatures. I know, they might not be that distinguishable, but I think GW should cast some

You're not going to see them as miniatures, simply because there'd be no real difference in models. Flak armor and helmets cover the distinguishing features.

As someone who wouldnt blink an eye if witchhunters were squatted I think they should update all other 3rd and 4th edition books before them. Theres gotta be like what, 20 tau players for every sister player. Why dont they get updates? GW cannot update every book say every 3 years, when some are selling lots of models and others arent. I do agree they need to tone it down a little bit with the marine love. But still, sisters have a couple things going for them even in 5th. And they were basically an army shoe horned into the game to get more boobs for horny nerds to have on the table.
1-Very competitive army, the amount of firepower this army can unleash is absurd. Rending flamers, 4 million melta guns in a 1500 point list, etc. Faith points certainly help tarpitting. They are definitely in the top half of armies in the game right now.
2-good looking model range. If you dont like pewter you dont like pewter, and that doesnt matter that they are sisters, just that they are pewter. The same people I know who wont play sisters due to pewter wont play grey knights.

SMs being poster children is completely irrelevant to that fact that this is a tabletop strategy game wherein balance ought to be top priority. SMs should not be better than any other army.

Explain how marines are inherently better than any other army? And this isnt just a strategy game, there is a lot to be said for the hobby aspect of it. A lot of people use an armies appearance as their first priority in picking a new one. And what about the hardcore hobbyist. The guy who shows up a tournament to win best painted. Those kind of people? I agree marines get too much attention, but I do not see the massive problems with balance between marines and other books.

Game balance is irrelevant to the hobby aspect and appearance of a given army.
I could make an exhaustive list of how SMs compare to other armies but I don't care enough. Generally, SMs are not better in any way that can't be overcome with superior tactics. That doesn't necessarily mean they're balanced though. Quite often, people beat SMs only because they tailor their armies specifically to counter SMs.

I would hesitate to say they are very competitive. Fopr an almost completely shootng army they have inadequate long range shooting Everything that is over 24" in range is found in 3 units for Sisters. There are heavy bolters and Exorcist missile launchers everything else is 24" or less and most of that is 12" when moving. All of that aside its not as if they are not competitive at all.
Their model range is great, but right now if I want a single brand new 10 battle sister squad with va eteran superior, a heavy flamer and a meltagun in a Rhino I must pay $123.00 US. I have 2 basic sisters left over from that. That will probably stop someone from buying the army right there. IG can get a Sentinel, a platoon command squad and 2 infantry squads, and a heavy weapons squad with all of the fixings for less than that in a box. I've heard more than a few people say they woudl be intersted in buying an army if it wasn't as expensive as it is and it just went up with the loss of 10 sister box and the price increase of heavy weapons for Sisters.

I was only comparing numbers of units. My comments were only to say that I think Sisters have less (as in number of) effective units in relation to other 3rd ed codexes than other armies and I used 3rd ed Space marines for comparison because thats what I had to work with. I'm not commenting on the power of space marines or anything like that though I frequently am annoyed when faced with the superior long ranged firepower of marines and the low toughness of Sisters. I lost a shooting match to marines. Sisters are good and they are my first and favorite army but almost every army out there wounds them on a 3+ in shooting or clsoe combat. Weight of Saves gets me every game.

I'm not "made" about sisters. I've just always felt they were a bad idea. They are a running joke in many 40k circles about an army entirely composed of women on their "Monthly". Sisters should have never become part of the 40k universe, they are an attempt to cater to a certain crowd and from what I've seen never managed to attain that.

I'm not big on them either, but I still see a place for them at least in the background. True, the tabletop doesn't give the -best- representation of the Sisters when compared to the fluff, but they're still an element that gives balance to the void between Guard mobs and our favorite screaming baldies.
I think all the Sisters really need is some good bulking up of their background. GW didn't spend enough time writing their background for them to feel truly important. The fluff they -do- have paints their history as very defining and pivotal to the existance of the Imperium but, again, there's very little of it. One of the things GW would need to do for folks to look at them more seriously is write more background for them. Whether they do or not isn't any of my concern. I just think that's what they need to do if they want to improve their sales of that army. That and get rid of the whole stupid "Huurrr Letz maek everryfing' outta' metul, lololol!!1!"

You are aware that the Sororitas have more written background than Tyranids, Dark Eldar and Necrons will ever have combined, right? Sororitas have a novel completely dedicated to them.
But what do you think about not derailing this thread any further with off topic talk?

Sisters are base on Joan of Arc on of the few female heroes in history. Out of all the armies they probably have the most Gothic feel to them. I'm sick of your sexist attitude, you see women and you automatically think S&M, besides the Repentia squad all of them are full covered in armour. I'm glad their is a female army that isn't about exposing themselves.

That's what I meant. And I think there should be more of that. Granted, not in the IG because you wouldn't notice visually anyway, but at least revamp the Sisters of Battle. As well as those other races that aren't getting a lot of GW love. I don't know whether the appearance of those codices for free is really a good sign in that context.

The penitent engine has a choice of a guy or a girl, plus the penitent engine looks pretty cool and isn't really revealing.
Seriously compared to any other female army (ever made) this is probably the least sexists army. Go and find me a female army that isn't sexist.
Stop blaming GW for your attitude.

I don't know what could more further away from a sexist army. I mean their full clothed and their a bunch of religious fanatics but no I guess since their all females their automatically sexist, even though the only body part your seeing is the head and in some cases our not even seeing that since they have helmets.
