I can understand this saving money think.. but I don't think you should defile your models . I mean, you spent all that time, building and painting them and making them part of your SM army, only to make them chaos. And this process is likely irreversable. Wait. That makes sense..

Meh. The CSM models are awesome anyway. IMO you should just buy some cheaply off ebay/Wayland games if you can.

When I am shaving of imperial symbols, although obvious, I like to use small file (the GW hobby files are great) and green stuff to smoothen and finish the area when I am done.

In terms of chaos symbols, your best bet would be to use the symbols in the chaos tank sprue, star icon in the CSM box and the fantasy star icons. I've heard of people using hot water to bend an icon to fit a curved surface although I don't know if this would work with the tiny icons. Anyway here are some links to some cheap chaos icon sprues.
