I am thinking about swapping allegiance. (C:SM to C:CSM)
Pros and cons of this and advice or opinions?
Modelling sidde will be easy (and fun!)
Oh and its fluffy as my DIY chapter's background has the 2nd and 5th companies turning traitor so ^.^
Just not sure if this is a good decision yet...

Any particular theme or god in mind?
If your planning on doing a freshly turned force I always liked the Idea presented in the 3rd Edition codex for the Red Corsairs.
Basically the same scheme as the force they come from but with all the iconography defiled with red chaotic symbols.

No real theme. Or god.
My colour scheme will stay mostly the same. The plastics attract me also.
I will have a squad of each of the cult/marked troops except nurgle.
I hate nurgle.

Moving on...
You could always field them as counts as Berzerkers... intent on Brutally slaughtering their loyal bretheren with their own hands...
Maybe throw out a list of what you have in mind and see if a mod would move this to Army Lists instead? Might have more luck there.

Well not yet. I don't have the codex.
But if you read my first post I made this thread to see the pros/cons of switching.
One con is that it makes my 20+ scouts obselete.
Oh and @any Mods: If you think this is in the wrong section or could be better placed in another then please move it.
Is there any romours of a new chaos codex? If there was one soon ish i would hold off switching till then.

I think it is quite a while away yet, 2012/13 maybe?
The current codex was published 2007, and the one before that was in 2002. So a five year cycle would fit in with the date above... kinda...
Personally speaking you may find the current codex a tad bland. (Quite a few others do too, including me)
You could always just use the current SM codex and just chaos-ify some regular marines. It would probably be better for representing a force freshly turned anyway.

Maybe.
Main Problem is that I need my marines to keep my Inq stuff easilty useable. So I might add 25% of my current marines again purely of Choas so i have heavy choas and lesser chaotic marines.
The more I think about this the harder it becomes. Automatically Appended Next Post: I like the idea of Chaos rather than Loyalist.
Unless I only did half my army my Inq stuff wouldn't have much to ally with.
It would be a small Chaos warband unless I spand more money on marines.

You could always just remake chaotic versions of your sergeants/commanders, picking up one chaos marine box and a few bits and pieces from bits sites.
The sergeants turning into the aspiring champs.
The commander turning into a lord.
These characters would fully absorb themselves in chaos before their brothers, so it is likely they would be the first to do so.
It also means you only need to make up about a box worth of marines.

That was something I thought about.
Problem is it doesn't look to chaotic from accross the board.
So maybe one ten man box and one five man box ^.^ Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and cult troops (1K sons, Bezerkers, Noise Marines)

Sounds like a plan, although if you are buying Dedicated troops I would do that first. There will probably be various spare bits and pieces in there and you might end up not needing that other box of marines.

There's not really any pro to going chaos.
Unless you love obliterators, daemon princes and defilers.
I also hate nurgle. Which is sad because they always get some nifty rules.
Stick with you current codex and spiky up.

I love Nurgle, so I can't back you there. And really, around here, people tend to pick the same armies that their friends play, so the players of specific armies tend to be similar in appearance/behavior. Tragically, most of the C:SM players I know are drooling mouthbreathers. (Since they all got into the game through one guy, who is the King of the Droolingmouthbreatheropia.) But, if you were willing to alter your current Space Marines to be Chaos Marines (defiling their armor, tiny chaos icons on their purity seals, scarred and melted aquilas on the armor, etc) then I think it would look not only awesome, but...but...some word that means awesome squared!
Plus, if any of your friends are used to you playing marines, you can show up one day with your new Codex and your freshly desecrated marines, and give them a shock.

I think it would also improve my modeling skills.
Maybe I'll buy a combat squad box and give it a go at defiling them first.

Well they have 20 CSM units for one. And they all have LD10. You have access to some pretty tough units (Berzerkers can just maul things like no bodies business) Obliterators are also a pretty nice perk, you dont even HAVE to use the lash trick for them to kick the poop out of things. No really buy the Chaos marines box. It comes with so much awesome shtuff in it you just cant go wrong.

Funny enough, If I had spare time, I would like to work on a second army as I've had this great idea for a while now to do a traitor company SM army.
My suggestion to you would be to pick a good colour scheme (maybe something that uses metallics as renegade marines tend to use a lot of mettalics and black). I would also suggest shaving off imperial signs and decorating with chaos signs etc. Depending on how chaotic/archaic/imperial your models are, you can choose which MEQ codex you would like to use. If they have only recently turned traitor, your company might still fight like proper SMs whereas if they are turned traitor for a while, they might have degenerated to the same level as the other chaos warbands. I can also see a lot of Khornate modelling potential in a BA/SW traitor company.
Also if you like the look of any of the chaos miniatures but are worried they may not match your army, feel free to use them as they can easily be justified from a fluff/gameplay perspective as allies part of your warband, regardless of which book you use (example: Thousand sons can be used to represent legion of the damned in the Vanilla book, Khorne Bezerkers can be used to represent DC in the BA book etc).
Anyway, I would suggest to try and get a good look/feel/theme for your traitor company first and you can start picking out models/MEQ books later. Maybe read up on some of the Renegade Marine chapters in one of the warhammer wiki sites

Turning to Chaos is just fine, and has nothing to do with worshipping the dark gods; and more to do with the fact that the Emperor is inept, and fighting for him is a lost cause. HE caused the Horus Heresy. HE was warned about it. HE punished the messenger. HE stamped out religion and put down knowledge of chaos that would have kept mankind from splitting in half.
History even on Earth across all countries is riddles with lessons of people rising up against regimes, dictators, royalty, unfair governance....the 41st millennium is no different. OP: I applaud your decision. Serving an inept leader now worshipped in a religion anathema to everything he worked for, which he's now a figurehead for of a corrupt and inefficient government that rapes and plunders every world it brings under its sway.....that can't sit well on men and women of conscience.
Turn away from evil. Even should you decide to worship the primordial creators and let mutation take root in your chapter, any dark rituals you commit pale next to the soul sacrifices that the heathen priests of the false god's kill by the millions on a daily basis to keep his essence on the golden throne. Even if you plunder and rape a world in passing, it pales in comparison to the devastation, permanent enslavery of a planet's population, and rape of natural resources that the Imperials pillage from every world they take under their protective wing.
The happiest world under imperial rule is still a smog-ridden industrialized and grimy hell filled with hive cities where the entire planetary population slave until they die of misery.
Good for you.

Traitor. You have turned from the Emperors Light. A heretic may be forgiven in the fires of absolution, but a traitor...we know that there is nothing so wretched or craven as one who turns on his brothers in arms. Repent your wicked leanings! Repent before the Inquisition !
That said, you are dropping the Codex SM, so I can't blame you.

To the OP, It really depends on your playstyle. CSM seem to have so much more in terms of fluff and interesting play style (very subjective) so I would say go for it.

Welcome to the dark side, comrade!
See the sights, hear the sounds!
Over there are our Khornates. Don't piss them off. Or be nice to them. Or be seen by them. Just kill things when they start killing things and maybe don't be killed by them.
Here's our Tzeentch crowd. They don't say much.
The Nurglings are friendly, so long as your power armour's air filtration system works.
And the Slaaneeshys. Speak loud if you want them to hear you.
All in all, enjoy!

@EF I'm a Traitor ay? What about my load Of points sunk into Inq? (I had to check my own sig to find out how many! It's 2250pts)
The one problem I foresee is my colour scheme. Its a bit bright (And yes it's metallic.) But I don't want to lose the scheme completly.
So any advice on the defiling of my current models?
