Okay guys, anyone wanting to do background, send me a PM and I'll toss you a subject. Try to make a short story's worth apiece, written from one of three perspectives:
A) A story in a newspaper, complete with heading, company (ie. Associated Press, CanWest, Etc...)
B) An on-site reporter doing a story on the given subject
C) A recorded dialogue between higher-up members of whichever faction you're writing about
Most stories at this point won't be taking place in battles. There might be a few battlefield reports based in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, but for the most part we're going to build the story in chronological order. And we'll be starting with the political, social, and economic aspects of the world as it goes down the crapper.

Hey metallifan, this sounds interesting and as i'm out of work right now i wouldn't mind helping out.
Also I'm a US marine combat vet, seen action in a few major engagements in Iraq. I was a combat photographer and wouldn't mind submitting some of my shots for use for this game, or i could do up some photoshopped stuff using said shots.
I also wouldn't mind taking a fair shot at writing for the game as well.

Wikipedia is also user-generated, and that, unfortunately, also means morons are allowed to fill in entries without doing their research.
It's the main reason I avoid it unless I'm looking for info on something fictional. That way if it's wrong, it won't matter anyway

I think wikipedia is an excellent source of information, and also a great way for laypeople to learn to check their sources. Since most factual information in books is written by people who studied second- or third-hand accounts, wikipedia's pretty much on the same level - so long as you're the kind of person who doesn't trust something outright just because someone else wrote it down.

-Mercenary's limits some of the equiptment/support abilitys but has special characteristics and rules
-Government/nation military basic units/rules/wargear
-special forces (SAS, Rangers, Seals, Spentsnaz, Commandos, Delta force etc) can get bonuses but cost more points

@Physcosamatic - I note the inclusion of tactical air support in your list. Heh... I remember a friend telling me about an old cold war type skirmish game. You could apparently call in an A-10 strike, at which point you were supposed to take a brush and sweep a clear line across the battlefield

As a possible game mechanic that would streamline air support, perhaps it would be best to have it limited by tactical doctrine? Instead of having proper stats for various airborne vehicles, simply have them 'off board' permanently, but require the squads in-game to fulfil certain criteria to use their effects.
For example, to get a chopper to pick you up, you must find or clear an area of the battlefield so no enemy units have LoS to it, then get all your models there, and summon the chopper by a reserve roll to get away. To use an airstrike, you must get a communication system with operator into LoS of the target, with none of your units danger-close, then pass a skill check for the operator. Perhaps anti-aircraft systems would simply require a skill check and clear LoS to all horizons to interdict an incoming air mission, forcing it to abort, etc.

That's represented by NATO as far as Canada and Western Europe go. "Oceanic Nations" comprise NZ, AUS, and TAZ , The factions only regulate available equipment. You can still play any nation you wish.

Some good news guys - Got my order from Squadron in yesterday. Assembled two riflemen already. I'll take some pictures when I get home. They're REALLY nice sculpts. The Tac Vests on these guys come bare, and there're seperate pouch sprues so you can customize them any way you want. Weapon sprues come with some really cool mods too - Tac-Grips, ACOG Scopes, IR Markers, and M203 GL's to name some off the top of me' noggin.
